They played to their abilities on Saturday. They executed their game plan, caught a couple of breaks, and dominated a lesser opponent.
USC is going to land some haymakers this week. I don't think it's an impossible task for Texas, but I need a couple of things:
(1) Specifically, I need Brandon Jones to know his role at Safety. He has fantastic skills, but has been caught wondering if he should have played coverage instead of looking inside. Too many opponent receivers have run seam routes away from the CBs only to find lots of green grass where the Cover-2 help should have been.
(2) Execute your role as a team. Mike Tyson said, "Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth!". USC is going to hit Texas in the mouth. In seasons past, Texas has abandoned their defensive schooling and started playing on tilt. I'm hoping the SJSU game will remind them of what they can accomplish when they play as a team. Trying to cover USC with a series of individual athletic performances on defense will lead to another embarrassing score line (see point 1 above).
