IMHO, this game is critical for Cleveland's playoff hopes.

Now, I'm not some delusional "Browns are going to win the Super Bowl" Clevelanders.  They aren't that good.  That was made abundantly clear in the 38-6 loss to Baltimore and the 38-7 loss to Pittsburgh.

That said, the Browns have a VERY good chance to make the playoffs and they could potentially even get a plausibly winnable first round game.  I think that playoff experience needs to be the realistic goal and two playoff games would be better than one even if the second one is a blowout loss.

Here is why I say the game against the Vegas Raiders (that is still hard for me to say) is crucial:
The Browns are 5-2 with nine remaining games.  Of those, three are near sure losses to the 6-0 Steelers, the 5-1 Titans, and the 5-1 Ravens.  Another five are near sure wins over the 0-7 Jets, 1-6 Giants, 1-6 Jaguars, 1-6 Texans (I still want to say 'Oilers'), and the 2-4-1 Eagles.  That only leaves one other game, this week's contest against the 3-3 Raiders.

In theory it doesn't make much difference.  With a win the Browns will be 6-2 and expected to finish 11-5.  With a loss the Browns will be 5-3 and expected to finish 10-6.  Either way they stand a pretty good chance to make the playoffs.  Here is why it matters:

  • Room for error:  With a win here, the Browns can afford to lose to one of the five bad teams left on their schedule.  With a loss here an upset might be fatal to Cleveland's playoff hopes.  This is especially true because:
  • Tiebreakers:  The Browns already own a H2H win over Indy.  Right now the Browns would be the sixth seed in the AFC.  Indy is #7 trailing the Browns by 1/2 a game and the tiebreaker.  Miami and Vegas are two games down.  If the Browns win this, there really won't be anyone threatening them from behind.  If they lose this they'll only be 1/2 game ahead of the Raiders and since the Raiders have the tiebreaker that could be trouble.

Are you accounting for the expanded playoffs here?  I just noticed you mentioned how far back the #7 team was

Yes. That makes it even more likely that Cleveland will get in, but they need the best seed possible if they are going to have a prayer.

Didn't watch the game but heard(sports Radio) there were plenty of drops, and the "D" didn't play too bad considering the 3 & outs

Defense was bad, particularly against the run (which was new usually it is the secondary that is the issue) and on 3rd and long continually gave up first downs. Could not get off the field. Didn't help that Myles was out a good part of the game with a knee injury.

That said, a number of big drops by our receivers were the actual difference in the game. I could point to 3 drops that would have totally changed the game.

Steelers looking really good. If Devin Bush hadn’t gotten hurt for the year with a torn acl I just might have had them ticketed for the Super Bowl. Still leaning Chiefs in the AFC.

How did DK Metcalf get drafted in the end of the second round? He looks like a Calvin Johnson clone. He is literally unguardable.

Trade deadline is tomorrow.

Just throwing this out there- but if you’re the Bucs do you go even more all in and offer a 1st round pick to NE for CB Stephon Gilmore?

I think NE needs to take that deal. They need all the 1st round picks they can get. That roster sucks.

If you’re the Pats do you try to trade Gilmore for a 1st rd pick, McCourty for a 2nd, and tank the season to ensure you get a top 3 pick so you can take either Lawerence or Fields?

Cause I think I would.

Why the hell does Bruce Arians insist on playing a freaking INFERIOR player in Ronald Jones over Leonard Fournette? Makes zero sense.

Antoine Winfield Jr is freaking awesome. Might wind up being the pick of the entire draft.

Jesus Christ Bruce Arians is a clown coach. How does this guy have a reputation of being a good coach again? He’s never won shit and he’s a grade A retard when it comes to personnel and situational football.

Bucs are getting AB next week. If they don’t get to a Super Bowl it will be because they have an absolute shit burger for a head coach. This dude is Barry Switzer level stupid.

Heyward hurt now too.  I think their only chance to beat KC, is to hold on for home field, and get a Heinz Field late January snowstorm

Midway through the 2020 season.....

Tom Brady: 20 Pass TD's, 4 INT's, 102.3 QB Rating

New England QB's: 3 Pass TD's, 11 INT's, 67 QB Rating

Yeesh. Same offense as last year basically up in New England. Brady deserved MVP in 2019 taking that awful offense and getting that team to 12-4 and throwing for 4,000+ yards and 24 TD's v 8 INT's with that cast of bums. Insane how truly awful they are on offense without him.
