A live scoring blog for Saturday’s college football game between Florida and Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee:

First quarter

Freshman kicker Evan McPherson hits a 27-yard field goal as time expired to put UF up 3-0.

The Gators had a first-and-goal inside the FSU 10 earlier in the quarter, but came out empty when QB Feleipe Franks was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-2. McPherson’s kick capped a nine-play, 66-yard drive in 3:47 time of possession. A 39-yard pass from Franks to Van Jefferson highlighted the drive.

UF outgained FSU 102-29.

Note: UF receiver Tyrie Cleveland went to the locker room with trainers while holding his right side after landing on his shoulder on a downfield pass. He returned to the sideline with his arm in a sling.

What went right: Wide receiver Van Jefferson made a great, diving catch for 39-yard gain that set up the only score of the quarter, a 27-yard field goal by Evan McPherson. After going three-and-out on UF’s first possession, the Gators had some success moving the ball and the line did a solid job protecting Feleipe Franks. On the other side of the ball, the defense dominated. The Seminoles had only three first downs, two coming on penalties.

What went wrong: The Gators scored only three points after having a first down on the FSU 6-yard line midway through the quarter and on the 18 late in the quarter. After Franks was flushed from the pocket on third-and-goal and threw incomplete on the first possession, Dan Mullen elected to go on fourth-and-goal from the 2. Franks tried to run over the left side but was brought down for no game. The missed opportunity gave the Seminoles some early momentum.

Second quarter

Lamical Perine took off on a 74-yard scoring run to put UF up 10-0 at the 13:24 mark of the quarter.

An illegal shift on FSU called back a 70-yard scoring pass play with running back Cam Akers. FSU punted an incomplete pass later.

Franks and receiver Trevon Grimes teamed up for a 53-yard pass play to the FSU 9-yard line. The drive stalled there and McPherson hit a 23-yard field goal with 7:35 left.

QB Deondre Francios got the Seminoles back in the game with a 15-yard TD pass to Akers, who made a highlight reel one-handed catch in the end zone, to make it 13-7 with 5:25 remaining. The score capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

“Hurry-up offense has been an issue for the Gator defense in second half of the season. FSU went 75 yards in 2:10 and Gators looked confused in the secondary. 13-7 Florida. Red zone issues also killing Gators (Three trips in red zone produce 2 field goals, turnover on downs.).” — Pat Dooley

Florida has outgained FSU 265-124 in the first half.

What went right: In the opening moments of the quarter, running back Lamical Perine burst through a hole on the left side and raced untouched 74 yards to give the Gators a 10-0 lead. Midway through the quarter, Franks, on an RPO, threw a strike over the middle to Trevon Grimes for 54 yards that gave the Gators a first down on the FSU nine and set up a chip-shot field goal by McPherson to build the lead to 13-0.

What went wrong: After the big Grimes catch, the offense stalled again inside the 10-yard line and had to settle for another field goal. The defense, so dominant through the first quarter-and-a-half, struggled with FSU’s up-tempo offense and surrendered a 75-yard touchdown drive to make it a 13-7 game. The key play on the drive was allowing quarterback Deondre Francois to scramble for a first down on a third-and-11.

Third quarter

The Gators go 75 yards in 12 plays with the first drive of half and scored on a 3-yard TD pass from Franks to receiver Josh Hammond, giving UF a 20-7 lead at 10:53.

Announced attendance at Doak: 71,953.

The teams have combined for 15 penalties today, midway through this quarter.

Defensive end Jachai Polite stripped Francois  of the ball on third down and Cece Jefferson recovered at the FSU 22.

On the next play, Franks throws a 22-yard bullet to Grimes in the end zone for a 27-7 lead at 6:20.

Francios helped FSU cut the deficit to 27-14 with 4:16 left in the quarter by escaping trouble on fourth-and-13 with a 32-yard run to the UF 4. He then scored on the next play.

UF has 411 total yards, FSU 208 at the end of three quarters.

What went right: Lots of stuff for the Gators. Maybe the best thing they did was take the second-half kickoff and promptly drive 75 yards for a touchdown. The offense got the game going by gashing the Seminoles in the running game. The drive ended with a 3-yard TD pass from Franks to Josh Hammond. A little later in the quarter, the defense came up big, with Jachai Polite coming up with a sack fumble and Cece Jefferson recovered on the FSU 22. On the next play, Franks scrambled and hit Grimes in the end zone for a 27-7 lead with 6:20 left to go.

What went wrong: Just one bad play, really, letting Francois scramble for a 34-yard gain down to the UF four on a fourth-and-13 play. On the next play, Francois scored on a 4-yard run.

Play of the quarter: The sack/fumble by Polite that set up the quick touchdown.

Trending: The Florida offense responded to the Francois TD with a drive down to the FSU 33 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth quarter

Franks connected with Jefferson for a 38-yard score to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive for a 34-14 lead. Franks had a 14-yard completion to Kadarius Toney on third-and-eight to keep drive alive. Franks is 14-for-22 for 232 yards and 3 touchdowns with a 197.2 QB rating.

Freshman defensive back Trey Dean III intercepted Francios and returned it 44 yards to the FSU 48.

UF moved the ball inside the 10-yard line but came away empty when Franks’ fourth-down pass was knocked down.

Jordan Scarlett scores on a nine-yard run to up the UF lead to 41-14 with 3:56 remaining.

Florida with 534 yards of offense, third straight game of surpassing the 500-yard mark.

Safety Donovan Stiner intercepts Francois to seal it.

Nick Sproles in at QB for the Gators.

UF finishes the regular season at 9-3 and a strong resume for a New Year’s 6 Bowl. FSU ends at 5-7, its 36-year bowl streak and 41-year winning record streak over.

What went right: It couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. On the first play, Franks was flushed out of the pocket, kept his eyes downfield and found Jefferson in the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown to put the Gators up by 20. A little later in the quarter, true freshman cornerback Trey Dean ended a potential FSU scoring threat with an interception and 44-yard return on a fourth-and-nine play from the 26. The Gators put the game completely out of reach with Jordan Scarlett’s 9-yard TD run with 3:56 remaining.

What went wrong: The Gators missed another scoring opportunity deep in the red zone, when UF was stuffed on a fourth-and-two play from the 7-yard line.

Play of the quarter: The touchdown pass from Franks to Jefferson that stretched the lead to 34-14.
