It's been weeks of unusually beautiful weather in Columbus. Mild, dry, just call us San Diego North. I'm about to take my daily walk on the waterfront, too. No cooking today - the wife is sending the kids to her parents and indicated very strongly that she expects to be Taken Out To Eat. Still haven't figured out where that will be, though with no OSU game I can relax and google restaurants.

high of about 90 here in NW Iowa - global warming
tee time at 10am
should be home by kickoff of the Husker game
pork chops are thawed but I have a party to attend about 6pm
will be food there. Hosted by a Hawkeye fan, I assume that game will be on somewhere
outdoor party with kegs and a band, big shindig!
If my Huskers upset Michigan my party might start early and I may need to stay at home and eat pork chops.

Dual soccer games at 10 this morning. I’m taking my daughter to her HS game. The wife is taking our son to his rec league game. Perfect fall morning here. Clear skies and in the mid 50s. Supposed to warm up to about 75 today.
I have a mountain of laundry to fold and put up later, but I’ll do that while watching football and sipping on something. WVU plays TCU at 8 tonight. I’m expecting a loss, but a win would be huge.
-
Great thread title.
An afternoon volleyball today which is rare for our league. Time of year where I have kids out because of tryouts for club teams and basketball.
Then heading to Bloomington for Nebraska @IU volleyball match. Tickets $5 compared to last night in West Lafayette where it cost $100+ to get in the door for N at Purdue.
Will be relying on radio quite a bit today for football. Glad Brewers wrapped up division already so I can relax and enjoy events today w my kids.

Badgers don't play, but probably not a boat day with the forecast calling for a lot of rain.
Italian Beef is on the docket for dinner tonight.

let's hope someone comes back down to earth this afternoon

A quick 9 holes on the docket this morning at the local pitch & putt, as a warmup/practice for my round tomorrow as I haven't played in a few weeks. Been trying to hit the range a ton since my last lesson, and feeling good about how I'm hitting it in general, but nothing replaces a little on-course time.
Then off to a matinee at the theater to see Les Miserables. My wife has seen it once before but I have not, so it should be fun. And by "fun" I mean I do know that it's not exactly a happy show lol... It won't be like when we saw The Book of Mormon a few weeks ago...
Steak night for dinner. I got a gorgeous 1.5# ribeye for me and 9 oz filet for her from our nice butcher shop, with some sauteed mushrooms, a wedge salad, and an excuse to open a really nice bottle of red.

It stormed all night here in MSP. Turns out that a house built in 1993 has considerably more flexibility than one built in 1948. Our house was shaking like dice on a Vegas crap table every time there was a blast of thunder.
11AM games are hard enough to get going for. It's even harder when one hasn't slept.
Very humid day here in the Cities. Dew points in the 60s and highs in the mid 80s.
Organizers of tomorrow's Twin Cities Marathon are advising to not start if you're not acclimated to running in high heat.

Mertz being #3 is shocking considering how bad he’s been in previous years.
Sheduer at #5 is insanely impressive considering Colorado has zero running game to speak of, a horrible OL, and Sheduer throws the ball like 50 times a game.

Keep that in Florida.
Word out of Bierman is that Darius Taylor is out.

I'm sure it does, compared to living in Satan's Sauna Florida...

847 stated he'd do well, we'll see moving forward

Well, still better than living in crime infested, toxic air, homeless capital of the USA, LBGTQARETARD+, COVID Nazi central Shithole California.
-
I would be retired in California except for the income taxes and high property costs. The latter can be moderated somewhat by choosing the location assiduously. I liked the area 2 hours east of SF and about 3 hours north. My wife however prefers a more urban environment.

Badgers don't play, but probably not a boat day with the forecast calling for a lot of rain.
You definitely don't want boats to get wet. :111:

Standard late September day here, kickoff temp will be 89 or so with a high of 92. Football weather!
Today is my daughter's 16th birthday so we're throwing her a surprise party with a few of her closest friends. Swimming in the pool, and then tonight I'll set up the blowup outdoor movie screen and projector, and they can watch a movie from the pool or deck.
Food for that is a taco and nacho bar, I've already made the ground beef taco meat and the carnitas, but the carne asada and pollo asado will hit the grill this afternoon.
May all your teams win, unless you root for Kansas.

I kept trying to say he was pretty good if you remember.
Coaching matters and got no favors in Madison.
Now... Imagine JJ's numbers if he was playing for Ryan Day.
SCARY!!

It's more about the lightning that comes with the storms. Don't want that, unless I'm following a sailboat.
-
I'm sure it does, compared to living in Satan's Sauna Florida...
Talk to me from November through April. They can keep the Santa snow up yonder.
-
The Gophers can absolutely lose this game.
Another factor: due to all the lightning in the Twin Cities last night, anyone that has connections to high school football isn't here. Most restarts were at 10 or 11 this morning.
-

Perhaps I've been accustomed to the frozen north too long. But I'll take it over heat/humity/hurricanes - not that there's anything wrong with that

The heat doesn't make your lips and fingers fall off. We're mostly used it now, but there are some days... wow you just drip.
But that happens up North too.
We've been here for 3 winters. Maybe we've ran the heat for 10 days total? Maybe?
And yes, hurricanes suck donkey balls.

There are so few people here that I have a good data signal in the stadium.
-
This is gonna be a looooong day.
-
The special teams coach needs to be sacked at halftime.
-
I saw Barnum whining about the lack of MIL this week. He's got one foot out the door.
-
Remember how I said that the Gophers needed to be absolutely dead last in the Big Ten power rankings. Nothing they've shown me has convinced me otherwise.
-
If you want to get yardage on Florida's defense, just do a baby juke inside and we'll roll out the red carpet to let you go outside and get all the yards you want.
Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
-

Post a stadium/field picture Gopher!
As for myself, am laying low today. First weekend of the season where I don't have a game to go to.
In the spirit of my recent trip to Texas, and making it to both a Longhorns and Aggies home game, I'm starting out my Saturday with Texas A&M Vs Arkansas. Two minutes into the 2nd Q, A&M leads 7-6.
Next event will be Texas Vs Kansas. The Longhorns Alumni group here in San Diego has invited me to their watch party at a sports bar down the street. Right now a frozen breakfast pizza is heating in the oven.
-

He ain't wrong about NIL. The money in this town would rather be the 2nd under assistant West Coast promotion sponsor for the Vikings than even associate with anything at the University.
However, where's he going? The only jobs coming open this year are horizontal transfers at best.
-
Breaking news: Caleb Williams is still ridiculous. And Colorado’s defense still sucks.
Hopefully after USC completes the murder of Colorado we’ll stop hearing about them and coach prime 24/7….hopefully.

I'm sure his agent has reached out to MSU.
All he will get is a horizontal transfer, at best. He's in year 7 and this is the program he's built? Add to that all of the clownish crap. Maybe WMU would take him back. Maybe?
No major program will take him unless he loses the clown show act.

One wildcat, Ray Davis, has 190 yards rushing, and just scored again

Penn st has struggled to run ball all season.

Whoever calls the plays (both sides) for Florida really sucks.

Gators look awful

UK is 4-10 passing with no big plays and kicking our ass 23-0.

Oh, Florida with a dropped pick-6. We're on fire today. What is the point?

10-10 at the Half.
Penn State and Texas A&M are each others equivalents. Prime recruiting and rosters loaded with talent. Name coaching too - A&M has Bobby Petrino at OC and DJ Durkin at DC. Yet routinely playing down to the competition and playing flatfooted for large stretches of games against inferior competition.
Texas A&M stretched their lead Vs Arkansas to 17-6 right before the half, but before that, even with the Aggies moving the ball well and QB Max Johnson on target (13/17 169yds 2tds), Texas A&M stalls their drives out in scoring range. Should be up by about 10 more points.
-
If college measured sack yardage, I'd already have next week's Resident Genius question.

5 STARZ #1 CB recruit in the country.
So much for talent.

Arky is better than NU in my mind. PSU is a 27 point favorite. They will need to win 37-10 to cover.
Not too many fans in the stands in Evanston. Some HS's in Texas and Florida had more last night.

Penn State and Texas A&M are each others equivalents.
it's like people never learn....James Franklin is the head coach at Penn State. He's going to find ways to screw things up in games. It's just what he does.

That was the first stop by the Gopher D all day.

30-7 KY going in dry
Lions up 20-10 on NU
-
Refs completely missed Kentucky jumping in the neutral zone that caused UF to false start. Not sure how they missed that.
-
I am starting to suspect that some of the shine has been knocked off of Colorado.
-
The Northwestern game got noncompetitive as soon as I turned to it.
-
This will be Kentucky's third straight over the Gators; four of the last six.
-
UK has 60ish passing yards and 33 points.
They've had more energy than us from the first play of the game. Napier can't win road games.
-
Colorado not dead yet
-
Colorado still not dead but running a lot of clock for being down 14
-
But now down 7, onsides kick coming
-
Deion using his timeouts early might kill him here.

Awesome catch by Roman Wilson for UM to go up 7-0

Nebraska got posterized.

Colorado making that close late will do a lot to make sure Joel Klatt can plug next week's Colorado game as the GAME OF THE YEAR!

I wonder if there has been a rule change? I saw it in the OSU ND game too. Defender ran into the neutral zone Offensive player moved, offsides gets called.

Maybe. I might have missed it.

Is Daniels out for Kansas?
-
Kansas gets a pick at the end of the half to avoid going down 2 scores. 13-7 Texas at the half.
-
Aranda's days at Baylor could be numbered.
-
Just got home. Felt very hot at the New Brickhouse. Crowd wasn't at all interested. Very strange.
This Gopher team is going to get hammered by Michigan next week.
Dough is going for Detroit pizza, so at least we'll eat well tonight.
-
Auburn gets a turnover and turns it into a TD to go up 17-10 early 2nd half over UGA.

funny thing is that he has stopped the RTB Ski U Mah go Gophers after his on field interviews maybe his agent has recommended that so that he could get a job somewhere else
-
This Auburn-Dawgs game checks the boxes, tied at 20 with 4:18 to go
-
Bowers a one man show for Georgia this afternoon. 157 yds receiving with the TD to put the Bulldogs over the top late Vs Auburn. Time and time again he’s bailed out a sandbagged Georgia offense with big 3rd down catches.
-
Yup
-
Baylor comes back from 28 down to beat UCF. Outscored em 26-0 in the 4th quarter.

LSU and Ole Miss are twelving, 31-28 before the half.

I’ve never seen so many talking heads so impressed with a team ALMOST erasing a big lead as they have been with Colorado today.

I’ve never seen so many talking heads so impressed with a team ALMOST erasing a big lead as they have been with Colorado today.
The CU thing is dumb. And it isn't Deion's blame. It's the media's. A bunch of talking heads trying to conjure a hype train to wrangle in some half-fans and 3 more online clicks.
I don't see how anyone could hate "Coach Prime" and love Donald Trump. They're using the exact same playbook. Shove a stick into the anthill, then watch the ants scramble around.
-
GT lost to Bowling Green.
Put the black unis back in the closet.
-
Did Cade McNamara just blow his knee?
-
And LSU just got a TD upheld on review that had no business being upheld. The beer cans are flying in.

GT lost to Bowling Green.
Ay Ziggy Zoomba

Ole Miss holds on.
And for the life of me I can't figure out why you wear a suit and tie to a football game.

This does not make Ohio State's close win over ND look good.
-
Ole Miss holds on.
And for the life of me I can't figure out why you wear a suit and tie to a football game.
But the bonus is the girls dress up, too. Loved that about UGA girls at the WLOCP.
Gator girls wear tiny shorts and bikini tops. Sigh.
-
ND did to Duke what OSU did to ND
-
Very classy move by a large amount of the Ole Miss team. LSU receiver hurt on the last play and laying on the ground as the fans start rushing the field, a ton of ole miss players run to surround him and protect him as he’s down. They do it instead of immediately celebrating a big win. Great to see.

Iowa once again pulls out a victory using defense and special teams.
Iowa had 26 points while only having 160 yards passing and 60 yards rushing on offense.
Iowa is behind 16-13 in 4Q, then MSU punter, who was having a good night, shanks a punt, giving Iowa the ball in FG range. Iowa kicks a FG to tie. Then MSU punts again and Iowa returns the punt for a TD. Then MSU fumbles and Iowa kicks another FG.
Essentially the Iowa offense did nothing but Iowa scored 13 points in 4Q to win.
-
That's what scares me about the Gophers trip to Mordor: the Gopher kicking game may be the worst in the country.
-
WVU is somehow 4-1. I’ll take it.
-
My 28-year old daughter texted me from the Iowa game. She's fairly, or more accurately, unfairly dramatic most of the time. "A fight almost broke out between us over 'fire Brian'" which chant could be heard on television. I don't know what side she was on - whether supportive of the chant, or opposed to it.

Duke was ranked 17,no.13 LSU lost to 20 Ole Miss so,meh
-
UGA minus Brock Bowers is 9-3 or so ...
-
Browers should be in NYC collecting hardware this year, but he won't. It'll be all QB's.
The announcing crew even brought that up.
-
As a consolation prize, he'll be signing some contract in a few months.
I've heard him called a unicorn, for some reason.
-
Lots of twelving around the county yesterday.
Looks like the SEC is ready for Texas and OU to come in.

That's a good win, at TCU.
Look what it did for Colorado...

I would have guessed LA, which is close.
HS football is pretty big around here, not Texas big, but big, and attracts the top athletes of course.

Yes Duke was #17 . . .
And we only looked slightly better against ND than they did.

Apples and oranges.
Ohio State beat Notre Dame on a Saturday night game in the most electric home atmosphere Notre Dame has had in years.
Duke could not do that in the same exact atmosphere working in their favor, and may be the most electric Saturday night atmosphere Duke has ever had for a football game

I get that they were ranked and ND was on the road. I don't believe for one second right now tOSU is one of the top 5 teams. The dawgs play like yesterday it could be their oyster again = number one, I'd put Texas as two,Seminoles at 3, Michigan at 4,Washington at 5,tOSU 6th

Washington did not look great against a not-good Arizona team.

I think this year's UGA team would lose to last year's UGA, OSU, UM, Bama, USC, and probably Vandy too.

We don't go to church. We worship inside our walls. Population 2.

True and I'll add that it is entirely possible that ND played well against tOSU and poorly against Duke.
OTOH, the opposite is also a possibility.
We'll find out.

Very fair statement. Both games could have gone either way on one play. My opinion of OSU skyrocketed last week, most specifically because of their defensive line and pressure. After seeing Duke put tons of pressure Hartman, I’m wondering if Duke also has a great D-line or my opinion of the OSU defensive line wasn’t quite accurate.

transitive property is useless.
I think it's better than completely useless, but obviously it can be misleading. If Team A trounces B and C and D and Team Z barely edges the same, it probably means something.

I think it's better than completely useless, but obviously it can be misleading. If Team A trounces B and C and D and Team Z barely edges the same, it probably means something.
The more common opponents two teams play the more I think you can read a little something into it.

His agent reached out in 2020, and was told no thank you. Not sure his profile has increased since then
-
That's kinda what I wrote.
-
So, have you seen a team this year you watched and thought "Hey, they look really good" for more than a game?
-
I think it's better than completely useless, but obviously it can be misleading. If Team A trounces B and C and D and Team Z barely edges the same, it probably means something.
Agreed, specifically:
The more common opponents two teams play the more I think you can read a little something into it.
I've long said that the problem with the transitive property is not that the theory is bunk, it is that people try to use it with insufficient data.
The most recent obvious example in the B1G was MSU's 2021 win over Michigan. MSU beat Michigan by four and that same MSU team lost to Purdue by 11 and to Ohio State by 49 in a game that wasn't even that close. Thus Purdue and Ohio State were better than Michigan, right? Well, no. Michigan didn't play Purdue but would have throttled them and beat tOSU by 15.
What happened?
The first thing we need to acknowledge, IMHO, is that no team plays the same every week. Teams have great games, good games, average games, below average games, and bad games.
MSU had a great game against Michigan and Michigan had *MAYBE* an average game. That is why I said above that we don't know yet how well tOSU, ND, and Duke played in their games against each other. If:
- tOSU played average or worse against ND, and
- ND played great against tOSU, and
- ND played average or worse against Duke, and
- Duke played great against ND
Then I feel really good about this year's tOSU team.
OTOH, if:
- tOSU played great against ND, and
- ND played average or worse against tOSU, and
- ND played great against Duke, and
- Duke played average or worse against ND
Then Ohio State is terrible this year.
-
We all use syllogism, and so do the rankers and odds setters, it's necessary, but not sufficient. Upsets happen (duh). They mean something, close wins mean something too.
UGA nearly lost to Auburn, it was 50-50 or so for a while. That would have dropped them from 1st to maybe 12th or so. Same team, ball tipped a different way, major shift in perceptions.
This also highlights a problem with a soft schedule, had UGA lost, they don't have much left to regain #1 status. If they won out and made the playoffs, fine, but they'd likely not be a one seed (to the extent that matters).
-
So, have you seen a team this year you watched and thought "Hey, they look really good" for more than a game?
I haven't seen Georgia or tOSU play yet.
I've seen Michigan, FSU, USC, and of course Texas play, multiple times each. None of them look like world beaters that's for sure, but all of them have plenty of talent and potential.
I really do want to catch the Bulldogs and Buckeyes though, probably not this weekend since I'll be at the State Fair.
-
FSU has looked pretty solid at times, as has Texas (headed to 15-0 perhaps). At this point, I think the top teams are all pretty good, but not elite.
-
Michigan top 3-5 of these net success rates every single week. Yes Nebraska, you really got beat that bad.

So you're telling me to lay the 21 on Michigan on Saturday.
-
I don't think it's gonna be too pretty.
-
Net points per drive - which removes garbage time and only counts FBS vs FBS.
Michigan #1 overall (#5 O and #1 D).
Maryland 6th, Ohio State 12th, Penn State 13th.

Eh, it still counts games against shit FBS teams, so I don't find it particularly interesting. Cross-reference that with some sort of power index that takes into account quality of opponent, and then it might mean something.

I'm not sure uf they use it to do a ranking but the College Football Nerds use a model that compares yards per play to the opponent's average.
Ie, if Ohio State and Michigan both rush for six yards per carry but tOSU does it against a team that usually allows eight that is bad while if Michigan does it against a team that usually allows three that is good.
I'm not sure about everything in their model but I like the methodology at least in theory.

Yeah I like that methodology.
I also like how you very politically selected your example to show tOSU as the one that did poorly, and Michigan as the one doing well.
Or, are you just being sneaky and trying to lull the Wolverine fans into a false sense of security? You sneaky bastage!

Few fan bases are as paranoid as Michigan's. There's no security when it comes to football.

LoL, it was just "political", using an example that looks bad for my team seems better.
I was watching them last night and one thing they said about Michigan was that on the defensive side their model may underrate Michigan.
Defensively their model compares the yards per play rushing and passing that a given team allowed to that opponent's average yards per play rushing and passing. They mentioned, however, that if your opponent is only averaging say 3 yards per rush, it becomes *REALLY* difficult to beat that by much.

:67: Don't you have some Sooners/Aggies or Apple products to troll?

Yeah I think we have some kind of game this weekend against some annoying team that wears a shade of red. Don't recall who, I'm sure it's not a big deal.

Yes, especially nowadays.
Only the very best run defenses in a given year are below 3.0 for the season.
I set the bar at 2.8 ypc allowed to get the highest run D rating in Whoa Nellie, and there have been recent seasons in which only 1 team in the nation did that well.
There hasn't been any seasons where no one has, though. I'm glad about that.
