Midseason Stopper of the Year Update Announced

April 25, 2019

Two Big 12 baseball student-athletes were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2019 Stopper of the Year midseason update.

Kansas hurler Jonah Ulane and Oklahoma’s right-handed pitcher Jason Ruffcorn earned midseason recognition. The Stopper of the Year award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball.

Through 29 innings pitched, Ruffcorn has registered 22 strikeouts and has allowed only seven runs. He currently holds a 1.86 ERA, one of 20 pitchers in the league with a sub-2.00 ERA.

Ulane has captured eight saves through 20.1 innings pitched in 15 game appearances. With 31 strikeouts, the relief pitcher has averaged a little over two K’s per appearance and only four extra base opportunities.

Since the awards inception in 2005, a student-athlete from a Big 12 institution has been the awards recipient on four occasions (2005, ’06, 2010, ’11), three of which hailed from Texas and one from Kansas.

Finalists for the Stopper of the Year Award are set to be released on Wednesday, June 5, with the winner slated to chosen on Saturday, June 15.
