There is very little crime in the Netherlands. Portugal is right up there with them.

A Lavish Encounter With a Bowlus Volterra Luxury Travel Trailer (motortrend.com)

We rounded the corner and there it was. Behold, the Bowlus Volterra in all its polished glory beckoned us, lowly us, for a one-night stay. We politely obliged and settled in for the night, trying to act like staying in a $310,000 luxury travel trailer was normal, perfectly normal. We promptly excused ourselves to go buy some lotto tickets, promising that if we won the jackpot, the first thing we would buy was a Bowlus Volterra. We meant it.

That's a beautiful trailer.  However, $300,000 plus, and you still only get a single bed...

If I'm spending $300K on a trailer, you think I'm letting the kids inside that thing? Nah, that's for me and ONE other person.

Crime is another big issue, at least in France.  If you own a house, you have to have high walls around it, all of it, and they do.  The police are uninterested in property crimes, they treat you like a criminal if you report one.  We had a large group of French retirees over to Cincy and some of them we knew visited our house and marveled that we had no fence, and asked how that could be?  I looked at the dude and said "Everyone is armed", which was not really true.  Go into a suburban area near Paris or Lyon and you'll see what I mean.

Had no idea crime was so prevalent in greater France; a little surprised because what you’re referencing about policing and property walls is not the case I remember for my time spent in France’s bordering nations. But maybe the rest of Western Europe is slowly trending this way? Those two observations – indifferent policing and especially the property walls – are hallmarks of non-First World nations where the public is resigned to crime and corruption.

Whenever I go into Mexico or further into former Soviet Blocs the property walls (behind which are often mean dogs) is the first major neighborhood difference I notice. All along the sidewalks and roadways Gates, Bars, and Walls block point-blank view and access to driveways and residences.

For example, two street scenes from one of Tijuana’s nicer neighborhoods near the Pacific Coast:

The walls in France generally are higher than a man's head.  And then some.  And of course property crime in Paris directed at tourists is quite high.  The police ignore it.  The perps often use young females, "gypsies" or "rums", to distract you with something while they filch your wallet.

Tis best to walk quickly with purpose and seem to know where you're going and dress as far as possible like a local.

Oh agreed, but there are still solely single beds available.

Edit: Ah I see this might need clarification.  I'm referring to the SIZE of the bed.  There are 2 single (or twin) beds aft, and amidships there are two mini-dinettes that would convert to something slightly smaller than a twin.

So no matter who you are, the largest bed available to you, is a twin.

That is equal of course to 300 stays at a $1,000 per night hotel.  I know what my wife would say.

Even worse because on the trailer you have to pay for storage, maintenance, upkeep.  If you want it to stay that highly polished, and you don't plan to do the work yourself, then for a trailer that size you're looking at $5,000-$6,000 per year just to maintain that gleam.

And since I've polished a trailer that size, several times, I can assure you that you don't want to do that work.

Yup.  I see the usual 2500s pulling some massive travel trailer and figure they are getting 10-12 mpg, same with a motor home.  Then they are towing some midget car usually.  I'll just stay in a hotel.

My wife notes it would mean she'd be cooking and cleaning as if she were at home.

Our hotel in Tokyo is $861 per, but I managed to use points.  As if.

A cruise with the uprated balcony suite runs about $900 per night, not including excursions (tours) which get pricey.

A "normal" driving trip runs maybe $250-300 a day for a decent hotel, food, and gas for two people.

Travel is expensive unless you use rail and hostels etc.

Ahh...

So even MORE nope from me. I'm 2" taller than a twin bed is long...

Heading out tomorrow. Going to Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, St. Thomas, San Juan and Amber Cove in the DR.  Nice little 8 day cruise.

I'm guessing none of us are in the market for such a travel trailer.
