TCU junior infielder Jake Guenther was honored as the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week for Week 8, while West Virginia right-hander Alek Manoah garnered Pitcher of the Week accolades. Texas Tech rookie Dru Baker was selected as the Newcomer of the Week. A five-person media panel selects the weekly award winners.
Guenther extended his reached-base streak to 30 games and recorded three straight multi-hit games against No. 23 Oklahoma. In game two of the series, he scored the game-tying run in the sixth inning against the Sooners and delivered the game-winning hit for the Horned Frogs in the seventh with a bases-loaded single.
The right-handed pitcher Manoah put together eight shutout innings and fanned 11 in West Virginia’s 11-1 win over Oklahoma State. The junior from Miami, Florida, allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter in the contest.
Baker, a freshman for the Red Raiders, led the Big 12 with 12 hits and a .522 batting average for the week. Baker racked up seven hits, three runs and three RBIs in the series win over Kansas. Defensively, the infielder was part of a conference-leading six double plays during the week.
All of this week’s honorees are first-time award winners.
