Lots of folks say anything after "Unforgettable Fire" constitutes a "U2 sell-out song."

I don't personally believe that because I love Joshua Tree, but music snobs are gonna music snob. :)

Some of their stuff is 40+/- years old.

You can get "classic car" license plates for a car that is 25-30 years old.

GnR can be classic rock.

Obviously true, but it's just a mindset thing.  First, I'm not ready to be old and have the music of my youth classified as "Classic Rock."  But second and more practical is that, like I mentioned before, now the "Classic Rock" station lumps it all together and I'm forced to endure boring crap like Blue Oyster Cult and the Who, before I can get to the meaty goodness of some Van Halen and The Cars.

None is 40 years old. Appetite came out in 1987. 

I get genre-spanning bands. Aerosmith is one that CAN have some songs that count as classic rock, but some do not. 

Classic Rock only qualifies for songs/albums released prior to 1980.
