KANSAS CITY – No. 2-seeded West Virginia captured its fourth Big 12 Soccer Championship postseason title with a 3-0 shutout of regular-season champion Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Swope Soccer Village.
The No. 14 nationally ranked Mountaineers jumped on the board in the first half after an own goal and added two more in the second half to claim its first Big 12 postseason title since 2016. WVU (14-4-3) outshot the No. 9-ranked Bears (16-5), 19-to-7, including 15-to-5 in the second half.
West Virginia struck first at the 36th minute when Sh’Nia Gordon serviced a ball inside the box bouncing off a Baylor defender for an own goal and a 1-0 Mountaineer lead.
The match remained a one-goal advantage until the 76th minute when Amanda Saymon scored from a rebound off a Jordan Brewster shot to put West Virginia up by two. Just eight minutes later, Mountaineer sophomore Lauren Segalla scored off the left post thanks to assists from Gordon and Nadya Gill to put West Virginia up by three.
