Looks nice enough, but it is going to be rather hot today.  Already is.  I can see our unit!

So the Mrs. and I got back from a long trip to South Korea last night. I have many, many thoughts that will take a while to fully comprehend. But if one picture summed up the weather during our time, it's this one. Even the pictographs were sweating.

I stumbled across this, it's not bad, a bit dated in spots:

Atlanta – Travel guide at Wikivoyage

This site could be useful for other cities you may visit.

Amtrak's next-generation of rail cars is set to roll out to even more passengers than originally planned.

The U.S. rail carrier is ordering 10 more of its new Amtrak Airo trainsets to meet surging passenger demand, the rail carrier announced Monday.

The order brings Amtrak to 83 Amtrak Airo trains, which are set to debut in 2026 along various routes in the Northeast, spanning from Toronto to Miami.

"We're thrilled to satisfy the soaring demand for train travel with new state-of-the-art, American-made equipment that ensures the highest standards of comfort, service and amenities," Amtrak president Roger Harris said in a statement. "These new trainsets will help us get people where they need to go while reducing road and air congestion, creating jobs and supporting the American economy."

Passenger demand for rail travel has exceeded its expectations, according to Amtrak. In a CNBC interview on Monday, Harris said the rail carrier has seen increased ridership this summer as overall travel demand has grown.

In August, ridership along the Northeast Corridor — the carrier's busiest railroad — increased 12% from 2019, according to CNBC, despite experiencing mounting delays this summer caused largely by sweltering weather, an aging fleet and nationwide reconstruction projects.

"There's a renewed interest in rail," Harris said on CNBC.

The new trains are part of a multi-billion dollar project to upgrade Amtrak's existing infrastructure. Amtrak directly received $22 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which passed Congress in 2021. The act earmarked a total of $66 billion for freight and rail. The remaining $44 billion went toward the Federal Rail Administration for various passenger and freight upgrades, such as renovations for the Northeast Corridor's tunnels and bridges.

Some preliminary thoughts:

Jet lag has been kicking my ass ever since returning from Korea last Friday. Westbound the time change (10 hours going straight across the Date Line, 14 hours ahead from CDT to KST) was manageable, but coming back has been a bear. I feel like I've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson in his prime.

This was both my wife and I's first trip to Asia. The biggest thing about this trip is that it removed a lot of mystery from Korea. Until we got out of customs at the Incheon Airport, Korea had always been this faraway place that almost had a mystical quality about it. As an adoptee, her relationship with Korea had always been, at minimum, complicated. Over the next two weeks, it was very eye opening to see Koreans doing normal things, and living life as normally as one can in a society that is as stratified as modern Korea is.

Metropolitan Seoul has 26 million people living at densities that makes New York look like Green Acres.

I have never seen so much black hair in one place as I did in a subway car during rush hour.

KBO baseball is a blast.

Oof. The good news is you should be on the tail end of the jet lag.

I always laugh at people who complain about how daylight savings time just completely screws up their internal clock. Yeah, try going to Asia for a week, having to perform during business meetings all day when your body thinks it should be asleep, then coming back and spending the next week reversed. You'll look at the daylight 1 hr time change in a whole new light lol.

Korea I haven't been to. I'd say Japan is higher on my list, but after I cross that one off, perhaps one day I'll make it to Korea. Unfortunately when I was heading over there for work, I never had cause to make it to either place.

I'm looking at a cruise around Japan with one stop in SK.  The problem is the flight out (and back).  One plan is to stop in Hawaii for a few days and then Tokyo.

We almost did that one time. Turkish Airlines was the cheapest way to get to Rome, but we would have had to go through Istanbul first. F that.

We did Turkish coming home from Istanbul to ATL.  That actually wasn't as bad as I expected.  I think I slept a bit, which is rare for me on a plane.  We now have Delta to NYC then Gatwick for our next cruise.  The cruise line sets us up with flights, in the back, for $1100, both of us.  I can take some pain for that deal.  NYC to Gatwick is not that bad.
