Oleksandra Korashvili (Oklahoma) and Marina Guinart (Oklahoma State) were named Big 12 Women’s Co-Tennis Players of the Week while Matias Soto (Baylor) and Yuya Ito (Texas) garnered Big 12 men’s honors.
Korashvili garnered her third straight tennis weekly award after handing Kansas’ No. 34 Anastasia Rychagova her first loss of the season with a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-2. The Odessa, Ukraine, native snapped Rychagova’s 10-match singles win streak on her way to earning her seventh straight win. On the season, the junior now has five wins over ranked opponents.
Guinart led OSU to back-to-back wins in the opening weekend of Big 12 play. She went a perfect 4-0 on the week, winning in straight sets all-around. The senior and her doubles partner Katarina Stresnakova knocked off No. 40 Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina of Kansas.
Soto recorded a perfect 4-0 record in singles and doubles action last week. The sophomore earned the highest ranked win of his career with a straight-set upset of No. 6 Daniel Cukierman of USC. He led Baylor to a first place finish at the 2019 BNP Paribus Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge in Indian Wells, Calif.
The 2018 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Performer, Ito, defeated No. 28 Kyle Seelig in straight sets last week (6-0, 6-3), including seven straight games to open the match. The junior competed with doubles partner Chih Chi Huang, handing No. 1 Ohio State its first lost doubles point this season.
This week’s awards mark the fourth on the season for Korashvili, third all-time for Ito, second for Guinart and first for Soto.
