I should mention the Palms Springs Air Museum is very worthwhile, even my wife liked it.

I tease about the weather in SoCal but I actually find San Diego to be quite nice.

At midday in August.

One thing that was rather astonishing was our drive back to SD.  I took a "slow route" around Hemet and Temecula.  The unexpected thing was the vast subdivisions in that area and a ton of new construction of single family homes.  My wife wondered where they all work, and if they were retired.  LA is about 90 miles west.  We didn't go through either downtown area, but the vast subdivisions were impressive, all built in the past few years it seemed, on tiny lots.

My wife had another diatribe about how she doesn't like SD.  She claimed there "isn't anything there of interest".
Nothing of interest?

Did you not take her to any breweries???

Assuming they're not working in/around those towns, or up in Riverside, most are probably working in San Diego County. Maybe not downtown SD, but there's a lot of employment to be had in north county. Most likely they're not commuting to LA/OC. In LA/OC we get a lot of folks that are a little closer like Corona, or for OC perhaps people from just across the mountains in Lake Elsinore as there's a road (Hwy 74) that directly links them.

But also remember that with the rise of WFH, they may not commute very often. For example at my work event in SD I was talking to one of our salespeople who I know is based in the Irvine office with me. I asked where he lived and he said "about 10 minutes from here", i.e. his commute from San Diego to our Irvine office would probably be close to an hour and a half, on a good day. But of course, he doesn't actually come into the office every day.

And this was common in our industry even before COVID. Salespeople are out in front of customers much of the time, and can do nearly everything they need to do connected remotely. So they only come in when there's a need. In my previous role, there were only two "peers" in SoCal, both of whom were already fully remote workers, and my boss lived in Boston... So I wasn't coming in every day either. I could do what I needed from home, and frequently did.

And this has only grown since.

I did not, we had very limited time there not already taken for her part of the visit, the graduation and party soaked up a full day.  Our first night after we arrived the family went to some very very "commercial" and mundane "Mexican" restaurant in a mall, it was so forgettable I forgot about it until now.  Then we had lunch with part of the family the next day, then the graduation affair.  I had zero control over events (and didn't want any).  Then we left for PS where I did have control.  I found one "Mexican" place there for lunch, every diner was "Mexican", I thought it could be good, but it too was mediocre.

A few years back I did find a good Mexican place in Carlsbad, but we weren't staying up north this time.

Our local "Mexican" places are far better and cheaper.

My wife is not a big fan of beer, she likes 420 and even PBR at times, but drinks it rarely.  I bought some Corona in PS because she likes it.

I realize when we travel I generally am "in charge", able to do what I want, my wife of course makes requests and I try and fit them in, it's usually not hard.  When going to a graduation out there, for two days someone else is "calling the shots", where we eat, how we spend time, and it's just not what I prefer, so I get in kind of a bad mood as a result.  The previous graduation was much worse, we were there four days following around with little "personal time".  This time was two days before we went to PS.

I had this notion that 90% of Mexican places in SoCal would be really good, but that isn't the case at all.

I'm pretty much always in charge of travel stuff. My wife is very trusting of me.

My wife is TOO trusting of me, but if I err, which happens, she's not critical, we talk it over and try to avoid the same thing again.  It works.

I have a somewhat similar situation coming up end of August, a very good friend of hers is having his 90th birthday, and hosting some "party" at his condo overlooking the fireworks thing up there.  Fortunately, my step son has taken over many of the arrangements and he's very good at it, and it's a smaller group overall and I know most of them.  I dislike "parties" with 30+ people where I know maybe 10.

This very good friend of hers I personally find exceptionally annoying and wish to avoid, but with ~ten people around it won't be hard, I can smile and chuckle and seem agreeable to whatever.  Our other friends are coming over from France and it's good to see them, he was my wife's boss back when and President of the company, neat guy.  So, net, it should be OK.

Oddly enough, I'm not a fan of fireworks displays.  I may make some comment about how they are "chemicals" and pollution as this "very good friend" is your typical hyperliberal without knowing much of anything about anything.  He is of Jewish decent and after Trump was elected in '16 told me he expected Trump to expel all the Jews from the US.  I asked him if that would include Trump's daughter?

I probably won't mention chemicals though, but I might depending.

you may be a bit spoiled by your luxury of making your own choices the past few years and doing as you please
but if it amuses you to poke hyperliberals, I say enjoy yourself !

He's more of a "brainless liberal", in my opinion.  He visited here a while back and we walked by a Chick-Fil-A and he went into a tirade, completely unneeded, I hadn't said anything, we didn't dine there, just walked by.  He's the kind who wants everyone to know his opinions and he doesn't know much of anything about anything. He goes off on topics often, and nobody around cares.

Anyway, we rarely see him.
