Mornin' Sam
Morning buddy, the air is brisk in Ohio right now. I have the sun room door open and got under a blanket
-
Hey Sam I hope you get your Irish ass kicked. "ON WISCONSIN" ;D
-
Dropped cable got an OTA antenna - slim pickens. But,hey I have the radio which I always listened to anyway.

Gonna have big daddy Paul Keels on tonight? Probably better than whoever is doing it for the BTN
-
You ever watch a game and listen to Paul? About 10% of the time he's calling a game you're not watching.Wrong on ball placement, which down it is,player I.D;etc.He gets away with it because of that iconic voice, seniority and Lachey/Mosic kindly tideying things up for him - still enjoyable though

Heh wouldn't surprise me. The way he talks no one could say he's wrong. Plus Lachey will start yelling at something and distract everyone anyway
-
Morning friends.
Had planned for a more quiet, less costly evening. But a friend wanted to get a beer. I was hoping to sneak in a little exercise, but as soon as I got home I was basically on the path passing out. Might try to get in a little work out this morning before the game start.

Every heart has so many beats - don't push it

The thread title reminds me of Necessary Roughness for some reason.

Welcome to football.
Welcome to foot, ball.

No problem with the morning part of the thread being devoted to Kathy Ireland

I always mute the TV and stream the Paul Keels feed.
I've gotten to the point where I can almost always sync it up on the first try.
You wait for the opening kick off, and then pause it right when the returner is getting tackled. Then you unpause it the instant Keels catches up.

There's always some time delay. Before dropping cable and I had the game on talking to a buddy about it and he was one county over with the same company.Yet his reception was like 5 seconds faster than mine - he'd be telling me what just happened before i saw it - watching the same game :017:
-
Yeah, I just told you how to get rid of the time delay.
The feed on the website is like a 20 second delay otherwise.
The commercials get weird though. Instead of giving you the Columbus commercials, it feeds you a mix of Columbus commercials along with local commercials from whatever market you are listening from. And one of the ones that it often plays from "my" market is a Coke Zero commercial... en espanol.

Current TV tech allowing for synched home radio broadcasts is one of the best things about it.

Tennessee visits the Swamp today.
The Vols are 1-15 in the past 16 years vs the Gators.

Wedding tonight in Chicago. Just shoot me.
Was looking at going to the game, but WAY too much money for even a cheap seat in that shithole stadium, so no. Either gonna watch it in the room (55") or go to a sports bar. Not sure yet.
-
Beautiful weather here, that time of year of course, going to the Green Market shortly and then watch the Dawgs presumably run out Vandy. I'm interested in how Arkansas does, I've been high on them since preseason. I'm not high on ND, expect a low score, Wisconsin 24 ND 13 or something. I think Ohio State looks good against an inferior team and folks start thinking they fixed "it". Clemson @ NCSU is fascinating as well.

I idly wonder what percentage of the ND roster today is Catholic, versus say in 1950.

Up and awake in Scottsdale, getting coffee ready before walking my buddies Dalmatian in lead up to the early kickoffs. My buddy’s girlfriend is over in Tempe readying a tailgate for about 8 of us before we later today all attend Arizona State’s late game Vs Colorado.

Well then it is a good thing that the game is in Austin. ;D

Bait casting in the surf this beautiful morning as the annual mullet run has begun. Fun- sharks, snook, tarpon, jacks, all in close feeding. Standing barefoot in the sand and warm water.
Good football lineup. Looking forward to Badgers/Irish and Sparty/Huskers.
-
I like the noon games, but this feels like it should be a night game. Maybe due to the lack of great games today.

Minny not exactly rolling over Bowling Green

Have to leave here in 45 min to go to Long Beach and have lunch and go to a nature center for my wife's friend's birthday. Yay. Kids, California Pizza Kitchen, and a nature center, on a college football Saturday.

Vandy is bad
If the Dawgs can duplicate their 35 point first quarter three more times, it will be 140-0

I thought this took place in the rural south...

Ugh, is this what NFL football is like? If I see one more play-action rollout pass to the TE in the flat, I'm going to vomit.

Big replay here
-
That was a rough drive for Mertz
I pictured him telling someone he's not a game-manager.
Yes, yes, you are, son.
-
Touchdown Irish!
-
If that is a catch, I want UW's win against NU back from a few years ago, which was stolen.
-
Big replay here
Home cooking.
-
I like the confirmation on the replay.....
1 - it was great stick-to-it-iveness by the Badger DB, BUT
2 - it was a TD catch before it wasn't
Yes, in the end zone, that matters. Especially in the end zone.
-
Hey man I understand I'm still salty about OSU's touchdown against Clemson getting nullified - exact same play
-
Mertz is in a classic sophomore slump.
-
Did you see his stats vs UR teams and Ranked teams? This is who he is.
-
Pleasures of the flesh?
P!ss on the effing Irish.
-
Did you see his stats vs UR teams and Ranked teams? This is who he is.
yeah, agreed. He's just not very good. Recruiting sites misfire all the time on QB rankings. Hardest position to rank.

Wisc. v ND: Are the refs on the field ACC? I’m not liking what I’m seeing.
-
Texas looking great Vs Texas Tech.
Meanwhile, going into halftime in Starkville MS, LSU leads Mississippi St 7-3. Orgeron REALLY needs to hold onto this one given how tough the Tigers schedule gets going forward. Despite LSU’s lead they look pretty lifeless, with especially the offensive line looking disorganized. And when the QB does get good protection to throw, his passes are more likely off.
-
Mertz did manage to fumble twice on the same play. A legend
-
(https://thumbs.gfycat.com/LargeRelievedAntbear-size_restricted.gif)
-
Gophers look like hot canine fecal matter. Down 7-3 at the break. They took 1:19 and two timeouts to the locker room. OL getting stunted out of their mind and can't get any push. And this is against the worst team in 1A.
-
Wisc. v ND: Are the refs on the field ACC? I’m not liking what I’m seeing.
You can always count on home cooking for ND
-
Ok, that's more like it.

Wisconsin OL/run game does not look like what we're used to seeing, and Graham Mertz is just not very good.

Joel Klatt sucks. I can't stand listening to the guy call games.

did he though? do a deeper dig and you'll see that aside from a terrific performance vs a terrible Illinois team, he rally was kinda meh.

What'd he say?

Why wasn't Drew Pyne starting over Coan? He looks wayyyyyyy better than Coan lol.

Wisconsin CB got away with a PI right there on 3rd down.
-
Welp

Wisconsin front 7 looks fantastic. That was an incredible play but that DL.

In their 4 wins (7 games played) they put up 49,45,42,20 pts and had a 61% completion rate - maybe more the O-Line
-
Gophers right back to stinking up the New Brickhouse. BG kicker missed a FG but an illegal formation penalty bails them out.
This is the worst I've ever seen a Fleck Gopher team play.
-
WHEW
-
jesus that Tyree guy is fast.

Punting down 4 with 3 minutes left?!?!?! JFC

It worked out, but dammit I HATE punting in that spot.

Jesus I am so envious of both these defensive lines.

Mertz stinks

That was some yakety sax of a punt return

Never underestimate the luck of the Irish.

Mertz is so awful. It's shocking.
-
Minnesota and Wisconsin both appear to have QB issues when both positions looked pretty solid at the beginning of the year

It took 4 plays for FSU to get down, 7-0. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Bowling Green lost to South Alabama and got waxed by Tennessee. And beat Minny. Damn.

Mertz is so awful. It's shocking.
I wonder if it's too late to get Coan to transfer back?
I'm done with Mertz. Sorry. He does not have it.
3 picks, a fumble, all resulting in points. Even with an incompetent offense, UW wins today. Damn.

Mertz turned the ball over what 4 times? And Wisc gave up a special teams TD. Tough to win when you keep turning it over AND you give up ST's touchdowns.
-
ND-WIs turned into a video game
-
My goodness
-
Wisconsin outgained ND and only gave up less than 250 yards. I wonder what the record is for biggest blowout by a team that had fewer yards than its opponent

Mertz reminds me of Shane Morris. Looks great in t-shirts and shorts and has a great arm but kinda just sucks at you know, actually playing football.
-
Michigan CB's suck still. That's all.
-
Hutchinson got mugged- Rutger should've been called for two holds. Wtf. I'm not big for calling for holds but when it's THAT egregious....come on man- call that shit.

Hindsight. It's pretty good.
-
14-3. Michigan starting quick. McNamara and offense looking good. 2 drives, 2 touchdowns.
Michigan defense needs to clean some stuff up. Those CB's stink. And the refs need to freaking call Rutger for holding, because Hutchinson is literally getting raped out there and they aren't calling it for whatever fkn reason.
Also: there is no coach in history with a more punchable face than Greg Schiano. I will fight anyone to death over this. He has a face that just screams- punch me! please!
-
3-0 Terps up on Kent St 7-6 in nthe 1st

Well maybe you should give it a shot,he's prolly been in his share of scrums.Lloyd Carr was pretty punchable

Maybe A&M shouldn't have ordered the whole hog....
-
Hope the Razors keep it up
-
Pittman's little piggies look like full grown boars, headed to Athenstown next week.
-
17-3. McNamara looking good. However that last play-call/throw in the end-zone to Mike Sainistril: stupid. He's 5'9 on a good day. Should've schemed/thrown that to Cornelius Johnson.
Haskins much more effective running today than Corum. So of course- they give Corum like twice the carries. They use the shit out of the reverse/jet-sweep with AJ Henning first 3 weeks- yet don't try it once with Rutger over-committing to the run.
This is stupid coaching/play-calling/scheming. Same old shit, just a different day.
-
Iowa - Colo St knotted up at 7
-
Dax Hill. WTF bro? Clean kill shot- should've killed the QB on that blitz. Was completely unblocked- would've ended that drive and that QB's life- yet whiffs on the tackle. WTF?
-
Kalel Mullings should be starting over Josh Ross. He's got so much more burst and acceleration.
Gemon Green absolutely sucks. Mullings drills the QB as he throws it and the throw hits Green right in his hands. And he drops it. Yes it would've been a difficult INT. But the kid cannot make any plays ever to save his life. He's awful.

20-3 at the half.
McNamara looked great except for one missed throw to TE Luke Schoonmaker. Would've been a tough catch- but an elite TE makes that catch. Schoonmaker is a blocker. Can't do anything else but that.

Iowa better be careful.
I was starting to think that this FG fest between Illinois and Purdue might have the B1G West Title riding on it, with the way that Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern have been playing.

NC St goes up on Clemson 14-7 in the 3rd.

Very little attractive football today.

What?
Rutgers is not good. Michigan was dominating that game, it was 20-3 at the half, and it would've been 28-3 if not for two missed throws by Cade McNamara.
Jim Harbaugh is a retard who took his foot off the gas second half and kept running the ball up the middle on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down into an 8 man front. He can fk right off and suck on a bag of dicks. He is an actual retard and I just can't stand the guy anymore. He can seriously just fk right off.
-
Down goes Clemson
DJ Uglilelai is not anywhere near as good as I thought he would be.
-
Man, Clemson’s WR with a really poor effort on a 4th and 5 go route. He didn’t even throw a hand up for that
-
Gotta balance out the great sack by pulling a charles Martin.
Nobody beats Nebraska like Nebraska.
-
Magical game in Raleigh. Good for NC State and Coach Doeren. They’ve waited a long time for a big win like this.
Got Gators-Vols on now.

3rd and Grantham strikes again!

Logan Smothers in at QB. Sounds like a deadball era pitcher.

BTW, gotta watch the G-5 this year. A real shot at the playoffs possibly

Nebraska's improvement has been dramatic. But lost this one on special teams play. Nebraska's field goal, and extra point kicking improved. But return team defense, return teams, and punting stunk.

Good for him. Without that energy, we wouldn't have Scott Frost

They did a fantastic job. Best unit on the field. MSU had one splash play on offense, one splash play on defense, and Nebraska's punt team was trash. That was the game.

I'm also confused how a penalty on a return that could have ended the game is not simply enforced on the following possession. There was also a missed face mask, but that's par for the course
I noticed that too. Its like once a team is interecpted, they can commit any penalty they want to prevent the other team from returning it for a TD.
Now that I think about it, isn't there a rule that if an ineligible player runs onto the field to tackle a guy running for a TD, the other team is given a TD? Otherwise you might as well have the whole team run off from the sidelines to tackle the returner to prevent the TD.
You could use the same logic for other penalties on a interception in overtime. If the penalty helped prevent the returning team from scoring a TD, they should be given the TD and the game is over.

Nebraska's improvement has been dramatic. But lost this one on special teams play. Nebraska's field goal, and extra point kicking improved. But return team defense, return teams, and punting stunk.
The coverage on that punt return TD was unbelievably bad. It wasn't a case of Nebraska missing a couple tackles, but a case of there being absolutely no Nebraska players that ever came near the punt returner. I wish I knew what happened.

Arizona sucks, but they might low-key have my favorite helmet in college football

MSU had two returners back, and it seemed like all of Nebraska's coverage team ran at the wrong guy. I'm not sure I've ever seen it. It wasn't like the return on Thursday night, with the fake reverse, just every Nebraska player went the wrong way. My guess is they had an angled punt coverage on, and the punter kicked it the wrong direction. That's the only way that play made sense

Purdue is paying Brohm almost $6M a year to put up 13 points on the Illinois defense?
A win is a win, but WTF?!
-
Bielema punted today on 4th and 2 at the Purdue 34 in the 4th qtr. Such an NFL coaching move.
-
Minnesota and it's not close.
Yes, having seen the highlights of both games I agree.
Wisconsin had the lead in the 4th, then peed down their leg.
The Gophers best plays were all ugly as hell, nearly resulting in turnovers.

A lot of ranked teams looked bad yesterday and lost or barely won, it was like an Upset Sat.
Tech beat UNC. I had UNC on my list of teams over ranked (along with A&M), and UNC is worse than I expected. I thought Clemson would be "OK" and they aren't. The ACC is wide open now, not that it matters much.
Auburn nearly pulled a Tennessee.

This is exactly what happen according to Frost in the post game press conference.

At one time the looked like Auburn's - both classic IMO
-
Should be some close games next week
Michigan at Wisconsin
Minnesota at Purdue
Iowa at Maryland
Ohio State at Rutgers
hell maybe even Indiana @ Penn State
-
Northwestern at Nebraska is always close
no offense

didn't have the energy to watch the post game presser, but if this wasn't the reason I'd be even more upset
they have 2 punters - both are horrible
many Nebraska high school teams have better punters

I see it every so often, it just rarely works as completely as it did for MSU.
Kadarius Toney's PR TD last year was similar for Florida.
.
But it's a case of a punter kicking the ball on the wrong HALF of his foot, which is insane. A shank means you kicked the ball an inch or two off target towards the outer edge of the foot. Fine, whatever. But to accidently kick the ball with the inner half...hell, it's not even half, it's a diagonal line from the big toe to the middle of the leg...to miss that badly is nuts.

USC gets blown out at home by Oregon State. Hopefully Donte Williams does so bad there as interim HC that he isn't kept on in any capacity by the new coach. Domani Jackson = Michigan lock if that happens.

Long season MDoT,gotta wait till the ink dries

They just look so much like Auburn to me, when suited out like that. I like the look but it's not unique.

You could use the same logic for other penalties on a interception in overtime. If the penalty helped prevent the returning team from scoring a TD, they should be given the TD and the game is over.
The awarding of a touchdown is at the discretion of the referee. IF the referee determines that the foul that was committed by the offending team was so egregious, he can award a touchdown as part of the penalty enforcement. Generally speaking, the only times I have ever heard of this is when a non player (not one of the 11 players legally on the field at the start of the play) becomes actively involved in the play. To my knowledge, there are no penalties or circumstances short of an actual illegal act (killing another person at which point the game becomes meaningless) that would allow the officials to award a touchdown.

As long as the player was one of the 11 players legally on the field at the start of the play, I cannot think of a penalty that would result in the awarding of a touchdown.
