Sorry to interrupt the B1G power rankings, but this post doesn't warrant its own thread.
The pollsters are dumb.
*I'll preface this with acknowledging that it doesn't actually matter.  But it also shouldn't exist:
23 Tennessee
25 Florida

Now I'm obviously not actually upset about this, but it's stupidity in action.  I'd even posit if this was the year-end poll, the voters would have "corrected" themselves.  But since it's just September, they get to be lazy and stupid.

Both teams are 2-1.  Both have 13-point losses on the road.  Florida's was to Utah, ranked 11th, and thus, is a better loss.
One of Florida's wins is vs ranked Tennessee.  UT's only wins are vs a train wreck UVA and Austin Peay.

They're ranked 2 spots apart, and Florida has the h2h.  So I'm just taking the time to shine a spotlight on the voter's hypocrisy.
Yes, this ranking is basically based on the preseason poll, but why do they get to be so lazy?
Over and out.
you're 100% correct. it's almost as if we didn't just have a game on the field to decide who was better between Tennessee and Florida....

sometimes the polls can be absolutely baffling.

A team can lose on the road and still be better than the team it lost to.

Especially at night.

That said, do I think TN is better than UF?

No. TN has no QB.

Idk why people bought the hype on Milton....guy sucks. He got benched for Cade McNamara at Michigan and transferred to Tennessee where he was the starter only to get benched again for Hendon Hooker. He's....not good.

  • Penn State - Didn't light the world on fire vs Ill but didn't need to. It is still a conf win.
  • Michigan - Everyone has a bad game. Jury is still out on this team, but leaving here until more is known.
  • Ohio State - Finally showed what the offense is capable of. The Defense is starting to win me over, but let's see how they do with ND.
  • Iowa - 41 points? If Iowa is able to score points and still have that defense, they could be a dangerous team.
  • Maryland - I couldn't find anyone else to put ahead of them at this point.
  • Wisconsin - I think this team has potential but they have to put it together.
  • Rutgers - I couldn't find anyone else to put ahead of them at this point.
  • Minnesota - They need to figure out their offense.
  • Illinois - 9 through 13 are interchangeable at this point.
  • Nebraska - Ditto
  • Purdue - Ditto
  • Michigan State - Ditto
  • Indiana - Ditto
  • Northwestern - Rock meet bottom.

If I were running a computer ranking I wouldn't want one game to be more than 10% so what I'd do is:
  • Preseason ranking 100% based on adjusted* prior year performance
  • 1st week 90% adjusted prior year performance, 10% current year performance
  • 2nd week 80%/20%
  • 3rd week 70%/30% - This is where we are now
  • . . .
  • 9th week 10% adjusted prior year performance, 90% current year performance
  • 10th week 100% current year performance

I agree with @847badgerfan , UF definitely looks better but that was a night game in a very tough environment for TN. It *COULD* turn out that UF's best and TN's worst game of the year was just played.

*Adjusted: This would be to account for returning players and yhe relative talent of the new players.

net success rate....Michigan dominated in the trenches but obviously 4 turnovers (3 really poor decisions by JJ and a fumble on a kick return) made the game seem closer than it actually was.

Penn State-Illinois being dead even kind of a red flag imo. Illinois front 7 bullied Penn State OL in the trenches on defense. Good thing for Penn State Illinois' offense and QB flat out suck ass.

Last week in parenthesis

  • PENN STATE (3) - enough of a sample size now
  • MICHIGAN (1) - Rutgers will be by far the most competent team UM has faced, surprised at the size of the spread
  • OHIO STATE (2) - vibes are better, but we'll finally learn something
  • IOWA (4) - way to get the Ferentz fluff points late
  • MARYLAND (5) - September Maryland rolls along
  • WISCONSIN (6) - I expected way more out of Mordecai
  • RUTGERS (9) - they won't win, but this team looks like they can put up a fight in Ann Arbor
  • MINNESOTA (7) - brutal afternoon for Kaliakmanis
  • ILLINOIS (11) - Penn State brought about their D game, and Illinois couldn't stop turning the ball over...and yet I moved them up 2 spots
  • MICHIGAN STATE (8) - woof
  • PURDUE (10) - giving up 200 rushing yards to the opponents QB is very troubling
  • NEBRASKA (13) - Lincoln folks just needed some good vibes
  • INDIANA (12) - I really like Tayven Jackson, but he's got nothing to work with
  • NORTHWESTERN (14) - I'm not sure Fitz would have even made a difference

https://twitter.com/On3sports/status/1703407965531672748?s=20
I think you want this to be a shot at Michigan but the FPI is a calculation and I'm pretty sure that what is hurting Michigan here is that their SoS is abysmal.

Michigan's opponents and what they did in their other games:
ECU is 0-3. Michigan held them to 3 which is better than their other opponents but both Marshall (31) and ApSt (43) scored more on them than Michigan (30).

UNLV is 2-1 but one win was FCS and the other was a 40-37 nailbiter over Vandy. Again, Michigan's D looks great by comparison but Vandy scored more on them than Michigan did.

Bowling Green is 1-2 but the lone win came against an FCS opponent. Again, Michigan's D looks great by comparison but Liberty scored more on them than Michigan did.

I actually think that Michigan's offense is just fine and the main reason their output has been so unimpressive is simply because they haven't needed points because their D has been so dominant. That analysis is why they are still ranked #2 in the polls and power rankings but that takes human analysis. To a computer just comparing scores the Wolverine offense looks mediocre at best.

Would you move them down if they lost?

Remember that either #2 PSU or #4 Iowa WILL lose on Saturday as will either #1 M or #7 RU.

Your #6 Wisconsin is playing at 1-2 Purdue this weekend and already has a loss to a team (probably) not as good as ND and your #5 UMD is playing MSU in East Lansing so not much opportunity for either of them to impress.

Assuming that tOSU loses while Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Maryland all win I would think the logical next week ranking would be:
  • M
  • PSU
  • tOSU
  • Iowa (if it is a close loss and UMD doesn't look amazing)
  • UMD
  • UW
No?
