My wife really wants to go to Hawaii.  I had her look it up and we can do 3-4 trips to Playa del Carmen or Isla Mujeres for the same cost as one trip to Hawaii.  She doesn't want to go to Hawaii THAT bad.

We're planning to go in October. I think I've mentioned it that my wife's good friends (who are sisters) lost their dad last year. He was in the military and so they're going to have a ceremony to inter his remains at the cemetery in Honolulu.

So we're going to do a couple days in Honolulu with them, and then the two of us will split off for a few days on the big island.

I worry about Mexico... I don't want to travel anywhere that I won't feel safe leaving the resort. Usually my most enjoyable travels don't involve the word "resort" at all.

In Mexico it just depends on where you are.  We still hit Playa del Carmen every 2 or 3 years, we haven't had any issues at all there.

But I absolutely wouldn't cross the border in Texas.  None of those towns are safe.

This is going way back, but didn't you have an old Airstream that you restored?

Yup, had it until 2018.  Its last trip was to that beach as a matter of fact.  Here's a pic:

A bit of Guam history, but since I’m already here – earlier this week Highway 1, also named Marine Corps Drive, was closed off by traffic police through the main city for the annual Liberation Day Parade commemorating July 21 1944. On this date U.S. Marine Corps Forces landed on Guam and began recapturing the Island from over two years of occupation by the Imperial Japanese Army. (WII is locally referred to more often as The War In The Pacific.) A year later Guam formalized July 21st as an Island-wide holiday commemorated by a day off and the parade.

Wikipedia has a great account of the 50th anniversary of Liberation Day as described by retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Simmons, a veteran of the 1944 recapturing of Guam:

“On both sides of Marine Corps Drive there was an unbroken line of Guamanian families camping out on the curbside for the holiday. The families had staked out their places from which to view the goings and comings of the celebration and, most particularly, for the big parade which was to come on the 21st of July. This camping-out is not new; it is a custom that has grown big over the years. Most families had rigged some sort of bright-colored tent, fly or canopy. The unmistakable odor of barbecue was in the air. Military marching units included the Marines, the Navy, the Army, and the Guam National Guard, dressed out as jungle fighters. Early on there was an overflight by a string of Marine Harriers and helicopters. The Filipino and Chinese communities had costumed groups in the parade. There were also fearsome aborigine warriors from Fiji and the Southern Philippines, dragon dancers from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and a contingent of Native Americans. Marchers from the other Mariana islands, including Saipan, were present. The parade, scheduled for three hours, went on for six.”

The parade is held to this day. Locals camped out in the overnight tropic rains to claim prime roadside spots for watching the parade. Fortunately, the heavier weather was clear by sunrise, making for a breezy day of deep blue skies and ocean alike:

Here's a really old pic from another trip to the same beach.  This is when my buddy Bald Greg had a 1972 Winnebago and I had the 1963 Airstream.

Why are airstreams so expensive?

Higher quality materials, higher quality build.

And also, name-brand recognition.

But seriously, you don't see many white-box-brand 60-year-old RVs still on the road. But you see plenty of 50-70 year old Airstreams.  They're built really, really solidly.

they look pretty cool. Plus you get to blind all the other drivers on your way down the road.

Just like a polished Cybertruck!

Of course, when I see one of those, I would happily accept blindness just to be spared.

I polished that Airstream myself.  Twice.  That is some incredibly hard work, and so so dirty.
