Day one of the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship in Lubbock, Texas, concluded with numerous records set. Eleven total champions were crowned today, six for the women and five for the men.
After conclusion of the first day of action at Texas Tech’s Sports Performance Center, Kansas leads the way on the men’s side with 41 points, while the Wildcats of K-State lead the women with 46 points.
For the women, Ashtin Zamzow (Texas) won the Women’s Pentathlon with a final point total of 4,183, breaking the previous Longhorns school record that she set a season ago in Ames (4,076). Sharon Lokedi (16:11.50) defended her indoor 5,000m run title to become the first three-time champion since Betsy Saina (Iowa State) completed it with wins in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Lokedi has won three of the last four 5,000m runs, all indoor, and is tied for the most wins in the event in Big 12 history (3). In the 600-yard run prelims, TCU’s Lily Beckford recorded a nation-leading time of 1:19.97.
Andrew Hudson (Texas Tech) ran a 20.33 in the men’s 200-meter dash prelims to break the league’s indoor championship record set by Lee Bookman of Kansas in 2004 (20.58). Edwin Kurgat (Iowa State) won the 5,000-meter race with a 14:10.79 for his first indoor track & field gold medal, fourth gold medal overall (2018 – 5,000m and 10,000m, Outdoor T&F; 2018 – Cross Country Individual Champion). Freshman pole vaulter KC Lightfoot (Baylor) knocked off defending Big 12 Indoor Track & Field pole vaulting champ Hussain Al Hizam (Kansas), catapulting over a height of 18-7.50/5.68m. The 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Long Jump champion, Jacob Fincham-Dukes, captured his first gold in indoor competition with a distance of 26-2.75/7.99m in the men’s long jump.
The final day of action is set to resume tomorrow, Saturday, February 23, with the men’s heptathlon. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT, with field and running events beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT and 2:00 p.m. CT, respectively.
