Week 1 B1G games
« on: August 24, 2023, 09:59:09 AM »
I'll start with the three league games:

  • Nebraska at Minnesota, Thursday, August 31 at 8pm on FOX
  • Ohio State at Indiana, Saturday, September 2 at 330pm on CBS
  • Northwestern at Rutgers, Sunday, September 3 at noon on CBS
IMHO the UNL@MN game is very important for both teams.  I *THINK* Wisconsin is the favorite in the B1G-W but not by a prohibitive margin.  I *THINK* that Purdue and Northwestern are more-or-less hopeless but I could be wrong.  I see the B1G-W as pretty wide open so either the Cornhuskers or the Gophers could contend for or even win the last B1G-W title but I can't see the loser of this game getting there so I see this as almost an elimination game . . . in August.

The other two league games are less interesting to me because I just don't think that the Hoosiers and Wildcats stand much of a chance.  Indiana is at home but Memorial Stadium turns into Horseshoe-West when the Buckeyes come to town so that doesn't really help and the hapless Wildcats are on the road.

The other eight B1G teams are all hosting and most or arguably all are hosting cupcakes:
  • Michigan State hosts Central Michigan on Friday, September 1 at 7pm on FS1
  • Michigan hosts ECU on Saturday, September 2 at noon on Peacock
  • Iowa hosts Utah State on Saturday, September 2 at noon on FS1
  • Purdue hosts Fresno State on Saturday, September 2 at noon on BTN
  • Wisconsin hosts Buffalo on Saturday, September 2 at 330pm on FS1
  • Maryland hosts Towson on Saturday, September 2 at 330pm on BTN
  • Penn State hosts West Virginia on Saturday, September 2 at 7pm on NBC
  • Illinois hosts Toledo on Saturday, September 2 at 730pm on BTN

MSU, M, IA, UW, and UMD are playing definite cupcakes.  Losses would be catastrophic and even a competitive game would be seriously concerning.

Fresno State puts out some good teams and Purdue is in a major rebuild so that game could be a big challenge for the Boilermakers.

West Virginia is usually pretty good but they look to be a bit of a mess this year and PSU looks to be really good so I just can't see this game being competitive.  Maybe in Morgantown but not in Happy Valley.

Toledo is typically a really good MAC team so maybe they'll be able to put up a fight in Champaign but I doubt it.

hate that I have to subscribe to a bullshit peacock streaming service I don't want and will never use just to watch a football game. FU Comcast.

Nebraska @ Minnesota is going to be a great game and the best B1G game of the week for sure. If Rhule can start off the season with an upset of what should be a pretty solid Minnesota team on the road- man that'd be huge for morale and momentum for the Cornhuskers.

None of the other games are that interesting. Ohio State is going to slaughter Indiana- regardless of who starts at QB. Northwestern vs Rutgers will be a battle of the dumpster fires. Penn State is going to destroy West Virginia. And then everyone else is playing G5/FCS teams.

definitely not a must win for Rhule, but it might be for Fleck

Rhule's team needs to look decent and hang tough into the 2nd half

obviously not a must win for Rhule, it's his first game ever and he's rebuilding the entire program.

Fleck is probably good at Minnesota regardless of winning or losing imo. He's about as good as they are ever possibly going to get as a coach and that program is pretty much at it's ceiling. Throw out the COVID year and his record is honestly as good as anyone could ever hope for at Minnesota. 5-7 year 1 rebuild, then 7-6, 11-2, (remove COVID year), 9-4, 9-4.

It's freaking Minnesota. That is a phenomenal record for a place like that. He is about maxing them out. If they are dumb enough to fire him- well, good luck finding a new coach....

I can assure you that Fleck's seat is as cold as a block of ice no matter what happens next Thursday night.

Last night at trivia we discussed our strategy and materiel requirements for next Thursday's tailgate.

my idea of a must win for Fleck pertains to this season and the chance to win the West

not losing his job

oh ok. gotcha. still don't know if that one is even a must win to win the West. that division is a complete toss up and it might be like last year where NO ONE wanted to win it and Purdue backdoor'd it.

IMO the West is very open.  Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois have an equal best shot at winning the West..  Nebraska, Minnesota, and Purdue have an outside shot.  Only NW is out of it.

I remember the big joke last year was that with 3 weeks left there was still a mathematical chance all 7 Big Ten West schools could finish in a 7-way tie for first at 4-5 and that somehow NW would win the 7-way tiebreaker.  I guess it was all part of an effort to prove that a 1-5 NW team still had a chance to win the division.

Well of course that did not happen but the West was very close to a 4-way tie for first the last 2 years,  which would have been perfect.
