I always enjoyed the mountainous stretch of 24/75 coming and out of Chattanooga.
There is a stretch in Tennessee just before KY that is interesting, but I've driving it often, once or twice before I-75 was opened.  I always think of Sherman when we drive south of Chattanooga.

The only way to get through Atlanta with minimal pain is to avoid rush hour.

Rush hour is between 5 AM and midnight.

You ever try 285 to get around it?

Driving across Kansas is far superior to driving across Atlanta.

I285 is often as bad a mess as going through town, but if there is no accident or construction (there is), it can be an option midday.  For us, there isn't a "going around" option of course.

The northern stretch of I-285 is really bad, but the western part is probably the best option for getting by Atlanta midday.

For some reason, jamming two 12 lane freeways down to one isn't working well in town (the Connector they call it).  We exit just before the connector on 14th street.  We go up to Costco north on I-75 and return the same way.  I know some alternative routes now if I-75 is jammed.

I-85 outside the perimeter (285) is really bad, it gets better inside until you reach near the Connector at Brookwood interchange.  There aren't even PLANS to fix any of this except that northern Arc (there is a plan for that).

I've done that alternate route from Caryville TN up to the KY state line, and it's great. Particularly that part down in the river gorge, with the train tracks milling about.

Hawaii yesterday,  We're headed there in December for two weeks, my wife wants to go every other year, I'm hoping the volcano remains active so we can see it at night.  This is about a 90 mile drive from where we stay.

I've seen lava flows but nothing like this in the past.

The whole thing is worth driving of course, but I like the southern stretch below Asheville the best.  The viaduct around Grandfather Mountain is famous and interesting as well.  This was the last stretch completed because of the mountain.  The town of Franklin, NC has some interesting aspects and a very good restaurant we discovered.

That's actually a fun little town. We spent three days there before a cruise.
