Baylor Crowned EQ Champs; Individual Awards Announced

The Baylor Bears were crowned the 2019 Big 12 Equestrian Champions after an undefeated showing this weekend. This marks the first Big 12 title for Baylor since 2017 and the fourth all-time.

Day two saw Oklahoma State cap off the second half of its draw against TCU with a 13-7 score line. The Bears and the Cowgirls faced each other in the final round of the 2019 Big 12 Equestrian Championship as BU captured the title with a raw score of 2855-2635 to break the 10-10 tie in draw.

Along with earning team championship gold, Baylor’s Abbi Demel garnered Most Outstanding Performer of the Big 12 Championship awards in the Horsemanship discipline. OSU’s Abigail Brayman was honored as the MOP in both Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat, while Hannah Lovrien was recognized as the Reining MOP.

Capping off the 2019 Big 12 Equestrian Championship, both All-Big 12 and individual awards were announced. Baylor led the way with seven All-Big 12 honorees, while TCU and Oklahoma State had six and five, respectively. Madison Day was recognized twice on the ledger, in Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat.

Individual ‘Of the Year’ award winners were selected as well, as Day (Oklahoma State) was named the Equitation over Fences Rider of the Year, Grace Thiel (Baylor) the Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Year, Harley Huff (Oklahoma State) the Horsemanship Rider of the Year and Sydney Scheckel (Baylor) the Reining Rider of the Year.

For second consecutive year, Huff received Horsemanship of the Year honors, the first honoree to earn back-to-back honors in any discipline since 2016.

Cowgirls head coach Larry Sanchez was honored for the third straight year as the Big 12 Equestrian Coach of the Year. This marks his fourth all-time award as the front-runner for OSU.
