Yes this was inevitable.  I think the courts are going to strike down anything that limits the terms at all.

I actually think this is a good thing, I don't know why the limited it to 4 years in the first place, it takes a lot of people 5 or more years to finish school.  I don't think it will make any difference in the larger schools because most of that talent will go pro if they can but it may help the smaller schools where there is no future in the NFL for a lot of really talented college football players.

On the other hand, it may make a mess bringing in new players, because if some really talented experienced guy has been there for 4 years they may want to go somewhere else just because.  I do think it should be limited to 5 or possibly 6 years, and nobody over 25 years old.  Not sure if that is legally enforceable, but I would be in favor of it.

The new College Sports Commission has cleared more than 8,300 name, image and likeness deals worth nearly $80 million, it said Thursday in its first full update on how the new system is working.

The commission, which is in charge of approving contracts worth $600 or more between college athletes and third-party companies that pay them, said 28,342 students signed up on its NIL Go platform between June 11, when it launched, and Aug. 31. Nearly 3,200 “representatives” or agents had also signed up.

The platform was created as part of the House settlement, which allows schools to pay athletes directly for their NIL, while also offering them a chance to make money from outside groups. NIL Go is in charge of analyzing the outside deals.

It said 332 deals had not been cleared to date and 75 had been resubmitted, while none had entered arbitration, which is available for parties who feel their deals have been wrongly rejected.

The commission said the most common clearance issues were delays in attesting to or providing required information; contradictory deal terms, misreporting of deal terms or mistakes in entering deal terms; and deals that don’t satisfy the “valid business purpose” requirement that caused confusion when the platform first rolled out.

The CSC said values of the deals ranged as high as $1.8 million. It said its “deal flow reports” will be updated on a regular basis.

Paying the athletes was inevitable. The real question is how does college sports get defined going forward. Are there any rules that the NCAA can implement regarding eligibility that aren't an unfair restraint on trade? Does the consumer--the TV watching public--care if a player has been enrolled at the university for 6 years? We already know the answer is no. What about 7? 8? 10? 12? Does the consumer care if a player is enrolled in school at all? Does this all go back to pre-Teddy Roosevelt "college" football? That will be a fundamentally different product.

I suspect the NCAA will be able to keep enrollment requirements, and will probably be able to put a cap on the number of years of eligibility, but I suspect it won't be 4. But it is an interesting thought exercise that will play out in the courts.

nah. we can all thank the NCAA for being a useless shitbag organization that was way behind the times and not out in front of the situation and evolving and adapting.

Scholarships, room and board, training, tutors, dieticians, nutritionists, medical care, etc.

I guess that's not getting paid.

Oh well.

give me a fucking break. gtfo here with that nonsensical shit please.

the scholarships cost the schools literally nothing. zip. nada. zilch. the other stuff- sure- but guess what kids risking life and limb to generate BILLIONS of dollars for these programs kind of need a place to live and sleep and food to eat. who'dda thunk it! And the quality of all that other shit you listed just helps teams attract better players and in turn win more games- so they are investments from the schools to build winning programs/cultures- not handouts just because.

these conferences are raking in tens of billions of dollars from their tv contracts- which the schools all get 9-figure checks from every single year. The schools also get tens of millions in bonus money for playoff appearance, get tens of millions of dollars from ticket sales & concessions for home games, tens of millions of dollars in licensing & royalty fees from merchandising deals, apparel sales, etc..

without the players the sport is nothing and the conferences and schools make nothing. no one is fucking watching on tv or going to the games or buying merchandise if the teams are full of Mr. 5'7" generic white guy future dentists or insurance salesmen- which in turn would make the money dry up and the thing would just die on the vine.

the greedy pigs running the NCAA and these conferences and athletic programs didn't get ahead of the curve and strike some kind of equitable fair deal with players and ensure they were taken care of- and now we are where we are in this hell scape shithole. yeah, so I blame them.

I'm a Wisconsin graduate so scholarships and such mean a lot to me.

Those kids would not have an opportunity to get a decent job - let alone in the NFL.

The NFL deserves a lot of blame too. They should fund their own minor league and then we can get back to watching student-athletes play games for the name on the front of the jersey.

Why would they do that when they've been provided one for free for the last century?

The only way the NFL is going to start a farm league is if they think they can make it profitable.

Sure, and let's drop all the games from TV, and pay the coach $120,000 a year.  I'd be all for it.
