'19 LSU's defense wasn't just "not great," it was the worst NC defense since 2010 Auburn's, and idk how far back you'd have to go to find one as bad as that.

To be fair, defense is sort of regressing, statistically, like annual inflation adjustments.  But still.  A bad defense, when compared to other NC teams.

Yep, going 9-3 (.750 win %) will be considered elite, just like the NFL.  With the differences between college and pro dwindling, who will want to watch college anymore?

It's basically the worst-possible long-term plan ever.
BTW I don't think I ever called it a good plan.

That doesn't mean it's not going to come to pass...

Yeah, idk if I'm optimistic or pessimistic, I'm just focused on the FACT that it doesn't have to happen.

There are ways, dude.

Well, there may be ways, but none of them are remotely within my ability to affect outcomes, and honestly nobody is going to bother to ask me.

And even to an extent that we can say that there is a governing body (like the NCAA) setting the rules, the issue with things like the NIL, transfer portal, House settlement, stuff is that it was forced upon them by outside forces. It can be one thing to try to set the rules that are best, but if state legislatures or the judiciary say your rules can't be enforced... You've got a problem outside your own ability to control.

Even then, the CFP and the NCAA are distinct legal entities... So even there, the NCAA may only have limited ability to determine how the champion of its premier sport is determined.

So you've got a lot of chefs in the kitchen, and we all know how well that typically works...

Probably won’t be considered elite. It’ll just drive fan bases more crazy.

Depends how much fat is trimmed.....how many peasants fall away.
Initially, no one's going 13-1 or something like that, and won't for a good, long while until there's a regression to a bell curve.

In the summer everyone is supposed to be at their most optimistic, with the season right around the corner. But it's all doom and gloom around here.

I think most fans are at their "most optimistic" now, even if that means they are hoping for 7-5.  We here tend to be more realistic and worried than most fans.

I see comments by GaTech fans on FB and THEY are quite optimistic, perhaps overly so, though I think they will be "pretty good".

Yeah, when the Big Ten Media days happen later this month, the Purdue HC will be optimistic, the UCLA HC will be optimistic, all of them. T'is the season.

These days, for a top ten kind of team, they really only play a 3 or 4 or 5 game slate.  UGA lost a lot of neat OOC games with conference rearrangements, so they play 3 pastries, again, this year, plus Tech OOC (which they COULD lose but probably won't).  Their SEC slate is pretty tough, but they also play some weaker SEC teams.  If UGA is really good, they COULD lose to Texas, Bama, Ole Miss, and @ Tennessee.  They will likely be 10+ point favorites over Florida and @Auburn, @UK, @MSU, @Tech.  This of course presumes they are really good and those other teams are about as expected.  Florida is a definite possible L of course.

If there is some major realignment and the pastries ALL drop away, and they have to face basically 12 SEC level teams, that 3-4 game slate turns into something much more challenging, and interesting as they would face 4-5 more opponents with a decent shot at an upset.

Yeah, UGA fans' viewing pleasure has been screwed due to bad luck.  I guess on a long-enough timeline, every game will be a conference game, right?
