Wow. This should be an awesome game. I'm really excited for it. (Little disappointed in not making the playoff, but 2 losses is 2 losses, and a 1 loss was out there and ranked higher)
Again, my goals every season for OSU:
1) Beat *ichigan - Check
2) Win The Big Ten - Check
3) Play in the Rose bowl - well as close as we could get this year. It's Big Champ vs. Pac champ, they just moved the location to practically a neutral site. Cotton is like a Rose isn't it?
This very well could be the battle of whose motivated game; OSU was campaigning for a bigger prize and didn't get it. USC's NFL talent QB could already check out and looks towards his Sunday stock, in this consolation bowl.

USC leads the all time series 13-9-1, including 4-3 in Bowl games; all of which have been the Rose Bowl.
USC is riding a seven game winning streak, that dates back to the 1975 Rose Bowl.

Yeah, we haven't.
I actually was looking for this thread earlier and couldn't find it.
This series bothers me so I really hope that we can get back in the win column. The Bucks led this series 9-7-1 before I was born but are a dreadful 0-6 in my lifetime. There are some really tough losses within the seven game losing streak:
- 1974 season, 1975 Rosebowl: USC won 18-17. The Buckeyes suffered a single loss that year, at MSU and were 10-1 and #3 heading into the RoseBowl. #1 Oklahoma was ineligible due to one of their periodic run-ins with the NCAA. #2 Bama lost to #9 Notre Dame (who had just gotten demolished by USC). #4 Michigan got no bowl due to the BigTen's RoseBowl only policy. USC was #5. A win would likely have given the Buckeyes at least part of an NC.
- 1979 season, 1980 Rosebowl: USC won 17-16. The Buckeyes were undefeated and #1 heading into the bowls. #2 Bama beat #6 Arkansas in the SugarBowl. USC was #3. #4 FSU lost to #5 Oklahoma in OrangeBowl. Bama and FSU were also undefeated while #3 USC had a tie with Stanford, #5 OU had lost to Texas, and #6 Arkansas had lost to Houston. This one cost Ohio State an NC.
- 1984 season, 1985 RoseBowl: USC won 20-17. This loss was pretty much preordained because it came in the midst of Earle Bruce's run of six straight 9-3 seasons and the Buckeyes came in 9-2.
- 1989 season in SoCal: USC won 42-3. Cooper's second season and just not a good time to travel to the West Coast to take on a very good team.
- 1990 season in Columbus: USC won 35-26. 1990 was not a good year for Ohio State but it wasn't very good for USC either and the Buckeyes really should have won this game.
- 2008 season in SoCal: USC won 35-3. This was a major blow to Ohio State's national reputation following on the heels of back-to-back bad BCSCG losses to SEC teams.
- 2009 season in Columbus: USC won 18-15. There really is no explanation for this loss. The Trojans lost that year to 5-7 Washington, 10-3 Oregon (whom Ohio State beat in the RoseBowl), 8-5 Stanford, and 8-5 Arizona.
Seven straight losses with four of them being by a FG or less. Ugh.
The Buckeye's nine wins were by:
- 33
- 21 twice
- 20 twice
- 17
- 16
- 13
- 11
USC's 13 wins were by:
- 39
- 32 twice
- 29
- 25
- 17
- 9
- 7
- 3 twice
- 1 three times
Granted, USC does have some big wins but it just sucks for the Buckeyes to be 0-6 in games decided by a TD or less. If the Buckeyes were a mere 2-4 in the close ones the series would be tied and the Buckeyes would likely have another NC or two.

From an OZone article (https://theozone.net/2017/12/absentee-granddaddy-25-years-new-years-near-misses/) about all of Ohio State's Rose Bowl non-appearances:
"2017: The Rose Bowl is a playoff game, and the Big Ten champion Buckeyes were left sitting on the curb outside because they’re not on the bouncer’s list.
Don’t worry, though. The sunset over the Wal-Mart next to Jerry World is supposedly just as majestic as the one over the San Gabriel Mountains."

I've talked with a lot of people who went to the Badger game down there last year, against WMU.
The reviews were not positive as to the area, but hey, it's OSU/USC.
You gotta like that.

Yeah stadium setting-wise Jerry's World pales in comparison to the Rose Bowl. But travelling Buckeyes shouldn't find a shortage of nice places to stay/things to do as long as they stay in Dallas or Ft Worth. Don't bother with Arlington other than the game itself.
-
Yeah, it's not the playoffs, and it's not the Rose Bowl, and so what it is? I dunno, but interesting it is not.

So, this is not Rose Bowl-East. It's more like Glendale-East?

Ha! Exactly.

Who was it that delivered that devastating hit on OJ Simpson in the 69 Rose Bowl?

I was at this game and I am still convinced that Charles White did not cross the goal line on that last TD.

I though the White Phantom TD was the previous year against Michigan?

It was. White jumped over the Line for his TD in this game and he was in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVECCzfaG4s

Found it.
It was Jack Tatum that decleated the Juice.

I went to the first real football game in Jerry World--the 2009 OU-BYU game--and found that all the bells and whistles distracted from watching what was going on on the field. The jumbotrons were so jumbo that they dwarfed the action on the field. It became easier to watch them than the live action.
Not one of my favorite sites to watch a football game.
Concessions were extremely expensive too. IIRC, a small bottle of water was $8.00.

Wow, can't believe that place is nearly a decade old. I assume he'll want a new one shortly?

Shows you how a 19yo remembers a game from so many years ago. Of course, I was also on the other end of the Stadium in the Ohio State Student section and didn't have a great view of the action down there.

OSU fans haven't moved on from the CFP selection yet
I've never moved to it after Iowa. The rest of the contenders would have had to have a similar drubbing with two losses. That did not happen which left the prospects dead on the vine

Anybody on here heading to Texas for this one?

well, it's gameday. not real thrilled about major bowl games being played on 12/29/17, a Friday. I think that sucks. I would of much preferred playing on Saturday or the 1st. I would have even taken a game on the 31st, screw the NFL, their rating suck anyways.
with that being said, I think OSU has an excellent chance to take it to USC in this game, but I'm expecting a heavy dose of JT left JT right per usual. I can only dream of Dobbins/Weber getting 25 carries and airing the ball out a little bit. But I think no matter what OSU calls, they should score at least 30 in this game unless they have an Iowa meltdown.
The wild card is Darnold, not that he's necessarily inconsistent or anything, but can he go nuts like he did in the Rose Bowl last year? I think a lot depends on if the OSU defensive line shows up or not. They've been good this year, great at times like against Wisconsin, and at other times just ok. If they bring their ok game and Darnold has time to sit in the pocket, then I think the OSU LB/DB's will struggle to control the SC WRs and the Trojans might go off.
In the grand scheme of things this game doesn't mean a whole lot other than pride, will both teams show up ready to rock and roll? I think they will, but I also think at this point OSU still has overall a better roster than USC, and that depth will help them to a 38-24 victory.
-
I think the buckeyes take this one, my guess is 38-27.
-
Worst two announcers! I bet Huerd is wearing USC Underoo's.....watch ing on mute, because I can not stand all the USC slobbing.......
-
I'm rooting for Ohio State, but USC got hosed on that DPI no-call.
-
Dumbest offense ever!

Barn burner

I made the right choice in clearing the driveway and sidewalks during the 2nd half.

I loved me some Tressel Ball tonight.

I'm just glad we finally have a win over USC in my lifetime. We had been 0-6 in my lifetime, part of a difficult seven-game losing streak.

So...We lost internet during the "snow storm" last night (end of the known universe right?) Or I would have posted more during this game.
All my IRL friends had out of town plans for this game, and I ended up watching it with my family (wife 2 small girls.) The girls fell asleep~ish in my arms in the 1st half and I ended up doing silent cheers most of the game. A really weird way for me to watch game.
I noticed Meyer said a multitude of times after the win "most likely a top 5 finish for this team." Is that him throwing some shade towards the committee for the beauty pageant selection of the 4th place team?
-
Are the wife and daughters all Buckeye fans?
-
Hubbard and Bosa lived in that USC backfield. I'd bet Bosa would be a 1st if he was eligible in this upcoming draft.
-
That was a dominating performance by the Buckeye defense.

No. In the previous years of the CFP the 4teams have not finished as the 4 teams. For example, OSU finished in the top 3 in 2015 when they didn’t make the playoff. Last year, they were 6th or 7th and behind the Oklahoma team they spanked on the road. Made no sense to me.
-
Depending on how things shake out, the B1G could have 3 teams in the top 6. Already have 2, and that won't change.
-

Spouse is a UC grad, and the Bearcats are her number 1 team, but she is a totally a Buckeye T-shirt fan.
6 year old humors dads buckeye passion, but claims to not like watching sports in general.
4 year cheers on the Bucks with daddy, but loves to color everything blue with yellow highlights because those 2 colors gets a reaction out of me.

I'm hoping for 3 in the top 5
-
At the moment, halftime of rose, the SEC might have no top 5 teams but 2 in playoffs. Seems like a fair system
-
well that's changed quickly. OU up 17 and the Dawgs score 10 real quick to make it a game.
