Five Garner Week 10 Big 12 Honors

Five Big 12 football student-athletes from Baylor, Iowa State and West Virginia garnered weekly honors for their Week 10 performances.  

West Virginia’s Will Grier earned his fourth career Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor, while Baylor’s Clay Johnston was selected as Defensive Player of the Week for the first time. Mountaineer kicker Evan Staley picked up his first Special Teams Player of the Week award. Baylor’s Jalen Hurd and Iowa State’s Brock Purdy shared Newcomer of the Week recognition.

Grier completed 28-of-42 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns in West Virginia’s 42-41 win at No. 17 Texas. The redshirt senior threw a 33-yard TD to Gary Jennings Jr. with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and ran in the game-winning two-point conversion to give WVU the victory in Austin.

The junior linebacker Johnston led the Bears with a career-high 17 tackles, including 14 solo stops, in Baylor’s 35-31 win over Oklahoma State. Johnston’s 17 tackles were the most for a Baylor defender since 2013.

Staley tallied 10 points in West Virginia’s 42-41 victory over Texas. He connected on a pair of field goals from 44 and 45 yards, while averaging 60.2 yards per kickoff.

BU’s Hurd caught seven passes for 96 yards and a touchdown reception and carried the ball nine times for 27 yards in the Bears’ triumph over the Cowboys. Hurd finished the game with a season-long 36-yard touchdown reception with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter.
