A problem I've always had is simply being listened to, somehow, work, my wife, family, etc.  I'll say "I'd like to do X", maybe too softly?  Then I get mostly ignored, some lip service perhaps.  I might need to be more emphatic, which I tend not to be, so maybe folks think "OK, but he's really not meaning it".

Oddly enough, my wife thinks I have some supernatural ability to select places to dine.  It's pretty easy in France, and not that hard here either.

I noticed fairly often at work in some meeting I'd note something I thought relevant, then a lot of discussion ensues, then "the boss" says what I said earlier as if it's his or her insight.  I got used to it, and didn't much care in the last few years.  I'd often sit in meetings saying nothing at all unless asked something.  Nearly all meetings were to spend time on something rather than doing something about the issue anyway.

I told my wife after this that I was going to be more forceful in declining something in the future, she said that was OK, she thought I'd enjoy the restaurant experience.  I REALLY didn't want to go, and asked her several times to cancel or modify the reservation.  She said it was too late, or something like that.

The last time I attended something highly rated that I HATED was seeing Hamilton.  I agreed to go figuring it would be at least OK.

I would not have gone to that A-M place. I'd let my wife go it alone even, which she would not. My wife is very frugal, which is good. Anyway,

I know it sounds mean, but if I didn't enjoy it, there is no way for her to enjoy it - even if she liked it.

We tend to avoid the Mich * restaurants. Been disappointed too many times.

We've gone to one not too far from us that got a one star recently, and we both like it quite a bit.  It's $110 per person, pre fixe, plus wine, so it's not cheap.

I did everything short of saying "I am NOT going".  She told me later she really wanted me to go and semi-apologized.  She should have gone with her daughter and they probably would have enjoyed it a lot more.

There is another one star that is moving to quite near us, apparently, we'll try it.  On the whole, I'm delighted to dine at Fox Bros., or Hattie B's, or any number of other places in walking distance.

As for A-M, I had some fun writing reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor.

Oddly enough, the latter wouldn't allow me to use the term "pretentious" in my title.

This is typical of what we had at A-M.

And I appreciate elegant plating, and I often prefer a lot of different "bites" to one main meal.  But I found a limit to this.  And obviously the real "cognoscenti" turn their nose up at my preference, I don't care.

Lazy Betty isn't open here yet, I may stroll by and check how the refurb is going today.

I'll stick with my ribeye grilled on my deck with a baked potato on the side eaten on my couch with an ice cold beer. 5 Michelin stars by my count.

The nice thing about steak is "we" can all fix a steak dinner about as good, if not better, than any restaurant, and a lot cheaper.  I think my "basic meals" are about as good as any retaurant's.  But we enjoy dining out a fair bit, and it's usually something I really can't fix at home.

But steak, pork chops, spaghetti, most chicken, I can do pretty well, and almost never order out.

This may not be your cup of tea, but we like it, quite a bit, which is why the "A-M' experience was so ... weird.

This is not a thing I'd try and fix at home.    I'm not even sure what it is, but I'd eat it.

Separately, we had news of three local spots closing down because their rent was raised.  They were popular places, I'm not sure of the excuse.

My area of the country is meat & taters
those fancy white tablecloth joints die quick deaths
especially if the prices are high

When my kids left for college, I'd fix spaghetti on Monday and eat it all week until Friday.  My wife kids me about that.  I'd be content to do it now too, but she says she needs variation.

I do think a fair bit of "dining out" is "for show".  I took her to a "famous" (renowned?) steakhouse here called Bones.  It seemed to me to be much more about "being seen" than the steak.  The steaks were fine, it's just apparently not the Point of it.

Movers and shakers, etc., and wannabes, more of the latter.

So, someone asked a good question, why travel?  Is it just "something to do"?  Do you enjoy it?  Is it interesting?  Good questions, I think, with different answers for different folks (duh).

My least favorite aspect is "checking boxes", e.g., "We're in Paris, we need to see the Eifel Tower (etc.)", check, Notre Dame (check), and so forth.  I've never been in the Louvre, don't really intend to go, box unchecked.

My most favorite is visiting with locals, and the food (usually).  You can better get a feel of a place with locals.  We spent two weeks in Copenhagen, we both really liked that, not just the city, but the unhurried pace that this much time affords.

I'm interested in military history so I'll often make a side trip for that reason.  I find the terrain of battlefields is a lot different in person than on maps in photos.  (Waterloo terrain was significantly altered anyway.)  And museums of that ilk interest me, if not so much my wife.  We toured the Maginot Line, it's clearly impressive.  We both like wine and wine tours can be interesting.

Then of course there are scenic parts, we both enjoyed Zion for example.  I can sit at my computer and see a lot of this stuff but it makes me want to see them in person.

Then there is "going to the beach", somewhere just to relax and take it easy.  I think this is more a thing for folks still working.  I can relax pretty well here at home without all the trouble.

It obviously comes down to choices, do you want to play golf at the same course over and over and over?  Maybe so.  Eat the same set of meals all the time?  Fine.  Listen to the same music, see the same scenes, are you missing out not traveling?  Up to you.
