Slowly rolling into Saturday after a couple days of too much food and too much drink. No point in cooking a lot today, the fridge is full of food and my wife is making breakfast when she gets home from work. We got a pair of kittens yesterday, so now we are up to two parents, three kids, and four furry creatures. To say I'll be tuning them out today is an understatement.
-
I was up too early, woke and was just awake. Back when I was working this never happened. I'm going to read a bit and see if that turns into a nap, but I just had coffee.
Weather here is nice again, should be able to go to the park and run. I had some thought of going to the game, I could walk, but the cheapest tickets on line were nearly $100. I'll be lazy and watch on the "tube". Does anyone have a tube TV any more. Folks I knew who kept them too long found they could not even donate them anywhere.
That was a huge innovation. I was looking at the OLEDs in Costco the other day and dreaming. Technology is great, usually. I have almost no idea how these things work. I understood at least the basics of how tube TV worked. Now the TV cameras are also tiny.
And the cameras on the new cell phones are astounding. But I digress.
My guesses for the day:
Ohio State 34 Michigan 17
Wisconsin 26 Minnesota 20
Clemson 48 USCe 13
Auburn 23 Alabama 20
LSU 37 A&M 27
UGA 40 Tech 16
Utah 42 Colorado 16
OSU 34 OU 31

I look at those super expensive televisions and then I see the 50 inch that's like 250 bucks and always get that.

This is a 70 inch, just LED but 4K, for $600. That amazes me. The OLEDs are about a grand higher than that.

It really is amazing. I’m finally replacing my 52” LCD in my great room. It was the first large item I bought myself when I got my first job out of college and it’s lasted me 15 years. I’ve been fighting getting something new but it’s so far behind technologically that it was time for an upgrade. Fell in love with the 75” LED and I figured if I’m going to replace the old one, I’ll try getting one that might last another 15 years.
my parents still have a tube tv in their basement. They refuse to get rid of it or possibly they can’t find anyone to carry it upstairs.

Clark Howard is a Consumer advocate down in CDs neck of the woods.Anyway he recommends the cheapest ones you can grab.Lot of the same TV's come in different packages but the guts are the same
Oh and BTW
Ann Arbor is a WHORE

Beautiful morning here at the East River Flats nee Hoth system. 32, snow/sleet/ ice pellets, and a stiff wind.
Impressed that the turnout is still big. The spaces were nearly full when I got here at 730.

Well I'm off to the corner pub to take the the game in with the usual suspects. We'll be quaffing tankards of frothy goodness with distressing frequency .Maybe toss back a few shots of Old Walmart.Anyway, enjoy the Games and I just might check in later. And if I do please disregard anything I may be babbling about. As always GO BUCKEYES!!!
-
Have fun Mr. N. I can't wish you good luck because I hope your team loses, but I don't suspect the Buckeyes will need any luck to win this game anyway.
-
Tree gets delivered within the hr. Kids fighting over who puts up what and where. Ho ho ho.

Sitting in buffalo wild wings in Phoenix. Had to get here at 8am my time to get a place at this buckeye bar. The wait is over let's get THE GAME started

On sadder news, Terrelle Pryor was stabbed last night and in critical condition.
-
Out here in PHX (Sun Lakes) for the weekend. Was wanting to meet up with some of the peeps from here, but the idea of me leaving for the day to watch football went over like a lead balloon with the in-laws. So, here I will stay.

You should go crash Badge's watch party :57:
-
I'm loving watching Urbs and Woodson razz each other. Really leaning into it
-
On sadder news, Terrelle Pryor was stabbed last night and in critical condition.
Geesh, had not seen that.
-
Up at my brother’s place to watch Ohio State-Michigan. Dad in town. Tons of rain last two weeks in Southern California.
-
Put up the Christmas stuff yesterday. Got in my workout and just ate a turkey and dressing sandwich. One kid is spending the day at a friend’s house. The wife is taking the other to a birthday party. I’m goin to be parked on the couch all day watching football. Perfectly content.
-
Great play design on that sweep by Michigan. Buckeye LBs still asleep.
-
Impressive drive for wolverines, then they shank the XP
-
Impressive drive for wolverines, then they shank the XP
Quinn Nordin gonna Quinn Nordin. This kid has to be the biggest dipshit kicker I've ever seen. Harbaugh has to be thinking, I had a pajama party for this guy? Wtf.
-
told ya Giles Jackson needed more play. Mike Sainistril needs more play too.
-
What a break on that fumble. Right back to him. Never broke stride.
-
What a break on that fumble. Right back to him. Never broke stride.
gotta be shitting me. Not a good sign for Michigan when breaks like that are going the Bucks way.
-
Mike Dwumfour basically just got tackled by the OL. No hold call there?
-
Well we can call that the JK Dobbins drive
-
How the F$!$% do you give up 28 yards on a 3rd and 14? Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Don Brown should go f#!# himself. That was pathetic.
-
JK has 79 yards on that 75 yard drive
-
Jake Fromm off to an 0-4 start against Ga Tech. Visibly frustrated. Dawgs up 3-0 early.
-
Disjointed looking run for Michigan there.
-
Mike Dwumfour basically just got tackled by the OL. No hold call there?
Saw that too - he was held in the backfield on two separate points of contact by the same blocker.
-
Fields very inaccurate to start the game. Unusual for him
-
Probably PI there.
-
And again there.
-
Unreal. That’s PI twice in two plays. As if OsU needs the help
-
Just got back to the Flats after Game Day. The last time there were that many people on Northrop Mall were protests against the Vietnam War. Great atmosphere up there.
And everyone picked the good guys to win!

UM 0-3 throwing at Okudah
-
Wonder if Ohio St will come after a punt today. The kid from Michigan looks to be taking his time getting that ball out of there.
-
IU and PU playing a noon night game today.
-
UM 0-3 throwing at Okudah
Well if it’s officiated like that, it will be 0-15 today because he hit the receiver early and held the next ones arm down.
-
Olave!
-
Nice answer by Michigan
-
Great response from Michigan. Chase got held, but if it doesn't get called it didn't happen
-
Well they made up for it by no hold call
-
I'm not embracing the mustache renaissance. Too many poorly executed efforts.
-
There is so much red in Michigan stadium, wrapping all the way around.
-
OSU discombobulated in coverage with Wade not playing
-
They took his shoe off
-
We used to talk about stealing shoes as a figure of speech, as in taking away your mobility and self control.
-
Twice now that Ohio St has picked a huge chunk of yardage on short little crossing routes over the middle.
-
Both of these offenses are peak
-
Huge break for the Buckeyes
-
And another
-
Absolutely cannot happen. That’s basically two turnovers.
-
Eh, Michigan killing themselves.
-
Huge drive for UM here. Their offense has been awesome and they are down 15 and OSU gets the ball to start the second half
-
Even when Ohio State comes out flat you can’t afford to make mistakes against them. Michigan’s fumble + offsides on the punt has made this a completely different game favoring the Buckeyes.
-
Wow that's about as bad as it gets on screwing up the fundamentals.
-
Bucks need to change their look defensively
-
I'm still chuckling about Klatt thinking a gust of wind contributing to the Patterson fumble.
-
Just gotta tip your hat to those throws and catches
-
Illinois w 1 first down and 29 yards of offense in first half.
-
Excellent first half. Patterson is dealing, OSU needs to try and bother him in the second half
-
Being a Michigan fan is so frustrating. It’s like they’re so close to being great and yet they just can’t stop beating themselves.
-
Sitting in buffalo wild wings in Phoenix. Had to get here at 8am my time to get a place at this buckeye bar. The wait is over let's get THE GAME started
Where is the OSU Bdubs? The Florida one is way over East 101/Indian Bend.
-

Damn, you're way down south. When are you leaving Phx?
-
Being a Michigan fan is so frustrating. It’s like they’re so close to being great and yet they just can’t stop beating themselves.
It’s maddening. I think Ohio State is in Harbaugh’s head. Dude is never going to beat them. Ever. He might as well go back to the NFL.
-
Idiots.
-
This game is pretty simple, one team can run and the other can't.
-
This game is pretty simple, one team can run and the other can't.
Which is kinda insane being that it’s Harbaugh’s 5th year and the guy was known at Stanford and with the 49ers in the NFL as a guy who built dominant running teams.
-
Man Fields had a touchdown if he keeps there
-
Let's see if the defense came up with some ideas at halftime
-
Don Brown is a joke vs Ryan Day. Day has made Brown look like a clown every time the two have faced off. Pathetic.
-
Michigan just not making the plays you have to make to beat Ohio St. Bell drops the 3rd down pass. That punt should have been downed at the 2. Instead Ohio St gets it at the 20. Can’t have those mistakes.
-
Lol. That was a perfect kick, rolling sideways at the 4 and they drag it into the end zone. Can’t beat #1 when you beat yourself half the possessions.
-
Welp there goes the season
-
Welp. Nice start but it’s not about how you start it’s about how you finish. The route is on, and after ANOTHER a beat down at the hands of OSU, it’s really going to turn the heat up on Harbaugh.
He’s never in a million years beating Ohio State with Day, so he might as well just go back to the NFL. I’m calling it now- Harbs is going to be the next coach at either the Browns or the Cowgirls in 2020.
-
Hold your breath, Ohio St fans. Chris Chuganov is not the guy to play the role Cardale Jones did in 2014.
-
Where is the OSU Bdubs? The Florida one is way over East 101/Indian Bend.
Gilbert ave just north of ray in gilberf
-
Michigan’s DL is getting absolutely dominated at the point of attack vs the run. It’s embarrassing.
-
Wow I thought fields was done
-
Wow I thought fields was done
No, just Harbaugh. Although he never started.
-
Thinking DPJ might be coming back
-
Jfc
-
Once again we see the dumbest rule in sports. Makes no sense
-
UM WRs aren't doing Shea any favors.
-
Down 26 and you’re kicking a field goal? Lol. I mean, it’s like Ohio state has been playing chess the last 15 years while Michigan thought it was checkers.
-
Lousy slate of games right now.
-
Done with all my tile cutting and fitting prep. Wife is going to Costco and we'll mortar it in when she's back. Then we need to also get working on Christmas decorations.
Wife is making posole for dinner tonight. That's always delicious...
I suppose there's a football game on the TV right now involving my alma mater, but so far it's not looking great. Gonna take some magic to pull this out.
-
Down 26 and you’re kicking a field goal? Lol. I mean, it’s like Ohio state has been playing chess the last 15 years while Michigan thought it was checkers.
Harbaugh has been outclassed by Urban and now Day in every single way imaginable. It’s a joke. This isn’t a rivalry anymore. Hasn’t been for a decade and a half.
-
A couple more 3-and-outs by OSU, and they'll be twelving in the big game!
-
A touchdown turns into a punt, and Michigan had life. OSU will need a stop to get out of this
-
Huge play here
-
Finally stopped that play
-
Harbaugh's is an idiot
-
I think going for it was the right call but wow, no push at all.
-
IU Purdue ain't over
-
I think going for it was the right call but wow, no push at all.
Too much time in a 2 possession game that deep in your own territory
-
Harbaugh's is an idiot
He is but I also put that on Tarik Black. Absolutely no effort to fight for that first down. Dude extend your arm and fight for it. Just soft.
-
I don't see how that's targeting
-
Take that Joel Klatt
-
IU Purdue ain't over
Tied at 31. 2:48 remaining and IU gets the ball.
Need defense badly here.
-
Now this is the right call
-
Give us CHUGZ
-
Seriously though put in the backups
-
Can we stop with the human-interest crap? I don't need to think about abortions during the football game. FFS
-
Get a quick OT. Purdue needs a touchdown
-
Doesn't purdue have real lights now? ESPN camera exposure is messed up.
-
Holy shit
-
Total goat rodeo getting in. Been in line since 200 and have only moved 5 feet.
-
That was a good start
-
OT2 coming
-
Wow Bama made a FG at Auburn.
-
Total goat rodeo getting in. Been in line since 200 and have only moved 5 feet.
I work with a lady who uses that phrase all the time. You’re the only other person I’ve ever heard use it. Lol.
-
Harbaugh either has a Hoke-like one score game, or a RichRod-esque blowout loss. Nothing in between.
-
This is the story of our season. Get down to the 1, penalty, settle for FG. Get down to the 4, turnover on downs. Just leaving so many points out there. Outgained them 94-0, and +1 in TO. Score is 3-0
-
Can we stop with the human-interest crap? I don't need to think about abortions during the football game. FFS
They have to talk about Don Browns defense though.
-
Lol, 3 red zone possessions, 3 points.
-
Tanner Morgan really working the defense with his footwork. The 1st down conversion on 3rd & 15 is one of those back breaking plays.
-
Hoosiers pull it out
-
Lol, 3 red zone possessions, 3 points.
And then give up a bomb to fall behind. We deserve everything that happens to us.
-
And then give up a bomb to fall behind. We deserve everything that happens to us.
Both these teams showing exactly who they are.
The OL troubles have plagued them both.
-
O-H!
-
They took his shoe off
Literally! One guy held his leg and the other worked at untying his shoe and literally took his shoe off; like I would do my daughters if they fall asleep still wearing them.
As far as cheap/cheat plays go this is one of the funniest/benign ones I've seen.
-
Gophers w some injuries on d. The LB is a big miss.
-
This is like my whoa Nellie game last night. Couple quick turnovers. Some nice first halves across the country right now.
-
1 - converting a 4th down and then immediately fumbling the next play is hilarious
2 - has anyone seen that scheme before? When UW didn't get the 3rd and 1 before the QB sneak got it on 4th and 1, the replay showed the guard avoiding the DT who was to be blocked by the FB on a dive play. I have never seen that. Sure, there are schemes where you let the guy go upfield and take himself out of the play, but to ole the DT on purpose - playside - for the FB/upback to block seems odd to me. It blew up and didn't gain a yard.
-
Wind might be coming in Minnesota.
-
How did the Illini get tripled up by the Mildcats?
-
And what in the world is going on in Happy Valley?
-
A shootout in the Iron Bowl, as we all expected
-
Bama and Auburn are “Twelving” as OAM likes to say.
-
Saban hot. Rightfully so.
-
Wisconsin is Just Better.
2 Score lead by the Badgers. Snow swirling. I expect to see Badger Defense continue to stifle the run, and grind out a victory.

It is only one run, but maybe spoke too soon
-
fun watching the SEC refs doing what they can to insure Alabama wins
-
Uh, that's not fair. Bama was royally jobbed before half. Auburn gifted a fga.
-
Pick 6 again
-
Mac Jones throws his second pick 6 of the game. This one goes for 100 yards. Auburn takes the lead.

Wisconsin pouring it on

Wisconsin/Minny, Herbie/Fowler just announced it's OSU versus Wisconsin for the Big Ten Title. 9 minutes left in the game.
-
Should have been 4th down, but who cares.
-
It looks like Wisconsin has this one.
-
The B1G's consistency of changing the conditions of Pass Interference during a game is the greatest wonder in all of CFB.
-
a lot of contact and pulling of jerseys is allowed
not sure why
-
Bama and Auburn are “Twelving” as OAM likes to say.
News Flash: Both teams scoring 40 or more is now called "SEC-ing."
-
Uh, that's not fair. Bama was royally jobbed before half. Auburn gifted a fga.
By putting the second back on the clock? How jobbed?
-
That one felt good. Sorry Goophs. Maybe next year. Or, better yet, in 14 years.
-
a lot of contact and pulling of jerseys is allowed
not sure why
I would ask if Maryland did that a lot last week since I didn't see much of it, but I know better because of the score, and the fact that we don't cover anyone.
-
Bama and Auburn are “Twelving” as OAM likes to say.
Big time!
-
Well, that sucked.
I'll have more thoughts when I get home.
-
Alabama just made it on 4th. A punt would be deadly given the way this game is going.
-
Even if Alabama wins this though, I lean against them getting in the CFP bowls over 1 loss Big 12 champ or Utah (or even 1 loss Ohio State). I think they needed to win this convincingly for that move this year.
That said, this is an entertaining game.
-
Iron Bowl is insane.
-
Well, that sucked.
I'll have more thoughts when I get home.
Still a great year.
-
UPRIGHT!
-
Are you sh!tting me? 'bama has 12 on, to end the game.
-
Good. I didn’t want to see Bama part of the playoff picture.
-
Goodbye tide
-
Auburn wins 48-45. That was a wild one.
-
Damn, deprived of watching Waddell there.
-
NIce acting A&M
-
Lsu wants to put the hurt on the Aggies tonight.
-
That axe, ITS BACK IN THE RIGHT EFFIN PLACE!!!!
(Tomorrow I will go back to being mostly nice to this Minnesota team. Not today)
-
Also, Iron Bowl. Hell yes.
-
Lot of talent in the stands on the Plains.
-
Auburn wins 48-45. That was a wild one.
A lot of SECing going on in that game. (You know bad defense, mental mistakes, penalties etc.) 😈
-
Fabulous entertainment.
-
I think Utah/Oklahoma would be a really interesting discussion for the 4th playoff spot if it works out that way. I frankly think Utah/Baylor would be too but I’m not sure the committee would agree.
-
LSU is having its way with Texas A&M right now. 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter.
-
Utah wearing a 60s era uniform, looks like many eras of Ohio St.

I thought that too.

Congrats Auburn and especially Malzahn. Every week Auburn fans complain about Gus but what other current coach has three wins notched against Saban? Dabo?

Just the Mad Hatter.
-
Love how Utah calls themselves "The U"
Wonder if Miami's legal team has something to say about the New U
-
A lot of SECing going on in that game. (You know bad defense, mental mistakes, penalties etc.) 😈
Yup. The second game this year involving Alabama, where the losing team had 40+. That's definitely some fine SECing.
-
meanwhile........ ISU/KSU playing some defense
-
Still a great year.
Yup. If you'd have told me three months ago that the Gophers were in a position to play for the division and the Rose Bowl, I'd have told you that you were crazy.
Those of you who have known me for a while know that in the not-so-distant past, there was a time where I used to get seething hot angry after losing to the red weasels. REALLY mad. I knew that it was a football game, and fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But I was PISSED. That may have been the reason why last year's welcome-home party at Bierman Hall was so cathartic. 15 years of pent up frustration suddenly released. And that may have been the reason why I left the New Brickhouse tonight not feeling angry at all.
There's also just general age and perspective involved. The last time I nearly lost my cool over the outcome I was not in a good place in my life. I'm now 4 or 5 years older, have a wife and dog that think the world of me, and still will no matter the outcome of the game. Also, I thought that the Gophers were a year ahead of schedule, so I never let myself get too caught up in the hype.
I'm also going to be in Europe over the holiday break with the Mrs., and missing a bowl in Florida isn't a concern at all. Missing the Rose would have. /selfishreasons
-
And I just saw this. A healthy dose of perspective

What's the problem? I think it's fantastic.

What's the problem? I think it's fantastic.
Guess he doesn't like the shape of our state
-
It's way too big and looks fake and bad. Black? Was this hastily done this morning?
-
What's the problem? I think it's fantastic.
It would look better without the black Arizona silhouette behind the devil head, IMO.
Are these throwback unis, Froggy? Or has ASU gone back to the old unis for regular wear? Whichever, I like these better.
Arizona's jerseys are not a good color combo. The numerals should be white, or at least have white outlines around the red.
-

Nah, our field guy (who also works every Superbowl that involves a grass surface) did it on Monday.
-

I wouldn't call them "throwbacks" per se, it's just our more traditional color scheme (gold helmet, maroon jersey, gold pants) with the sparky on the helmet instead of the pitchfork (which was the standard helmet logo from the late 70s till 2010).
Uofa's uniform is supposed to be a throwback to their Dick Tomey days in the mid to late 90s, however. I think it's a better look than most of their more recent uni combos.

I like Sparky on the helmet rather than the trident/pitchfork. And I always like the use of school colors rather than bringing in black, gray, silver, etc. So I haven't liked what I've seen of ASU's unis in recent years. Go back to maroon and gold with Sparky on the helmet!
UofA's unis have looked bad ever since Mike Stoops became their HFC. They've tried various combos, but they've all been ugly. Was the Arizona "Desert Swarm" defense from the Tomey era? I think I remember what they looked like, and what I think I remember was better than those things they're wearing tonight.
Sorry your Frogs lost to WVU today. I have nothing against WVU, but a TCU victory would have been better for OU's resume in the eyes of the CFP Committee.
-
Yeah, ASU should keep that scheme and UofA should keep the white helmet with the A. But they won't, because kids nowadays like ugly color-on-color crap...just look at basketball shoes.
-
I get that Trevor Lawrence was a good FR and won the NC and all. But why haven't I heard a whisper from the media coverage about how good Travis Etienne is? Dude is averaging 8.1 ypc for his career! 8.7 this year! Not a peep.
1600+ yards last year.
1300+ so far this year.
I guess if Clemson let him tote it 350 times, he'd get a mention.
-
Yeah, ASU should keep that scheme and UofA should keep the white helmet with the A. But they won't, because kids nowadays like ugly color-on-color crap...just look at basketball shoes.
We are in an aesthetically challenged period. Ugly cars, ugly clothes, ugly advertising, and ugly sports uniforms.

I mean, he was seventh in Heisman voting last year. He’s received all sorts of coverage. But at times, there’s only so much bandwidthz
Clemson’s issue is several fold. First, the narrative about them focuses on schedule, playoff and occasional struggles against said schedule. Then comes the fact they have too many good players. Their to two receivers are insanely good. Their best defensive player leads them in sacks and plays a functional linebacker/nickel/occasionally safety spot. They have a generational talent at QB (more on the eye test guy than stats at the moment), and they have a back with silly speed who shares the backfield with a few other dudes.
The other, more interesting part is the RPOs. In an RPO offense, you always attack where the defense isn’t, and that means even an absurd back is reduced to more of a complementary piece. He hasn’t carried the ball more than 17 times this year. He’s been under 100 yards in five of 12 games.
He’s been reduced in a way, maybe a little more boom or bust, and the booms have been against Wofford, Ga. Tech and Louisville.
-
And I just saw this. A healthy dose of perspective
https://twitter.com/GopherHole/status/1200935715900510209?s=19
There are a few dicy moments with PJ, but I enjoyed that a lot. Even while gloating (me gloating to be clear), 10-2 is a hell of a thing for Minnesota. It’s a hell of a thing for Wisconsin, or Iowa, or even Michigan or Penn State or Florida or Auburn.
I don’t know his future there, but he got that team formidable quickly, and that’s impressive.
-
Yeah, Etienne is simply over shadowed by other top level teams playing top level opponents. Clemson demolished an opponent again, film at 11. Meanwhile, in real games ...
Clemson has a very very good team, but they lacked exposure this year because of schedule and being challenged. They will almost certainly demolish poor UVA in front of 35,000 fans and make the playoff. UVA then goes to the Orange Bowl, a great year for them as well (and they might upset an unmotivated UGA team).
-
BTW, Air Force has 10 wins. Navy 9, with a chance at 10 in two weeks. Army is 5-7, might go 5-8.
Unless it's Rutgers, the Big 10 has no option-able teams this year. Purdue and Illinois are traditionally those, but Ill is bowling (a return to what got Ron Zook fired!!!) and Purdue has a 17-21 coach with a $27.65 million buyout that they're happy with.
-
Ugg. Turned on the TV this morning ESPN was streaming and was treated to this gem; "Tennessee is by far the best 7-5 team in the nation....because SEC"
-
Tennessee is a very flawed team who beat no one with a pulse. Their 7-5 record could easily be 9-3, and they would still be a mediocre team, at best. Their OOC slate was horrible and they went 2-2.

Rutgers hired Schiano

Tell me again why Michigan hired Harbaugh and whether after five seasons that is considered a success, at all?
Beat Ohio State reasonably often.
Win the Big Ten reasonably often.
Make the playoffs on occasion.

Tennessee isn't the best 7-5 team in the SEC. Also, we are people that are good at finding the thing that irks us.
-

TTUN is much, much better with Harbaugh than they were before him.
Before Harbaugh they were 5-7 and missing Bowl games.
(With a bowl victory) Harbaugh will have them with double digit wins 4 of his 5 years.
Since the Bowl era Michigan has only missed 3 bowl games this was the 7 years before Harbaugh.
He will take his team to a 5th straight Bowl game, and with a win, another top 15 finish.
The problem for TTUN/Harbaugh is they are facing the historical best OSU teams, who had one of the best all time coaches (and his hand chosen successor.) Did they overpay for Harbaugh, I think so, but they have the resources.
-

It's not. And when they fire him, chances are they won't find someone who can't do that first thing, which means they can't do that second thing, which is mostly a precursor to the third thing.
By SRS, he's faced No. 2, 4, 3, 5 and 1 in the country. It's a fair question to ask, why has he reasonably not built top-5 teams that beat other top-5 often? But that's the question we're asking.
-
I will also add for TTUN (and the Rest of the B1G) is a concern I have with Day. He is on record (with the free agent era we are now in) of saying he is no longer going to chase top after the best Athletes (who if they don't play leave,) but going after the next level down kids who want to be Buckeyes (for Life.) If the Buckeyes no longer have the star advantage in recruiting, I think it becomes more realistic for the rest of the league to be able to compete against OSU. I'm hoping Day and company will be able to have Wisconsin level of Success in getting those 3 and 4 star guys and coaching them up. But I think the Alabama level of Success will not be achievable once Meyers recruits are gone.
-
I don't know what Day said specifically, but I expect OSU to continue to attract 5 and 4 star recruits far more than any other B1g team.
-
true
-
As for JH, I don't think they would find a better coach sitting around waiting by the phone, so they should keep him, but some rumblings should be heard.
FIckell might be sitting by a phone. Louisville has found a great hire I think. He may bolt for UNC when Brown retires.
-
Jim shouldn't be hammered for this season. Losing to this Buckeye team is expected
losing 2 road games to top 10 teams can be forgiven
yes, 3 losses isn't what the fans want, but those are 3 tough losses
-
I don't think he should be hammered, but this was THE YEAR for Michigan, except it wasn't. They failed to meet expectations, that always leads to problems for a coach, particularly if that is a trend. Michigan has high expectations and they are not being met, obviously. They can't do a "Minnesota" or "Baylor" because of those expectations.
SO, they either modify their expectations are continue to be disappointed, unless something significant happens. Do folks think they will be better next season?
The may well face Florida in a bowl game and a loss there ....
-
Love how Utah calls themselves "The U"
Wonder if Miami's legal team has something to say about the New U
Minnesota fans refer to their school as The U.
-
Husker fans aren't happy with Frost either
many had much higher expectations than I
some are hammering the coach and suggesting he's not the right guy
most folks think they will do better next season, but not better enough
perhaps next season Harbaugh gets PSU and Wiscy at home
it was THE YEAR for Jim somewhat because Urban was gone and the Bucks were breaking in a new QB
well, unfortunately for Jim, coaching and QB play didn't slip a bit
-
Yes, this was the year, because if it didn't happen this year, it's probably not happening any time soon.
The Madman would look fine coaching in the NFL.
-
The off-season is Harbaugh's time to shine.
The pundits will begin to pump them up, and by the time August rolls around they will be the consensus "best team" in the Big Ten just like every other off-season.
Only now Nebraska has emerged as their primary off-season adversary, as the "Top team" in the B1G West annually in the preseason.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
-
Minnesota fans refer to their school as The U.
Well...it's not on their helmets.

I believe in the years JH has been at UM, the Wolverines are 6th or 7th in the country in win %. You don't just dump that because your biggest rival happens to be top 3.
-
Tennessee isn't the best 7-5 team in the SEC. Also, we are people that are good at finding the thing that irks us.
Right, Tennessee isn't the best anything. Maybe the best team wearing daisy-orange, but that's it.
-
Makes more sense for Utah. They not only have a block U on their helmet, but the school, team name, and state begin with a "U"
-
I'd like to see Utah get in. New blood. Earned it - didn't just score 60 pts/gm on a quirk, they actually play defense and stuff.
-
Tennessee isn't the best 7-5 team in the SEC. Also, we are people that are good at finding the thing that irks us.
Heh! True.
But we are also people who are very good at finding the things that confirm what we already believe.
People! Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em!

Tom Osborne became the Huskers' HFC in 1973, the same year that Barry Switzer took the Sooners' helm.
In Osborne's first five seasons, he went 0-5 against Switzer. He won the '78 game only to have to meet OU again in the Orange Bowl. The Huskers lost that one and the next two.
So, after nine meetings between the two, Dr. Tom's record stood at 1-8. From that point forward, he went 4-4 against Switzer, and went on to accomplish other great things as well.
-
The difference between Harbaugh and Osbourne is that there is no Bob Devaney in Harbaugh's corner.
-
and the 70's were MUCH different than the 2010's
although Tom has told the story many times. He was told by a Regent after the 1976 Bluebonnet bowl, that if Osborne has lost that game, he would have been fired.
0-4 vs the Sooners at that time and 9-3-1 in 76 with the bowl victory
OFFICIAL RECAP of the 76 Bluebonnet
Two back-to-back third-quarter touchdowns moved Nebraska from a 24-14 deficit to a 27-24 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the 1976 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl.
Those two TDs came on an 18-yard run by Rick Berns and a 23-yard Vince Ferragamo-to-Chuck Malito pass. The touchdown pass was set up by a partially blocked Texas Tech punt by Kent Smith and Ted Harvey.
With Nebraska ahead by 27-24 entering the fourth quarter, the game was far from over. Twice before in '76 - against Missouri and Oklahoma - the Huskers saw fourth-quarter leads vanish. But the third time was the charm for Nebraska.

I'll ask again next season when Harbaugh is going to feel some heat from folks who count at UM.
-
Michigan with Harbaugh has a much higher floor than Michigan without Harbaugh.
With Harbaugh they are good for 8 to 10 wins per season, even when things seem to be going completely off the rails.
Without Harbaugh they can range anywhere from 3 to 11 wins per season, where they only crack the 8 win barrier periodically; mostly hoovering in that 5 to 7 win range.
-
They had a whole, big convo on UM and its issues on the Ocho yesterday. They were ridiculous, saying they hadn't had an outright NC in 70 years, one guy chimed in with 'they have the recent history of Wake Forest', etc. It was absurd and obnoxious, etc - garbage TV.
But a point was made that it's not UM, it's not Harbaugh, but the fans who are the problem. They have delusional expectations. I think that's fair.
Michigan is a name program - a helmet, a blue-blood, all of that. But it does have a lack of "color TV" elite success, does it not? Now, I'm not going to sit here and belittle 1997 - that was a legit NC team. I have no idea why anyone would consider it less-than. But yeah, since before my dad was born, UM has 1 NC. That's still paltry for a top-tier helmet program.
So I looked up records for my lifetime - since 1980, and UM is 9th in winning %. That's really good. But there are problems with it, too. OSU is 1st in that time frame. Everyone above them and to 2 spots below them have multiple NCs since 1980, except for Georgia. And if Michigan fans has the same expectations of UGA fans, there wouldn't be a big issue here. But.....they don't. Their mindset is - elite helmet - most wins - best fight song...but the peaks are missing.
Michigan and Georgia are similar programs, unless you're a college football historian. You'd need a leather helmet collection to differentiate the two. But their fanbases are light-years apart, and yes, even with UGA running Richt off, I stand by it.
UM fans think they're an (here in 2019) Alabama or a USC or an Oklahoma...and they're really, objectively not. You could argue whether or not they SHOULD be - but that's irrelevant. I'm talking about what IS.
Anyway, here's the top 11 since I was born:
1 - OSU
2 - FSU
3 - Nebraska
4 - OU
5 - Miami
6 - Florida
7 - Georgia
8 - Alabama
9 - Michigan
10 - Penn St
11 - Clemson
-
I used to know what the term "fan" was short for ...
That makes me crazy.

Last conference championship:
1. 2018
2. 2014
3. 1999 (B12)
4. 2018
5. 2003 (BE)
6. 2008
7. 2017
8. 2018
9. 2004
10. 2016
11. 2018
I still find it humorous that the ACC still has FSU and Miami in separate divisions, so they can play in the CCG every year.
-
Are you saying FSU and Miami are NOT in the CG this year as usual? Huh. Is the ACC still playing football?
-
What's even more funny is that GT won an ACC title in 2009, but the NCAA vacated it. So GT and Miami have the same number of ACC Championships, since Miami joined.
Zero.
-
I would not have expected FSU to fall this far this long, Miami maybe somewhat. The ACC is a mess of a football conference these days.
-
FSU is going to suck for a long time.
-
Promise?
-
Can't promise, but take a hard look at the program. There is no direction, and they've done a lot of stupid things lately.
-
Like everywhere, FSU needs a solid HC, maybe a superb HC, and time to change things.
And were I a superb HC, I would not go there for a million dollars. Or more.
-
For a million bucks my bags are packed, but of course I'd tell them you're not low balling me at that price
-
For a million bucks my bags are packed, but of course I'd tell them you're not low balling me at that price
Heck yeah, I'd go for a million bucks, especially if I could get a buy out provision.
However, there was another part to my equation.

I'm to the part where he is coaching the misfits at East Dillon HS. I like the plot lines. I watched it so long ago I forgot what happens, though it's pretty easy to guess.
The guy two lockers down from me last year at fantasy camp is a head referee for the Pac. He had some interesting comments, nice fellow, he called the Cincy-UCLA game this year. I would have asked him more questions, but to the other side was a former Atlanta Falcon, who at 45 is still an incredible athlete even at Baseball. He played football and basketball in college and turned down P5 offers to go where his brother was playing. He was FCS player of the year one year. Brian Finneran.
He played center field on our team and ran like crazy.

I liked the first season, but couldn't watch it once they hit the homicide/cover-up plot line, and the Mexican shark cure plot line. Way too soap opera for me and I checked out.
For those that have never read the book, though, definitely do. It's quite good.

Season 3 is better than 2, I think, which is rare. I agree the murder thing was bizarre and contrived.

Yeah, Season 2 is bad, but I enjoyed the rest

Our local high school is playing for their first ever state championship tomorrow. Took my son to the WPIAL (Western PA) championship a couple weeks ago. They won WPIALs once before, back in the 50s, but for a long time, when Western PA was perhaps the mecca of football, teams just played for that WPIAL title, and only (relatively) recently (I think the 80s), had their winner advance into the state playoffs at the semis. So the WPIAL final is really the de facto quarterfinal.
-
That's cool, I really enjoy going to high school football games and try to make a couple per year.
My local high school has won State in 3 of the past 8 years and played in the finals 2 others. This is a suburb of Austin called Cedar Park, but it's definitely way more small-town than big-city feel in this place, and the entire town really gets behind the team. The band and cheerleaders have also won state several times in recent years. It's really fun how the community all rallies around the kids, a very neighborly feel.
To prove I'm not trying to show you up, Cedar Park High actually just got knocked out in the quarterfinals this year, and also my alma mater in Austin typically goes 3-7 and 2-8 on an annual basis, so no big head here. ;)
-
just a big hat
-
I own a couple of those.
And no cattle.
So I guess the saying is true. :)
I also own 7 pair of cowboy boots, but in my defense I only purchased 2 pair myself. 2 were gifts, and I inherited 3 pair when my grandfather passed.

Is the plural of "pair" also "pair"? Seems like it is in poker, but what about real life? Maybe just in the case of cowboy boots?
The HS where I teach is playing in the state football championship game tonight as seems to be the case with yours and ELA's. We have won a lot of those games over the past decade. And our band and cheerleaders can say the same.
-
I like that saying, especially with my French "cousins", who have no clue what it means.

I like that saying, especially with my French "cousins", who have no clue what it means.
My boss is French, born and lived there until he was about 15. He moved to California and lived there for many years, but most recently has moved to Texas for about the past ten. He wears cowboy boots every single day, which is a lot more often than I do, and he recently traded in his Cooper Mini for a Ford F250 diesel "Texas Edition." Suffice to say, he loves it here and is fully bought-in.
I haven't seen him wear a cowboy hat though.

Arizona has combated some dominance at the top (4A, 5A, 6A) this year by creating an "open division" playoff of the top 8 teams from those classifications.
So you've got only the elite programs all playing for a sort of true, overall championship. If they did something like that in FL, you'd get 50,000 people, lol.
.
Stupidly, the championship game is on Saturday at 4pm. FFS
.
The one game I did go to this year was a local HS, between two 0-8 teams. It was hard to watch.
-
I'm on first name basis with at least one referee on each of the Prep Bowl crews that worked this past weekend. Does that count?
-
My HS won its 2nd consecutive state title in WI this past month at Division 1. Wing T offense. Interestingly, the county had 4 of 7 state champs this year.
Trivia: JJ Watt and bros. are from this county and yours truly was a prosecutor there briefly. Good football. I don't remember charging too many cases from his neck of the woods. We didn't sniff the state title when I wore the uniform but it wasn't because of any bad long snaps, I promise you that.

PA split from 4 classes to 6 which helped ease the top which had become dominated by a few giant schools. They also instituted a rule where for each X number of transfers you took that didn't start 9th grade at the school, you had to move up a class. That was preventing the small private schools from basically being all star teams
-
I always think about starting a HS football thread, but I don't just want it to turn into people bragging about their team's recruits' performances.

I always think about starting a HS football thread, but I don't just want it to turn into people bragging about their team's recruits' performances.
Yeah, I'd head for the exits post haste if that happened.
-
I was watching a local game on TV recently and can't get over the $ these schools put into the unis and every kid is outfitted w fancy gloves, and equip, medical tents etc. They obviously have gotten wise to the sponsorship and marketing opportunities but there's something kind of unseemly watching some of these efforts to package the event like a MNF game.
...in my day if you wanted a giant neck roll...
For the record by my junior year I stopped wearing thigh, hip and knee pads. I fashioned a little hip pad which was basically excess material stitched to the girdle to avoid detection and somehow nobody noticed. It cramped my stance for long snapping I felt. I remember one kid finally noticed during a game, he was like Where are your pads...that's cool.
-
I always think about starting a HS football thread, but I don't just want it to turn into people bragging about their team's recruits' performances.
So make both
1 - HS football
2 - Uncle Rico's "my HS is the best because..."
One of the threads will fade away in no time.

I officiated a game with Saguaro (who is in the open division championship game) earlier this season when the played the #2 team (at that time) in their division. It wasn't even close they blew them totally out. It was a great idea for the AIA to create the open division. It is also good to see some other teams actually have a chance to do well in the post-season.
-
UW has a player from Saguaro. Used to have two (brothers) but the QB transferred. The other one could start at LG tomorrow, in place of a possibly injured player (who I REALLY hope can start, because he's better).
-
I'll never forget living in Lakeland, FL as a kid and driving by the HS stadium. The wall above the end zone seats had the team name DREADNAUGHTS painted across it. I wanted to play there someday (I moved twice after that) and even as a kid, could see it was such a cool mascot. Unique, tough-sounding....and as an adult, Lakeland has been a nationally-ranked program more often than not.
The point is, I didn't know anything about the team, don't think I saw a game, or anything like that, I just had the peek inside a part of the stadium and a nickname and was hooked.
I'd totally want to see the big title game for AZ, but there's big-boy college football at the same time and even if there wasn't, I'd want to see the heavyweight (literally) fight, too.

We lost 74-7. Just read the article. The other school has a WR going to OSU, who is the #1 recruit in the nation. Their RB is a Michigan commit. They have LBs committed to MSU and Wisconsin. They've won 48 straight games, and 10 state titles in the last 18 years. It was a fun ride, but...yeah...

Oh, THAT team.
I watched them on one of the National TV games this year. They run the Wing-T and that WR played defense too. They faced a team with a 4 and 5 star DL and just smashed them.
that team is awesome.

The name Dreadnought was applied to the first "modern" battleship built by GB circa 1905 that sparked a naval race that partially contributed to WW One.
Various countries expended enormous sums on battleships and battlecruisers that ended up being used rarely in the actual conflict, because they were too valuable to send into harm's way, with one notable exception.
GB switched from using coal to oil and now had an interest in securing oil fields in the middle east which later resulted in some curious lines being drawn in the Paris 1919 conference post-war. Then of course WW Two was significantly impacted by the need for oil.

Not surprised the QB never sniffed the field, there's a reason ASU had zero interest in the kid despite being in their backyard. I lost absolutely no sleep when he committed to Wisconsin.
Now his brother the OG, that's a good player who I would have liked to have seen go to ASU but knew we had little shot with him being a UW legacy.

HMS Dreadnought was built as the Germans were (stupidly, wastefully, provocatively) trying to build a fleet that could challenge the Royal Navy for command of the seas. Admiral Jacky Fisher, First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, conceived the idea of building a class of ships that would make all other battleships in the world obsolete. They would be bigger, faster, heavier, and more heavily armed. All of the big guns in its armament would be the same caliber.
The last class of battleships the Germans built before Dreadnought's arrival were those of the Deutschland class. SMS Deutschland and her four sisters featured a top speed of 18.5 knots and main and secondary batteries of 4 11” guns and 14 6.7” guns. Each ship was 418’8” long and weighed 14,218 tons fully loaded.
By comparison, Dreadnought was 527’ long, weighed 21,060 tons fully loaded, and had a top speed of 21.6 knots. She had main and secondary batteries of 10 12” guns and 27 3” guns. Dreadnought was a one-off. She would be followed by the slightly larger and improved Bellerophon class. Those, in turn, would be succeeded by the St. Vincent class, still bigger, more heavily armed, and carrying 12" main guns. Then would come the one-off HMS Neptune, which would test new turret arrangements. The 2-ship Colossus class that followed was basically an improved Neptune design. Next would the 4-ship Orion class, much larger and heavier, and with 13.5" main guns. These were such a leap ahead that they were called "super-dreadnoughts." They would be followed by the improved 4-ship King George V class and the further-improved 4-ship Iron Duke class. All of these would be in service by the start of World War I in 1914. They would be quickly followed in 1914-15 by the 5-ship Queen Elizabeth class, bigger, faster, and armed with 15" main guns.
I haven't mentioned the parallel development and production of battle-cruisers, as big as battleships, with less armor but bigger engines, designed to be able to outgun anything they couldn't outrun and outrun anything they couldn't outgun.
Dreadnought and the bigger, better, faster, better-armed battleships that followed did not cow the Germans into abandoning their attempts to build a battle fleet to challenge the Brits--it caused them to redouble their efforts and build their own versions built to a somewhat different philosophy, emphasizing better armor protection at the expense of smaller main guns. So the naval arms race got even more expensive than it had been.

The Washington Naval Treaty in the 1920s was intended to prevent a replay of that naval arms race. It sort of worked for a while. The US converted two planned battle cruises into carriers, Lexington and Yorktown. Both were fine ships as carriers. Lexington was lost at Coral Sea and Yorktown at Midway. And of course carriers usurped the battleship as queen of the seas.
We were in San Diego a few years back and I saw three fleet carriers in the harbor across the way. I wondered if the locals had any idea there were six nuclear reactors parked "next door".

Lexington's sister was Saratoga, who survived the war.
Yorktown was the lead ship of her class. Her sisters were Enterprise and Hornet.
