I'd welcome the Huskers and Ags back to the B12.

Nebraska always needed a recruiting pitch. The corn fed boys are big and all, but they relied on convincing outside players to visit. When they were rolling and smashing everyone with power option, it advertised itself (editorial commentary about Big 8 qualifications ignored for purposes of brevity).

Obviously, selling UNL to outsiders has been rough lately. Leaving the Big 12 didn't make it easier. However, I'd think that the NIL rulings might be their way back. Nebraska has no major professional sports teams. Seems like there should be plenty of branding opportunities.

Maybe, but I kinda think NIL opportunities are really just going to become table stakes.  All of the big-name programs (and even wealthy programs that aren't big-name) will be able to offer quite a bit to the athletes.

Doesn't mean NU won't be successful at it.  I just don't think it will end up being a competitive advantage, except against the have-nots.

As always, the rich will get richer...

so far, I know it's early, there's no talk of big money being funneled from boosters

that could easily change overnight

I imagine all the TRUE dealings are occurring right now.

The first wave was just the student-led initiatives, their attempts to launch clothing or other kinds of promotions, on their own.

But now the corporations will be getting involved.  And those negotiations will take time and be a lot more thorough.

And of course, as far as recruiting HS kids goes, none of that can be announced until the kid is actually enrolled and on-campus.  Many (most?) of the states have some provision along those lines, to avoid recruiting bidding wars, even though those will happen regardless.  We just won't hear about them until the Fall.

Nah. I'm talking about legit branding opportunities. In Texas, things are kind of localized. A Longhorn football great can play well in several locales, but not everyone's a fan. Every school in America will have a decent amount of those licensing deals.

Nebraska has no professional sports franchises. Being the successful QB of the Huskers would let you plaster your face wherever you'd like.

I'm not saying it's instant recruiting mojo. I'm saying it's a better enticement than they've had in a while.

Nebraska has no professional sports franchises. Being the successful QB of the Huskers would let you plaster your face wherever you'd like.... in Nebraska.

But the state of Nebraska's population is smaller than the population of the city of Austin metro area, so I really don't think it's going to make much difference.

And nationally, there's no way the QB at Nebraska is going to gain more national recognition than the QB at Texas.  Texas is the largest brand in all of college sports.  I'm not saying this to belittle Nebraska, I'm just saying I don't think this is going to give them some edge that their peers in the B1G can't also capitalize on in much the same way.

not going to be much national branding - college football isn't national

not even Bama or Clemson or Ohio St. or Texas
