Hmmm. If cities matter, why can’t Houston fill a stadium?

The University of Houston is a big public school in a big Texan city. Maybe Houstonians just don’t like football very much. Or maybe all of this is a question about schools, not local populations.
Same as PITT-Pittsburgh easier to draw from a whole state/region than a municipality

Houston is a commuter school.

USC is the most popular brand in a massive state, a college blueblood, located in one of the largest cities in the USA.

These are not even remotely comparable.

UH is a commuter school. Their own alumni don’t even care about UH.
It's like UI-Chicago then.

I'm not sure I agree with Kirby on the first point.  Within the same position group, if a senior is better than the incoming freshman, he'll be paid accordingly.  If he isn't paid accordingly, then he'll leave for someplace that will pay him.

On his second point, he's absolutely right.  A lot of schools are likely to start cutting sports in order to make payroll.

I'm guessing entering freshmen are getting lucrative offers to sign at some university, while the seniors already there might never have had an NIL deal when he was a frosh.

But, generally speaking, NIL has some issues.  So does the portal.  So does football.
