thank you SO much, Erin.  Though i know you were answering a personal call for the personal relationship you had with him, i also feel like you were an ambassador for all of us.   We couldn't have chosen or expected a better one.  Thank you.  

I can't whittle words and make them what I want, and if i try it's apparent- Hooky didn't have that problem.  It was effortless and they just flowed.  That is the mark of not only a writer, a storyteller extraordinaire, but also of a person with a keen mind that has already shifted through the clutter of life and marked a path for the rest of us to follow.  as little as i understand about it, i do grasp spinning a yarn of greatness has more to do with HOW a tale is told more so than WHAT is told.

I hope the coming weeks will entail a lot of the antics and shenanigans being shared.  but i wanted to put on my captain obvious cape for a second and state:  ol' ND Rules sure knew how to live.  His story, from beginning to what we think is the end, has only suffered his own escape insofar as him being the central character- but the story lives on.  How many of y'all can say that?  I can't.  I'll barely have earth atop me before people have stepped off- CharlieHorse will have people following his lead- not only in some absurd eFashion (or is that iFashion?) but beyond doubt also in real life.  I mean, wow- that is an impact- a great one.  he impacted a lot of folks, all good in nature.  if that isn't an act to follow i ain't quite sure what is.  May we all succeed in our own adventure.

I wasn't going to post all of them, since what happens at the board meeting stays at the meeting, but the group pics are always innocent enough to share with the class.   ;-)

I really did go to represent all of us.  Good to have your support as well in the decision, as I'm sure many more would have tried to attend if they could.   While I felt awkward and unsure about the decision at first, once I was there and realized how warm, accepting & curious his family members were in speaking to me, I felt at ease and certain that I had made the right choice to be there.     I showed up as an outsider, but leaving the reception I felt like I belonged there just as any of you would, as a caring friend & show of support to the family of a man that meant more than just words on a message board.

I am grieved beyond words. So many dialogues over the years... One of the best of us.

Thank you to those who were able to ship some joys on behalf of this old place and for bearing the burden of passing on this sad news.

I don't do well with these things, and this one is especially hard coming right on the heels of my friend Denise's death at the hands of breast cancer.

All I can say is, thank you Erin for going.  And for representing all of us.  That means a lot to me, to us, and I'm sure to Jon as well.

I must say JCG's passing comes as quite a shock to me. Not sure if I told the story here or not but when I "lost" the group after Dustin's site went dark I spent a few days typing in College Football Forum Big XII Backporch and other search terms and came up blank (or more accurately, too many results).  In a moment of genius I typed in "Hooky Hornstein" knowing that there should only be a few results and bingo it led me to this site where I rejoined all my friends.  

It's amazing that although I never met the man in person I feel like I knew him well enough to call him a friend.  Jon, you will be missed.

I'm not sure why I went back to this board and this thread tonight, but I am surprised to find that I didn't post a remembrance.

Maybe that's because I was struggling with what to say.

I found Hooky (as I will always think of him) to be hilarious and infuriating, thought-provoking and bewildering.  The more wrong I thought he was on something about OU and Texas, or about the state of Oklahoma (birthplace of his mother, IIRC) in comparison to the Great State of Texas, and the more quickly I jumped in to correct him, the more likely it was that he would have right at hand some factoid that would undercut my "brilliant" rebuttal of what it was he had said.

I owed him a beer.  We were talking old fiddle music, or old railroad songs, or something like that, and I said I'd buy a beer if he knew what the "jungles" were in "Wabash Cannonball."  He knew the answer.  But I never had a chance to buy him that beer.

It would have been his birthday a couple of weeks ago.  I had it written on my calendar from last year's transfer of birthday notes.
