The 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships were held in Birmingham, Alabama, this weekend as three student-athletes captured individual national champion trophies.
Texas Tech’s Zarriea Willis (High Jump) and Divine Oduduru (200m Dash) won gold in their respective events, while Kansas’ Bryce Hoppel earned a first place finish in the 800-meter run.
Oduduru retained the gold after a 20.49 time in the men’s 200-meter run. With the juniors’ back-to-back individual national titles in the 200-meter dash, he and Leo Bookman (Kansas, 2003 & 2004) are the only two-time champions and consecutive crown holders in the 200-meter dash in Conference history.
Willis is the fourth NCAA High Jump Individual Champion to hail from the Big 12 as she recorded a jump of 6′-1.5″ (1.87m), becoming the only women’s individual high jump champion in TTU’s history.
The junior Jayhawk runner ran a 1:46.46 in the 800-meter run to top a KU school record that he set. His victory led the Kansas men’s team to a 12th place finish in the team standings. This marked the highest finish for the Jayhawks since 2002.
As a conference, the Big 12 placed within the top five in 14 events, five for the women and nine for the men, which included three individual champions and three runner-ups.
This weekend’s events marks the conclusion of the 2019 Indoor Track & Field season as the team’s look to prepare for the 2019 Outdoor Track & Field season which is set to begin next week.
