Quartet Earn Weekly Tennis Honors

April 09, 2019

In back-to-back weeks, multiple student-athletes were named Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week.

Baylor’s Johannes Schretter and Texas’ Christian Sigsgaard shared the men’s weekly honors, while Texas Tech’s Felicity Maltby and UT’s Anna Turati garnered Women’s Co-Tennis Player of the Week recognition.

For the third consecutive week, a Texas student-athlete from the men’s and women’s teams have been recognized as weekly award recipients (Bianca Turati and Christian Sigsgaard, April 2; Bianca Turati and Yuya Ito, March 26).

Sigsgaard downed the No. 4 player in the nation, Alex Rybakov, at first singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, leading Texas to a 6-1 road win at No. 10 TCU. Sigsgaard has now faced 16 ranked opponents in dual match play this season and is 10-4 with two unfinished. He is also 3-0 in Big 12 play, all against top-100 foes. The Longhorn has now earned his second-consecutive weekly honors, third for the season and fifth all-time.

Schretter capped off his week with a perfect 4-0 record in singles and doubles action with two ranked wins over No. 17 Oklahoma and No. 34 Oklahoma State over the weekend. The senior recorded his highest ranked win on the season and the second-highest of his career over No. 33 Spencer Papa (OU). For Schretter, this award marks the first on the season and second of his career.

On the women’s side, Turati led the Longhorns to a 2-0 dual-match record last week as she posted a perfect 4-0 mark in singles and doubles play. The junior dropped only five total games in a pair of straight-set victories and took down the No. 42 doubles tandem in the nation alongside twin sister and doubles partner Bianca Turati. The two Longhorns played at the top doubles line for the first time in their collegiate careers this weekend, registering a perfect 2-0 record. For the junior, this is her second all-time honors.

Maltby captured her highest ranked singles victory of her career with a tie-break thrilling upset over No. 17 Bianca Turati (Texas). The senior Lady Raider improved to a 6-1 record in singles play on the season with her two wins last week. This award mark’s the second all-time for Maltby.
