Domestic engineers, or their subordinates: Indicate here how your supply of TP is holding out by # of rolls. Elaborate why.
-
We always have a large (costco type) pack of Charmin at home, sometimes 1 1/2. I learned my wife ordered some a couple weeks ago too, and sure enough, they arrived last week. I also always have a zillion ziplock bags of various sizes and paper towels. I don't live in a shoebox, and I haven't been single in awhile. This isn't unusual.
-
The stores are stocked here, so no issue, haven't even bought when they have it.
-
Stores here are stocked again. The hoarding appears to have ended, although it may start up again now that we are going to 4/30.
-
I'm just back from Kroger, I didn't see anything out of stock outside the pharmacy aisles. Cold medications were out. The TP aisle was about half full, which means plenty, and they had some Kroger brand stacked in front near the registers.
-
People hoarding cold medicine is really ignorant. That's happening here too, I've been told.
-
I received the shipment of TP from my brother through the mail when I was down to my last roll. Good timing.
It's been tricky looking for TP while trying not to interact with people much...and I struck out every time.
-
I am the Toilet Paper Czar of Austin.
I did not intentionally hoard, but I didn't realize my i s c & a aggie wife had a large stash, when I bought a large package, just before all this started.
On the bright side, I will not be competing with any of you for whatever toilet paper IS available, for the next 6 months or so...
-
Florida is bad, I'm told by some friends. Arizona too, per Mrs. 847's parents.
Older people are hoarders??

Yeah, I was going to say that seems like a low threshold. At basically all times we have at least 5. When we are down to 3-4 we pick up another pack during our weekly Sam's Club run.
-
We still have an unopened pack of Sam's Club TP (about 45 rolls). My wife bought this a couple of weeks before the hoarders went nuts.
-

Oh, I meant a constant reserve of 1 or 1 1/2 massive Costco SKU's , not 1 or 1 1/2 rolls. It's like a Net Capital requirement, 'Thou shall have 24 or more rolls at all times at the MH household.' It would be unusual for us to have fewer than 12 rolls on hand.
-
not sure how many rolls my daughter has in the basement, she took the last package I bought down with her a week ago. Was a small pack, probably 12 rolls.
as long as I'm working at the office and using their TP the 5 large rolls in my bathroom will last a few months
I go to the grocery once a week, wasn't any in stock last week, I'll try again later this week.
-
Wife actually has some deal online where our TP is shipped to us every so often. Same deal with dog food. We have a case of 36 rolls in the garage that just last night we had to get into since this whole thing started. I bought an additional package of 12 the other day at the store just because it was the first time I had actually seen any on a store shelf around here.
-

My GUESS is someone is in the store and thinks they should get "some" because they might be low at home, while normally they would not think of it at all, or they see someone else getting some. It probably isn't one person buying up the stock.
-
Cold medicine does nothing for this thing.
That was just another "fake news" item on the intergoogle about a week ago. Or book face.
-
A lot of folks with a cold go to the doctor and ask for penicillin etc. to knock it out. A LOT of people.
-
snowflakes
-
Half my house is allergic to penicillin and certain other antibiotics.
-
Just moved 6 rolls in from the garage to the bathroom this weekend.
I suspect we're down to about a 4 week supply of TP right now, which is starting to get into the normal range where my wife will buy more. So we'll be on the lookout.
-
Once folks see plenty of TP in stores, they will quit buying it of course. I think we're near that point. There is plenty here already.
-
I never got hoarding this.I filled my cart with staples/basics a few weeks back.Prolly make a trip in a week.I could substitute lots of thing for TP,not so much with ground beef

I'm sure many folks unwittingly have stumbled in to something that works.I've been doing 1 ounce a day of Mr Beams Elixir,it could be working

And the bleach fumes from the spray

I was allergic to penicillin as a kid
20 years ago I asked a friend of mine "the dentist" if he could prescribe an antibiotic for me.
I had no idea, but he prescribed penicillin. I took the whole bottle w/o an issue. Was told my my medical doc that many folks grow out of that.
Apparently I did. Good to know, but it could have been the other way
-

1 oz a day wouldn't be nearly enuff for an effective dosage

Duly noted

I think it might actually be that after a single reaction while on penicillin, it's assumed that the allergy exists. But in most cases the reaction is misdiagnosed as a real allergy.
My daughter had a reaction last fall. Broke out in a terrible rash all over her body. At urgent care the doc said that >90% of cases where this happens, there's no underlying allergy.
He actually said the same thing happened to his son, and one night years ago when he was working in the ER (and his son often hung out doing homework) that they weren't busy, he administered his son the penicillin to test--with all the necessary safety precautions to handle a reaction, of course, being a doctor in an ER. His son showed no reaction whatsoever.
For now, we're assuming that my daughter has an allergy. But sometime between now and her reaching 18, I'd plan to take her to allergist to be tested for a real allergy, so that we'll know.

Not any TP in Arizona...because we don't have trees, obviously.
You guys hoard the TP in non-apocolyptic times, it sounds like. Damn, I get the 4-roll pack whenever. I can't fathom having a weekly trip to Sams or Costco....you guys really were keeping the economy afloat.
-
you don't have women in your house, apparently
-
We're above 5, but not much. Damn stores are just dry.
-

The main thing needed in papermaking is water. A lot of the pulp comes from Canada or Brazil for making toilet paper anyway. But you need water (unless you airlay it which is too expensive). Papermachines are fascinating beasts, often over 300 feet in length and 20-30 feet wide or more running around 50 mph.

There is plenty of water in AZ, and trees too. Just not in the desert, where people shouldn't live anyway.

One of my wife's greatest fears is running out of toiler paper. When we met, she had 2-24 mega roll pack and a partial for just herself with a standing monthly order from Amazon.
Well, I got her down to only having 1-24 mega roll pack plus a partial for the two of us with her still in a panic when we broken into the pack if a new one hadn't arrived yet. Needless to say when this all hit, she immediately reinitiated her standing order, we once again have 2-24 mega roll packs and a partial.
-
Hand-held shower head. Just sayin'.
-
Bidets are all the rage.

I made a quick run to Walmart this AM for some items, early so they'd be uncrowded. They had a lady by the carts wiping them all down.
They appeared to be fully stocked with everything, even grated cheese. The wife likes these little bottles of liquid yogurt and they are $4.19 there versus $5.69 at Kroger.
-
I went to Walmart yesterday, and still no TP. I did grab 2 rolls of paper towels, I didn't have any.
No line for TP, either, so maybe that's progress?
It's funny to see the items that still go unbought, despite people going a little nutty.
-

why not simply drink milk?
-
Does the TP situation increase or decrease the odds of someone getting their house toilet papered by a group of neighborhood kids? On one hand folks are behaving as though they "can't spare a square" but on the other hand 1,000 rolls of TP stashed away in the basement would be a temptation that very few 7th grade boys would have the willpower to resist.
-
We still haven't touched the 3 9 packs I got when everything 1st got shut down.
-
I'd feel better if I could find a 9 pack this week
but, I'm not sweating it yet
-
I finally bought some TP this morning at Walmart. I went right when they opened, and they only had about 1/8th of that aisle full. I bypassed the 9-pack for a 4-pack, having gotten some from my brother through the mail already, and I'm just one person.
.
-
If you don't use toilet paper much, you must be full of shit.
-
4 pack = 4 weeks
-
Seems like such a strange thing to hoard. Everyone has a drawer full of old t shirts or socks that they can cut up and use as a substitute. I heard that dryer sheets work pretty well also, but haven't tried it myself.

Might smell good?
-
I wouldn't flush a dryer sheet obviously. The paper machines that make paper towels can and do make toilet paper (and facial tissue). I imagine most have shifted over by now, though the next step in the process (converting) is specific to making each type. You get a huge roll of paper off a paper machine, something like 25 feet in diameter and 25 feet across, that is sawed in half and then unwound to be rewound onto the cardboard rolls.
People will "panic buy" as the first dribs get onto shelves and then we'll be awash in TP.
You can use facial tissue, it has a similar composition, but the wet strength doesn't decay, so you shouldn't flush it.
-
Saw a couple of weeks ago, the manufacturers of toilet paper stating they had no intentions of increasing capacity to increase supply, because there's not any actual increase in demand. It's simply time-shifted to the left. The people panic buying toilet paper now, won't be buying toilet paper at all in 3 months. They just needed time for the supply chain to catch up and refill retail shelves from buffer stock.
But I have to say, here we are over 3 weeks later and there are still spot shortages around the country.
The truth is that a lot of people are working from home, so there actually IS increased demand for consumer toilet paper products. And there are massive supplies of toilet paper sitting unused in the bathrooms of this country's empty office buildings, in their storage closets, and in their vendors' warehouses.
Once again, just like with food, we see that the lack of flexibility between the Commercial supply chain, and the Consumer supply chain, resulting in spot shortages for various items on consumer retailer shelves, when in reality there is plenty of supply, it's just in the wrong place, and also not appropriately packaged for consumer purchase.
Anyway, just the thoughts of a longtime supply chain manager, on this Friday morning.

I saw press releases by KMB and PG saying they were making as much TP as possible, and had put on extra shipping to deliver it.
But, yes, TP in buildings and hotels is probably flush.

Yeah, I'm not surprised they'd change their stance from a month ago, given the ongoing demand for consumer-packaged toilet paper.
One of the main problems with the bifurcated supply chain, is that consumer packaging has UPC labeling, and the commercial supply generally doesn't. All products are scanned into, and out of, the grocery store. But that's not true of all of the commercial supply. And of course, commercial supply is packaged into huge containers, while consumer supply can be packaged in much smaller increments.

I know I'm not being entirely accurate, but I feel this way about gas - when prices spike and gas stations are full on Friday afternoons - think 2008/2012 prices. I can't help but think - this is stupid, how many millions of gallons are being squandered by NASCAR? There's no actual shortage, we're still burning it for sport. Even though I know it's a relative drop in the bucket, it's a different kind of fuel, and it's privately purchased anyway, my mind still goes there.
-
My brother went to the store yesterday - his weekly trip. TP was just about fully stocked. The hoarders are done, or they ran out of storage.
Talked to my buddy in Florida this morning. What a shit show.
Older people are hoarders, apparently. He told me he would love for me to ship him some as he is down to 2 rolls, but he'd be afraid that the USPS/UPS/FedEx driver would "lose" the package. He's going over to the yacht club (which is closed to the general public but not to members - 6 at a time allowed) today to see if he can "borrow" some.

Send him some in a box with the biohazard logo on it and write "COVID19 Testing Samples" on the outside. That might convince the local drivers not to mess with it. :)
(yeah yeah I know it would never make it that far)
-
If you're running low on TP, and in the Vegas area, go to the public restrooms in the Venetian. To this day, the only public TP that isn't half-ply.

Our office buildings do 2-ply, and it's pretty soft too. Not Charmin or anything, but way better than most.

HA!just use the biohazard and samples.Course they prolly have their own delivery with anything like that.Could try "Live Bait" provided the driver isn't a Tournament Fisherman

Just what on earth are we to do with this magnificent bit of info - dig a whole behind the garage?
-
Well, worst case, put it in a zip lock bag and put in garbage, like folks do with dog poo.
-
Yeah, the MWRDGC came out and asked the public to not flush things that are not toilet paper. They were seeing paper towel, Kleenex, t-shirts and other "stuff" coming into their treatment plants. Not good.
It's a toilet, not a garbage can.

Don't Flush It!
The recent Coronavirus and COVID-19 health issue has created a temporary shortage of toilet paper. If shortages continue, people may attempt to use alternative products. Residents and businesses need to recognize what not to flush in toilets. Do NOT flush any of the following:
- Baby or toilet wipes (flushable wipes may be used, but in minimum quantity and flushed one at a time), towelettes, disinfecting wipes, cloth wipes, paper towels, napkins, or Kleenex;
- Diapers;
- Paper products or cotton swabs;
- Feminine hygiene products or other personal care items;
- Rags or mop heads; and
- Medications.
If you use any of the above listed items, please dispose of them properly and NOT in the toilet. For any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at (847) 705-5200.
-
Well, worst case, put it in a zip lock bag and put in garbage, like folks do with dog poo.
If I run out of TP might take the plunger route
-
If you have a septic tank, you should be more careful about what is flushed. Facial tissue will eventually degrade at least.
-
You're obviously not talking Budweiser
check the thread title
it's not butt wiper
-

Well I'm holed up about 120 miles away. Not terribly close, but probably quite a bit closer than anyone else.
Of course the casinos are all closed.
-
Rags or mop heads;????
seems reasonable to me

A buddy of mine runs a carpet cleaning service in LV. He says the city is likely to be hardest hit economically of any in the country, perhaps the world.

perhaps I'll be able to purchase a decent retirement house on the golf course near Vegas if the market crashes again as it did 10 or 15 years ago

This could be a quick in and out depression, hopefully, .... or not.

Man, it is barely April and it is already scorching hot here.
I'm like a snow bird in reverse. Winter up north, and summer down south.
I think that I am doing it wrong.

I'm thinking I'm old enough to play a round of golf in the early morning - thinking the crack of dawn
Then nap in the A/C the rest of the afternoon

Beautiful day here, but I'm stuck inside as two guys replace one of our heat pumps. They are making good progress it seems. The "old" one was 6 years old.
With a 5 year warranty.
They aren't exactly cheap. The first estimate I got was nearly $8 K. I asked for the details by email and he never sent anything. A second estimate was promised and never came at all (two weeks ago). I don't get it.
-
I'd wait a few weeks before sending a check
-
Well, the new unit is here now partially installed, he said he needed some parts. It looks nice, but it sits in a closet and I won't ever see it except to change the filter. He did say the upstairs unit is in good shape.
This is a water sourced heat pump.
-

For some reason I thought the heat source was burning toilet paper. Or, is the filter made from toilet paper?
I'm confused.

Of late, threads have tended to meander probably because many of us are bored.

Pretty much, I guess.

Not me, just taught for 2 hours, then cut 10 teams for Whoa Nellie. I made 45 Army and now someone wants to know if I can make 63 Navy.
Who wants a job?
-
It's my B12 influence perhaps. There's no such thing as "staying on topic" down in the B12 forum.
In truth I've always thought it peculiar, how militant some of you B1G folk tend to be, about it.
-
Come on guys, this is a very important topic. Stay focused.
So, uh, do you wipe "front to back" in the recommended, sanitary method? Or do you like to add a little coney sauce to the beans and frank?
-
Hand-held shower head is the most sanitary way to clean up any mess.
Of course, if you eat right, there shouldn't be any mess.
-
I find drinking exacerbates the mess.
-
Of course, if you eat right, there shouldn't be any mess.
Are you new here?
-
A momentary lapse. Forgive me.
-
Yes, if you are home you can just hop in the shower right quick. But that is venturing out into the weeds a little bit, seeing as the thread topic is toilet paper and not soap and water. Come on people, focus.
-
Having a hand-held shower head helps your toilet paper supply hold out.
I submit that this position be allowed here.
-
Idk. I can’t imagine a shower head would clean me well enough without me doing some manual labor in that area.
-
You need a booster pump for your water pressure then.
-
"We" get into some interesting discussions.
I'd like to think it's because "we" are interesting, intelligent people.
I'm sure that's it.
-
Pump that water pressure up too high, and you might do some serious damage to the neighboring area.
-
You all do realize why COVID-19 has caused a TP shortage, right?
Because as soon as 1 person coughs, 10 people sh!t themselves.
-

careful, could blow the hair off your ass

I'm a human.
I'm not a hairy naked man.

I dunno.
An accurate shot with the water pressure cranked up too high, and you'll be cleaning off the back of your teeth. ;D

Oh dear god please don't let this thread devolve into Badge's manscaping regimen.
I think he'll do it to punish us for going OT! :sign0135:

LMAO. You guys are.. something else.
And I love ya.

ya know....... I can get past the Pedicure enjoyment, but don't tell me you have someone shave your ass

I never said that.
I do miss my pedicures. Can't do that right now.

Found another 24-pack of TP that got stuffed into the back of the guest bedroom closet. All this deep cleaning is turning up a multitude of things.
So now I think I'm back up to being over 100 rolls again.
Sorry...
-
You could donate them, as if you never had them in the first place. The pantries would love to be able to hand some out to those in need.
-
Did y'all know that Charmin and Quilted Northern went into a court battle over which was the "softest?" At the time, my cousin was a VP at the parent company of Quilted Northern (which I believe was Georgia Pacific), and Quilted Northern was among the brands he managed. He had to go into court and talk about their scientific tests they'd run, in order to make the claim they were the softest. It was all pretty interesting stuff. I forget who won that case, I'm sure the intergoogles could tell me.
-
You could donate them, as if you never had them in the first place. The pantries would love to be able to hand some out to those in need.
But then I'd have to leave my safe space and interact with the infected zombie people...
-
some day in the future...
I may venture out today in search of a 12-pack of squeezably soft stuff
-
I never said that.

very good to know

Ha!
I promise I'm honoring stay-at-home quite well.
Unfortunately my i s c & a aggie wife is back to work, their clinic reopened last week after 2 weeks of going dark. They're doing everything they can to limit contact and interaction, wearing masks and changing gloves all the time, and never more than 10 folks in the building at any given time. But if this thing is as transmissible as SOME say, then simply sharing airspace for 20-30 minutes with an infected person, is enough to catch it. So our entire family is once again at risk.
We've cut off all physical contact with our parents, who are all aged 77-83. We facetime and skype with them just about every day of course. This is all pretty crappy but it's where we're at right now.
-
I think anyone over 70 or with respiratory problems should be in a hard quarantine now. Someone can bring them groceries etc. and let it sit in the sun for a bit. I'm taking general precautions myself. It's another beautiful day here and sunlight should denature this thing. The ATL has gone to a higher level of "stay home" with the usual loopholes that are pretty large.
-
I would have had a week gap of no TP without having my brother mail me some. Fun.
.
According to a random site, AZ's corona cases won't peak for 24 days. Funnnnnn.

After an extremely rainy March, we're off to a cold April in Oklahoma. Lows just above freezing the past couple of nights.
North Texas is cold too, per my sister who lives just north of Dallas.
Will March rains and April freezes bring May breezes?

This gives you a rough idea of the size of these machines. They take in pulp in water at one end, the pulp is often around 0.1% consistency with the rest water, and change it into a dried sheet at the other end. The final roll may be 300 inches across and 15 feet in diameter. They are quite noisy.
-
I've seen one of those in action, in Wisconsin. Noisy is an understatement. Deafening is more like it.
-
That's awesome
-
Our paper plants had a GE gas turbine that provided power and the waste heat was used to dry the paper. It was a neat setup, and they sold power back to the utility. One of our plants was over 1.5 miles long, I drove the car and measured it. That includes a lot of warehouse space. When we toured the warehouse I saw the little rail cars and thought it near they had half sized rail cars in the warehouse.
They weren't half sized.
The last I knew a new tissue papermachine cost over $350 million. We had six at the plant I toured. The paper we use in printers and whatnot is quite different.

no TP at the grocery yesterday afternoon
10 rolls left upstairs in my house, I imagine the daughter's supply downstairs is running low
when the daughter takes 3 rolls to the basement I'll become concerned, that will put us at about 2 weeks
-
I'd be sending my daughter out to hunt for the stuff, but that's just me.
-
that very well might happen

I hope so. Gotta work for what you get, and all that.
-
I'd be sending my daughter out to hunt for the stuff, but that's just me.
Roll Call
-
The wife wants to go to Costco. They have senior hours Tue-Wed-Thu early and I convinced her to wait until tomorrow. We're OK on TP, but I go through their Napa Cab "box wine" like water these days. $13 for 3 L and it's imminently quaffable. I also like their lamb chops and steelhead trout.
I'm on the edge of thinking the worst is over for the US. I might be buying some stock today, futures are up sharply.
I hope we can get to some modified openings of local businesses, emphasizing distancing etc., fairly soon. Move the tables further apart. That could still be end of month and a lot of places won't make it unless they get rent relief. I imagine some buildings leasing space are going to have to allow a missed payment or three or just have an empty shell for a while.
I hate to be optimistic, it's really depressing.

I think things are likely to start opening back up in some limited capacity at the end of this month or very early May. I don't think the nation's going to tolerate much more than that.
I suspect that schools will remain stay-at-home through the end of the schoolyear, though. That's a threat vector that is already managed and I don't believe there will be much push to change it back. Perhaps some kind of social week or even a single social day at the end of May or beginning of June, to let all the kids see each other one last time before summer break.

One of my kids already had the announcement that they won't be coming back this year. The other two haven't been formally announced, but I'm expecting it shortly.
Of course, now a reporter has apparently asked POTUS why he hasn't closed the grocery stores, so my wife is freaking out that Newsom is going to close the grocery stores...
-
Closing grocery stores would induce the kind of violent panic I've been fearing. What a terrible idea. How on earth do they believe people are supposed to get food?
And yeah, right now we're "officially" school-at-home through April 13th. Dallas and Houston have announced through May 4th. By the end of this week we'll align to Dallas and Houston, and then a couple of weeks later, everyone will push it through the end of the schoolyear.

The local Kroger stopped home delivery of baby wipes, toilet paper and bottled water
Now they have started providing baby wipes and bottled water for home delivery
Toilet paper is still not available for home delivery

Not gonna happen.

Which isn't going to happen-- the closing of the grocery stores, or the ensuing violent panic?
-
I think they should close the grocery stores, hospitals and police stations

Well that would achieve... something... I suppose! :)

The 2020 HUNGER GAMES!

Our state department of education announced about 10 days ago that schools were closed for the rest of the academic year. We're doing "distant learning" now. Apparently most of the country is doing the same and some of our apps are crashing or acting erratically from the overload.

I stopped at Costco today and they had toilet paper lined all around the warehouse. Not Kirkland brand though :(
-
My wife picked up TP in a Neighborhood Wal Mart today.
-
Costco had plenty early this AM Kroger was stripped bare 30 minutes later.
-
checked with the daughter
she has 3 rolls downstairs - 3 rolls upstairs
I have 6 rolls - I think we're good for another 2 weeks
-
We're still good through 2021 maybe. Thanks for asking.
-
I had a friend who opened the walk-in door to our garage and dropped 12 rolls for us a few days ago. A thoughtful gift. We are well-stocked, so I am thinking we have some to gift to our elderly neighbor if she needs it.
-
Hopefully TP will be a good gag-gift this Christmas, instead of a genuine one.
-
The first house I walk by this summer with the garage open and pallets of TP is getting TP'd.

If you're gonna do that, do it with their TP and not your own.
