Definitely college football. I don't really care that much about the USMNT winning the World Cup. It would be cool and all, but it's not like I have a bunch of French neighbors I'd be bragging to.

I'm guessing everyone here would also pick a national championship over their favorite NFL team winning the Super Bowl. So I guess people are also apathetic about the NFL by that standard

Yup.
I'd also take a college football national championship over a college baseball national championship or college volleyball national championshiop, yet those are still sports that I enjoy and discuss year-round-- just like soccer.

It's just a weird and unnecessary attempt at a gotcha, on a message board dedicated to college football.
The people who like soccer, enjoy it and talk about it year-round. Regardless of whether or not the USMNT is performing well, and regardless of whether or not the World Cup tournament is in progress.
On this message board the soccer fans are a minority. In the US in general, soccer fans are a minority. Nobody's disputing that, nobody's challenging that. Which is what makes the attempted gotcha so strange and out of place.

Unlike some of you, my team has never won the NC. As a CFB fan, if they had, I'd *still* probably take an NC before the USMNT winning the WC. But given that Purdue has never won it (and now Indiana--eewwwww!--has), it's not even close. OF COURSE I'd take my own personal team winning an NC over a US WC win.

outside a very few people I know, no one cares about the world cup. I know not statistical. In fact the only person I know who even knows anything about the various soccer teams is my son-in-law and he happens to be Mexican and I think it matters what ethnicity a person who lives in the US when it comes to soccer.
They only world cup match that I have seen anything was last Sunday and only because my son-in-law was over and I had it on the TV for him.

Yes, I expect Belgium-Spain to be lower viewership than US-Belgium.
Yes, I believe that is due to the fact that the US is no longer in the tournament.
Yes, this is due to the fact that the US is not a historically-strong soccer viewership nation, but as a nation of 340M people, the inclusion of American "casual fans" who are just watching b/c of the US' involvement--and I'm one of them--will create a viewership spike.
This is 100% expected. That doesn't mean that the US doesn't have real soccer fans, and/or that those fans will stop watching.

Soccer's fun to watch. I really enjoy it. It's not a competition with college football, and it's certainly possible to like more than one sport at a time.
You're also allowed to like both comedy movies, AND dramas! You can like both rock music, AND country. You can like both cake, AND pie! This is all permissible and even common!

My apathy about cfb in general and LSU in particular is well-documented here. I first noticed it in 2014. It wasn't sudden, like an on/off switch, but gradual. By the time 2019 came around, I can't say I didn't enjoy anything, but it was nothing like I felt in 2003 or 2007. Hell, there's plenty of non-title seasons I enjoyed more than that. My interest was beginning to reach the nadir at that time. For various reasons, I just don't enjoy it like I used to. I recall the passing game was objectively fascinating to watch, but my personal enjoyment as a fan wasn't nearly as present as it used to be.
I still get some entertainment from the games, but often I think it's just because it passes the time, and I wonder if I'd still bother if the wife didn't still love it. I mainly post here not because of the cfb origin, but because I've known you goons for 20 years now.
Then there's what @betarhoalphadelta (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=19) pointed out, about being a Purdue fan and his team not having sniffed a title for his entire fandom. I imagine that plays a role in my blase attitude. I got to experience the mountaintop as a fan. Maybe it becomes less meaningful if you've already had that experience.
OTOH, while I'm not a soccer fan, I just think it would be cool if the USA excelled at something we historically haven't been very good at. It'd still be a point of national pride for me even while not being a fan of the sport. I'm a big fan of the moon landings even though I don't know the first thing about aerospace engineering and don't care to.
So, that's my rationale. In the last half-decade, LSU has been undefeated and LSU has been very defeated. Neither moved my needle all that much. But winning the World Cup would be super cool, I think.

Viewership follows players. It still does better national numbers than MLB or NHL, but why national networks are bidding on contracts to show a Pistons-Cavaliers ECSF series is more about how we consume tv than anything. Numbers are down, but at least SOME people are watching it live, as opposed to anything else. But I see my kids, they don't have "their" team. They'll watch an NBA game if it's LeBron vs. Wembanyama or something, but they have no rooting interest. My oldest LOVES baseball, but he consumes it very differently from how I did.
