Big 12 Gymnastics Programs Headed to Regionals

March 25, 2019

All four of the Big 12’s gymnastics programs have qualified for NCAA regionals.

Oklahoma checks in as the nation’s No. 1 team heading into regionals for the fifth consecutive season. The Sooners were tabbed as the top seed in the NCAA Athens Regional, where they will face No. 8 Georgia, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 16 California, Iowa State, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire and North Carolina on April 4-6.

No. 5 Denver will compete at the Corvallis Regional. The Pioneers will be the region’s No. 2 seed and the highest-ranked No. 2 seed in the nation. This is just the third time in program history that DU has held at No. 2.

Iowa State has also earned a spot in the Athens Regional and will compete on Friday, April 5 in Session I. The Cyclones have qualified as the No. 22 team in the country, which is their highest ranking heading into Regionals since 2011. No. 27 West Virginia will head to the Ann Arbor Regional.  This is the team’s fifth consecutive qualification.

The journey to the NCAA Championships will have a new format in 2019, starting with four eight-team regionals in place of six six-team regionals. Taking place over three days, nine teams will travel to regional sites, with seven automatically advancing to day two. Two teams at each site will compete in a play-in on the first day.

On the second day, eight teams will compete in two sessions of four, and the top two in each of those sessions will advance to the next day. On the final day, four teams will compete in one session, and the top two teams will advance to the finals site.

The national championships will take place April 19-20 in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena. The top-two teams from the Ann Arbor and Baton Rouge Regionals will compete in the first semifinal, and the top-two teams from the Athens and Corvallis Regionals will compete in the second semifinal.
