Define used to for Stanford.

I already did.  Golden era.  Back in the day.  Post leather helmets but pre scholarship limits.  Probably. :)

Ahhh, then it was the hula hoop.

The kids had something else to do. Texas schools saved themselves by allowing in-stadium hooping, over the protests of older fans.

Well the real problem is the falsa analogy originally made comparing SMU which is at best the 6th or 7th most popular football team in Texas, to USC and UCLA which are easily the top 2 brands in California.

I don't even know what the #6 or #7 brand in California college football would be, but whatever it is, that's the appropriate comparison.

What's behind USC, UCLA, Stanford, and Berkley?  Fresno State?  San Diego State?  SMU's comparison would come at the end of all of those.
100% agree.

You have to go by percentages. If SMU is seventh most popular team, then that's about halfway down the overall pecking order. If SMU is the seventh most popular team out of thirteen, then they are right in the middle. California only has seven FBS teams, so the fourth most popular one would be the one right in the middle for them.

I disagree. I mean, that might be a way to try to compare SMU specifically, but it's not particularly relevant to the topic of discussion which is the relative popularity of college football in the state of California compared to the state of Texas.

The fact that there are 13 FBS teams in Texas and only half as many in California is just another point of evidence that college football is more popular in Texas than it is in California.  Especially considering the state of California has about 1.5x as many colleges as the state of Texas.

If you're trying to normalize the comparison, then the way to do it would be total average attendance of all FBS teams in Texas divided by the population of Texas, compared to total average attendance of all FBS teams in California divided by the population of California.  This per capita comparison will show an even starker contrast since California is about 33% larger in population than Texas.

And I suspect the state of Ohio might be even higher in such a per capita comparison than Texas.

Hmmm. If cities matter, why can’t Houston fill a stadium?

The University of Houston is a big public school in a big Texan city. Maybe Houstonians just don’t like football very much. Or maybe all of this is a question about schools, not local populations.

Ohio has eight teams, one more than California, but only one draws much interest of any note.

UH is a commuter school. Their own alumni don’t even care about UH.

Didn't mention what life was like just the price. I can tell you that someone in your tax bracket may be sweating it out a lot less than those in my tax bracket. And good on you ,you're insightful and forward thinking and evidently apply yourself. I have two friends living in the Phoenix area one that moved there in November '22 and in'23 his wife and he plopped down a lot small fortune to build a new home. According to him the locals have been fuming about those deserting the land of milk and honey and flooding into AZ/Nev. because of the endless hyper inflation there. His builder told him that had he arrived 4-5 years earlier that same house would be 30% less. Because contractor's are scrambling to fill the void and suppliers are demanding & getting paid a premium. Hell Cali was even discussing an "EXIT" Tax on those moving out,not sure how far that got.

Much lower population though.  So on a per capita basis, those Zips and Rockets on top of the Buckeyes, probably add up.

Hmmm. If cities matter, why can’t Houston fill a stadium?

I realize you think you're being quite clever, but the point is that even in a population base of 13M people, the most popular brand in all of California and one of the most popular national brands that has ever existed, can barely outdraw Texas Tech which is located about 350 miles away from...well... anything, tells us all we need to know.  Are you suggesting that USC would draw better attendance were it located in Sacramento or Chico?

As I've stated, we all know that college football isn't as popular in California at is is in other regions.  The more interesting question is, why?

I've often heard it suggested that with good weather and nearby beaches, Californians just have so much other stuff to do, that watching college football isn't a priority.  And I'm completely willing to believe that, many parts of California are great with tons of opportunities splitting recreational time.  But does that sufficiently explain it?  Likely it's some combination of things but what are they?
