We got a couple going today in the league.
Northwestern and Nebraska play in Ireland while Illinois hosts Wyoming.
OK, so I waited to start this one, thinking @MaximumSam (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1572) might swoop down and get it rolling. I beat him to it anyway.
Weather is not good for boating today, so instead a bunch of errands I've been putting off, and then some cooking and football later.
Split chicken breasts are in the brine. Flank steak is in the marinade. Gonna pick up some Polish sausage whilst at the German butcher later on (no Polish stores close by).

😂😂. I was going to say - 847 doesn’t play around on game day.
-
I'm having chicken wings in the air fryer, but it's just me
-
When was the last time that Northwestern and Illinois were both 1-0?
-
I give up
-
At Siesta Key beach now. Could start raining at any time, but has held off so far. Captain Curt's opens at 11, so I'll be heading there soon.

I give up
Before a single down has even been played?
Last year you at least waited until they beefed the Bert game.
-
beefed that on the first series

Watching football at a bar in the Keys whilst it's raining outside sounds like about the most perfect day in the world.
-
We're taking our boat out to a friend's marina slip and gonna hang with them all day, They've got TVs and and a full bar, and a houseboat-slized slip that'll easily fit our wakeboat and their runabout. We'll grill hot dogs and burgers for the kids, and prime ribeyes and strip for us. Gonna be a pretty good day here, too.

Siesta is not in "the" keys. It's a key off of Sarasota.

A month ago, friends and I hit up what I think is the best place in town. Texas style that got lost out east. I think it was $170 after tip for 4.
Was worthwhile
-
The best I've found here is Fox Bros. The "everything plate" is $35, so four of those get you to $140, tax here is 8.9%, add a few drinks ...

This place is really good IMHO.

looks to be correct, not suited up

I hate hurry-up offenses.
That was great coverage on the TD.

Just want to note, Vandy is a 9.5 road favorite at Hawaii. When was the last time that happened.
How horrible is Hawaii.
-
Well, their new HC was previously the receivers coach at Colorado State.
Oh, and he's their all-time passing legend.
When you hire people based on their name and not their qualifications, that's how you're a 9.5 dog vs Vandy.
-

What is "that" in this case.

I mean, also when you hire a coach who is so abrasive, you lose 20 players, and then you have to rebuild fast being a four-hour flight from the west coast. While your school is a financial mess and you're playing in a HS stadium.
(I think it was a bad hire, but anyone they could've hired, they'd be about this bad)
-
Interesting pass coverage scheme by the Huskers there.
-
Nebraska and Northwestern are known to have about the most polite, well-mannered fans in college sports. I wonder if that has anything to do with getting their field trip across The Pond? It doesn’t, but to think of the impression left in Dublin if it was Tennessee playing South Carolina?

Northwestern being Northwestern and keeping it close, even leading 17-14 at half. Eye test says Nebraska is the better team, but let's see what happens on the field in the 2nd.

Yes- good game so far.

O-line Sucks and no pass rush from the defense
I'm not impressed
the refs blew the call on the fumble(twice), but regardless, I'm not impressed with the team on the field

I am actually impressed with Casey Thompson and the offense. If not for the debatable turnover they would likely be up 10-14 at half.
My guess is they pull away in the 2nd half.
-
They pulled away in the second half
-
You're Scott Frost.
You have a lead in the 2nd half.
You've had issues keeping leads in the 2nd half.
And you call for an onside kick...........(https://i.imgur.com/TLusQt9.jpg)
-
That onsides kick was an absolutely boneheaded decision.
-
Win or lose, Nebraska taxpayers may be off the hook for Frosts return flight
-
I think I read his due if fired drops a lot after a few games.

Or…..with the lead, and all of the momentum, Frost will give it all away…
-
On the bright side, the onsides kick was a lot less bone headed of a special teams gaff to blow the game on than the one in the Illinois game last year.
Progress man, baby steps.
-
How is Bennetti-Huard not the FOX A Team?
-
The amended deal signed in 2021 reduces the buyout from $15 million to approximately $7.5 million if Frost is fired after Oct. 1, 2022.
“Approximately” because it’s a prorated amount of $2.5 million for each remaining year through Dec. 31, 2024, and $1.25 million for each remaining year from Jan. 1, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2026.
-
Frost looks like he's already given up on this game.
-
Frost looks like he's already given up on this game.
Or maybe he’s got Northwestern right where he wants them and he’s going to flip the script on last year and just win a bunch of those games 🥴
-
Man, it feels like we have seen this show about 20 times in the last 4 years. (20 one possessions losses by Nebraska in the last 4 years, most in NCAA.)
-
How is Bennetti-Huard not the FOX A Team?
Gus Johnson.
-
NW has 535 yards according to ESpin. Ouch. NW givem 91% chance of winning. A good punt here ...
They dropped the broadcast here for some reason and are showing some preseason Falcons game.
-
Kinda disappointed in NWestern from a "play to win the game" perspective. Among their last couple of drives with a 3rd and 7 and then a 3rd an 8, running up the middle both times.

HOT POTATO!

Don't doubt the Cats.

Ghosts of Martinez strike again... (by throwing a game ending interception.)

Zounds. Just what.

Why? Nebraska has proven for the last four years they can't make a come back. Hearing rumors Frost is buying a home in Dublin... Cause he ain't coming home.

Frost will not be the coach of the Huskers when the Gophers come to town in November.
-
Fighting Berts looking decent at the present. I have no idea if Wyoming is any good.
-
Northwestern is tNU, I reckon.
-
Blast from the past Rich Rodriguez has Jacksonville State up 42-17 over 10th ranked (FCS) SFA, closing in on the end of the 3rd Quarter
-
A. If Frost was gonna survive, that was one you needed. That might be overstating it, but it's probably not.
B. Michigan announces different QBs to start Games 1 and 2. This feels kinda insane, but also maybe fine.
-

I kinda love that spot for him.
Rich Rod was the kind of guy who could do well at places where you need to overachieve a bit. Giving him an FCS power could be very fun.
-

Yeah, I have a hard time seeing this ending well for him.

I like it. He has 2 good QBs, and 3 glorified scrimmages to start the season. Why not?
And, is this the season you finally come out- and admit you are a big UM fan?
-

They are not.
-
They aren't great, but they're not like New Mexico State-bad or anything.
Definitely the top team in their state.
-
UNC must be rusty to only be up 21-14 on FAMU. The Rattlers are down 20-25 players, due to ineligibility issues. Apparently, it's not just a bad grades thing, it's also the school screwing up on student enrollment/schedules and/or transfer issues, plus a few injuries.
Anyhow, UNC should be up 42-0 at half, but it's a 1-score game.

Yes- I have that game on. FAMU moving the ball nicely.
That freshman QB for NC ( Maye) looks like he might be pretty good down the road.
-
Since Michigan has two QBs, they have no QB.
-
Fighting Berts looking decent at the present. I have no idea if Wyoming is any good.
I think they're perfectly fine mid-major, which means not enough strength/talent to counter a non-basement P5 (Bert's Illinois is non-basement, though I'm not sure if it's above that).
-

It's different. Maybe totally a game-changer. The cynic in me makes me think it's a sort of soft soft change without just benching the vet off the bat.
And ... what? What have I done to make you think this? Because I'm neither a big UM fan, nor a little one. Like, honestly, they're not even in the top half of Big Ten teams that I'd be prone to taking a liking to. (honestly, when someone says "you like Michigan," my first thought is about having some goof Zingerman's and even then, had I not been able to expense it, I might not have as warm of feelings to the meal)
-
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 😂
-
Illinois won 38-6.
Who is available for UNL to hire, and why would that person be interested in the job?
Very little in-state talent, and huge expectations from the fan base.
Tough gig - for anyone.

I’m saying they should run the option. It would be interesting if I was drunk. But no. Maybe sleepy.
-
I'm not sure what options are out there, but they are doing some digging and will find out
maybe steal Bert from Illinois? He knows about the O-line and D-line
-
I think Bert's happy where he is. He's building a program there.
-

They don't have the ponies to run the option. Can't afford to get Thompson killed either.
I still think yer drunk. :)
-
I think they wait until after Oct.1 to make a move, and by then maybe they look better, and NW looks better.
Of course, as implied above, NW can beat Ohio State in then lose to N. Ill.

I think Bert's happy where he is. He's building a program there.
I think yer right, but ya never know what is running around in his head
there's obviously more $$$ and support in Lincoln and perhaps better recruiting

Scott Frost under fire following Nebraska 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Dublin, onside kick decision ripped (247sports.com) (https://247sports.com/college/georgia/LongFormArticle/Scott-Frost-under-fire-following-Nebraska-31-28-loss-to-Northwestern-in-Dublin-onside-kick-decision-ripped-192161450/?fbclid=IwAR1HlFrbIh-BLBQvxa0befWLsDDzhGET8JdljkKOnP1Arg659bIKISsGpZI)
Up 28-17 in the third quarter fresh off a touchdown, Nebraska was cruising along at that point. But then Scott Frost decided to have the Huskers go for an onside kick. With that questionable decision, Northwestern recovered, received a short field and promptly went down the field and scored, making it 28-24 and ultimately forced the Huskers to punt on the ensuing drive.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 😂
Debateable.
It's honestly more that I'm a person who sprouts affinity for all sorts of random teams/players/schemes/coaches, and really very few have been from Michigan. I absolutely hated them in college (and had a soft spot for OSU), but that mellowed as they got less good and it grew clear that if OSU was humming, they'd be fighting hard for 10-2.
I'm sure I've liked some defenders or schemes, or said something nice about them from time to time, but honestly they don't have that much spark for me. I've also seen at least 3.5 rise-and-fall narratives with them, which is always odd to watch.

perhaps this person was not watching the game at this point
-
I wasn't watching, our feed got bounced. I'd say up 28-17 is not too far from "cruising along" even though NW showed considerable offensive potential.
-
not sure any head coach is comfortable up 11 with that much time left
I know I wasn't and most Husker fans have seen bigger leads squandered in the past 4 or 5 seasons
if the person was watchng, they would have noticed that the Husker O-line was getting little push in the run game and not protecting the QB in the pass game
they also would have noticed the defense was giving up big plays and plenty of yardage
not most folk's definition of cruising
heck, any call is a bad call if it doesn't work
there's a pretty good chance, looking at the defensive performance, that if they would have kicked the ball deep, the Wildcats would have still scored but just put another 50 yards on the board
-
Sure, 28-17 is not a safe lead, but it's a decent lead. I personally would never think of an on side in that situation. I gather he didn't trust his defense to get a stop.
As you say, if NW starts at their 25 maybe it takes an extra 4-5 plays to get to midfield.
-
watching Big football in 60.............
cruising the the start of the 3rd quarter because of a scramble broken play big play pass for about 60 yards to set up a TD
then a fumble by Northwestern to give the Huskers the ball
then a 46 yard run for a TD to give them a quick 14 points that erased being behind at the half
so, 3 big plays that were very uncommon and they're cruising
nothing sustained either side of the ball
-
same old Scott Frost team
O-line Sucks and no pass rush from the defense
I'm not impressed
Unfortunately the Huskers looked like the same team they've been the previous four seasons under Scott Frost. He's had four years to patch up an OL that got pushed around yesterday. He's had four years to tighten up a defense that yesterday gave up big plays, was pushed around on the DL, and was consistently out of position at linebacker. I see an interim coach leading out the team for the November 5th game at home Vs Minnesota.
-
So, North Dakota and Georgia Southern, should be wins, ha. Oklahoma, almost not possible. Indiana on 10/1 at home, a loss there and ....
An unimpressive win there might trip it also. Rutgers/Purdue/Ill, should be three wins, any mediocre+ team now should be 6-2. Then probably four losses in a row.
Yeah, I think after 10/1 ....
-
yup, it would take a miracle

Yeah, I think after 10/1 ....
I tried to map out their numbers using the current projection systems.
unless something drastic happens, they look to be notable favorites five games, and probably slight underdogs in three more. Granted, those systems aren’t really built to account for the funk that program is in.
-
They'll go like 2-2 against Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue and Illinois.
-

I was going to say... Rutgers, Purdue and Illinois are better than UNL right now.
-
Watched a bit of the first half of the Illinois game. Looks like Illinois has a good OL and RB in Brown.
-
At times, our judgment of a team after a single game is inaccurate.
-
Didn't see but not sure what happened lots of folks complaining about an on side kick i want to say. Frost has certainly lost that once lofty luster, seems likeable but he might have to damn near run the table to save his headset
