Merry Christmas everyone

I appreciate all of you.

Won't be a white Christmas here in the D/FT area of Texas, but back home in NW Iowa they're expecting 6 inches of snow!!!!

We ended up swapping around the kid schedule because I had them last weekend and will have them next weekend. Rather than doing an overnight Christmas swap, they're old enough to understand the concept of Christmas is something that you celebrate with your people, regardless of what the calendar says. So we did Christmas with the kids (and in-laws) last Sunday.

We were supposed to have my wife's traditional friends Christmas Eve celebration tonight. This year marks 25 years that she and her girlfriends have been doing it. But... The flu intervened, so that's pushed until next Saturday. (Which thankfully will be when the kids are back too so that's nice).

So we've got a completely unencumbered Christmas Eve, followed by a completely unencumbered Christmas Day. Just myself, my wife, and the dog.

Tonight we're grilling rack of lamb and having Michael Symon's lemon potatoes with it. Tomorrow we're simmering pho all day for the most traditional of all Christmas meals; Vietnamese beef noodle soup :57:

Merry Christmas all!

Looks delicious!

Prime rib was the traditional menu for my wife's annual Christmas Eve thing for many years, and so we're going to go back to that for this 25th-year iteration. However that is pushed to next Saturday.

Which means next weekend is going to be, uhh, heavy. Saturday will be prime rib. Sunday (NYE) is our tradition--boeuf bourguignon. And then NYD will probably be pork, black eyed peas, and collards...

Heading to my mom’s today where brisket is on the menu.

FACT OF THE DAY:

Santa's list of "naughty" and "nice" children has its roots in Belgium and the Netherlands where their version of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas, kept a similar list. The Norse god Odin kept two ravens that would listen at people's chimneys to find out who was good or bad.

Since my wife and I have been dating, I've spent every Christmas but 1 at my in-laws. They live in the Ann Arbor area, so I've spent a fair bit of time getting acquainted with the area.

The fact that it's Christmas and 50 degrees is very strange.

I was there last Thursday through Tuesday to visit friends and family for the holidays. We did get one cold day with some good snow flurries.

Merry freaking Christmas!

Whirlwind weekend, of the best kind.

Saturday 12/23 we had our annual eggnog party.  That's pretty late in the season, usually it's 2 weeks earlier and so of course a lot of our friends were already out of town.  It was mostly family and that's okay too, it was great having more time to spend with individual folks than we usually have.

Sunday 12/24 we woke up, baked gingerbread cookies and watched It's A Wonderful Life and White Christmas.  Then we went to our annual Christmas Eve movie (Wonka, which we all really enjoyed), then came home and decorated the cookies while watching Rudolph and Frosty, then went to Christmas Eve church service with my folks, then had our annual Christmas Even dinner with my parents which was BBQ pork tenderloin, sausage and cheese grits, twice baked potatoes, yeast rolls, and some other stuff I'm forgetting.  On the drive back home we made a quick tour through a nearby neighborhood that is known for its exceptional Christmas light displays and it did not disappoint.  Finally made it home around 10:30 and went straight to bed.

Monday 12/25 woke up around 7 AM and checked our stockings, unwrapped presents from our tree, then packed up and headed over to my inlaws for breakfast of spiral cut ham, egg casserole, croissant with homemade strawberry butter, and mimosas and bloody marys.  Then we did stockings and the tree at their house, lingered for a couple more drinks, then drove the ~2 miles over to my parents' house for lunch of BBQ turkey, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, green chili creamed elotes, and my dad was feeling nostalgic for the 70s so he made a classic lime and pineapple jello mold.  My kids were wary at first, they've never seen such a thing, but ultimately I think they liked it.  After lunch we did stockings and the tree presents there, hung out for a while drinking mulled wine, then finally headed home, where we all proceeded to fall asleep on the couch watching Miracle on 34th Street and Holiday Inn.

Just woke up, sent the family to bed, but now I'm restless so I'm watching A Christmas Carol and typing to you folks.

Hope you all had a wonderful day and weekend as well.

Yep. The dog has been upset ever since we put the tree up because the chair by the front window that he uses to perform his neighborhood watch duties was removed to make room. So we don't want to make him wait any longer than today to get it back...

Says the man who famously wore an orange afro wig every fall Saturday to cheer on a football team that he had no actual relationship with except the fact that they were "students" at the same school as him.

College football fandom is no less irrational than religion, my brotha... At least much of religion is non-falsifiable, while your college football team can in any year objectively suck.

Lots of people like a change of pace throughout the year as far as decorating goes.  Seasonal decorations certainly aren't limited to celebrations of religious holidays.

Not to carry OAM's water, but he didn't reference religion (for once). That was my addition.

I might argue that seasonal decorations of any sort would fall under his "I don't get it" point as it's putting things up just to take them down.

I personally don't get it. But my wife likes seasonal decorations, so we compromise and we have seasonal decorations.

Yeah, you guys are reading way too much into my post.

Just talking about effort and reward.  I just don't find holiday decor and lights moves my mood meter.  That's all.  It does for most, and that's fine.  Just seems like a lot of effort and money.

Putting on a wig takes about 3 seconds.  No ladders.  No fire hazards.  No effort.

And driving hours to see someone you care about or to vacation seem a helluva lot more rewarding than looking at lights.
But that's just me.

It wasn't a 'bah, humbug' post.  I sincerely just don't get it.  The major holidays are roughly spaced out a month apart, during the months you can't go outside to play.  I guess their motive to distract the masses works.

Shrug.

Or maybe 'they' are the masses.
Either way.

Whereabouts in Ohio are you usually at?

Also, Christmas decorations stay up until at least Epiphany on January 6. I tend to be more lazy on the Christmas cards. So long as they're gone by Ash Wednesday that's fine by me.

The 4th of July sort of had to be on the 4th of July, so that's an exception.  The date is the date.
Unlike Christmas.

Well, this IS the Christmas thread after all.  Religious comments are somewhat... expected

Anyway, I'm not sure why you think the masses are trying to distract the masses with the idea of changing out seasonal decorations.

And if the government is trying to distract the masses with the idea of changing out seasonal decorations, well... that's about the most innocuous thing I think the government has ever been accused of plotting.
