The No. 5-ranked University of Denver women’s gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA National Team Final for the first time in program history while the top-seeded Sooners make their seventh straight and ninth overall appearance after finishing in first place in the NCAA Semifinal II.
DU finished second during Friday’s NCAA Semifinal II with a 197.0375, shattering the team’s previous record score at NCAA Nationals (196.475 in 2017). All four of Denver’s event scores were also program bests at the national championships.
Sophomore Lynnzee Brown captured a share of the national title on floor with a 9.950, becoming Denver’s second NCAA national champion (Nina McGee on floor in 2016).
OU posted a 197.850 to take the top spot in the second session of the NCAA Championships on Friday evening.
Junior Maggie Nichols defended her all-around crown, taking home the title with a 39.7125. Nichols added a vault title to her collection and has now earned an individual title on three of four events (bars – 2017, 2018; floor – 2018) and the all-around. She is the OU record holder for most individual career titles with six, breaking a tie with Sooner legend Kelly Garrison. Senior Brenna Dowell earned a share of the floor title with a 9.95 for her second career individual championship.
Joining Denver and Oklahoma in Saturday’s championship meet will be No. 2 UCLA and No 3 LSU. Saturday’s NCAA Team Final is set for 6:00 p.m. CT and will be televised live on ESPNU.
