For a third consecutive week, West Virginia right-hander Alek Manoah was selected as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. Oklahoma State’s Trevor Boone was named Player of the Week and K-State freshman Griffin Hassall earned Newcomer of the Week.
Manoah fanned 15 batters in a complete-game shutout in West Virginia’s 1-0 win over Kansas. The junior did not allow a walk and surrendered just three hits in West Virginia’s series-opening win on Saturday in recording his second consecutive shutout. He is the first pitcher in Conference history to win the award three straight weeks.
Boone hit .462 (6-for-13) on the week with four home runs, eight RBIs, six runs, four walks and a pair of stolen bases. In the series opener against Texas, the junior center fielder put his name in the OSU record books as he became the first player in Cowboy baseball history to hit three homers in a game three times in a career. The weekly award is the second overall for Boone and the first this season.
Hassall, a first-time honoree, allowed just one run on three hits and registered five strikeouts in career-long 7.2 innings pitched in K-State’s 7-4 series-opening win over No. 21 TCU. The freshman has earned back-to-back series-opening wins over top-25 teams.
