I don't think Mack tarnished his legacy goin back to UNC

he's now the winningest coach there with over 100 victories

and his teams in his 2nd stint were always respectable, even this season - 6 wins so far

I was with some guys who drove from Fort Rucker (now Novosel), AL (Flight School), to Chapel Hill in order to see UNC host Army. The Tarheads won 62-8. The atmosphere was pleasant.
UNC was decent that year. They upset a SWC team of note in the Sun Bowl. This was the Dick Crum era, and the bowl game made them the first ACC team to go bowling in four consecutive years. And they won all of them.
I think that all UNC football coaches either leave for greener pastures or they get fired/forcibly retired. Or, in Mack's case, both.

I was disappointed in Chapel Hill, I thought it would be akin to Athens, but it is much smaller and lacks a lot of stuff I was used to having.  I guess that meant fewer distractions as a student.  I think once an allegiance is set in a person, it's tough to change.

I do have some memories of the place that are pretty solid.

Three INTs didn't help Bama of course. 

2.3 yards per rush.  11 for 27 passing.  234 total yards.

Those are losing numbers.

A big part of it was only one turnover, and that one was deep in Bama territory.
The defense, which has played well all year, played its best game. I think that Milroe was not expecting what he got, and he got rattled.
Sooners are 6-5 right now, but they should be 7-4 or better. They had the previous game (vs. Mizzou) won, but found a way to lose it, with Mizzou scoring 14 points in the last 2 minutes. They gave up 21 points off turnovers in the first 5 minutes against South Carolina.
It's amazing what good things can happen when you don't turn the ball over.

Turnovers are a huge component in contested outcomes, and usually major upsets.  And they tend to be random, I think, more often than not.

A team plays say 5 games where they are ~10 point favorites, they well might see one of them with a -3 TO margin and lose.  I bet there is a very good correlation between TO margin and "major" upsets.

I suspect that you're right.
But when you lead the nation in turnovers, it's not random. It's a problem.
In the 1971 GOTC, OU had three turnovers, Nebraska one. Nebraska won 35-31. There was much predicting beforehand that the team that took better care of the football would win. And so it proved to be.
OU's wishbone teams often lost the turnover battle.
Three-to-one was also the turnover margin in the OU-Bama game Saturday night, but Bama provided the three. OU's defense was hitting Milroe hard. Maybe the random factor was OU only turning the ball over once.

There are offensive styles more prone to TOs, and some defenses seem able to generate them, though perhaps the latter is more probability than reality.
