Expansion would be more likely.

I like the 2 airport model better, but probably not as efficient

There isn't much room down there, though the current notion is to build a sixth runway.  And of course another runway may help with plane traffic but it doesn't help with gates/security lines/parking/etc.

We dropped off my crazy Turkish friend yesterday at 6 PM at the International terminal.  It used to be there was nobody there, generally speaking, now it's a complete mess.  It took us an hour and a half, much of which was getting through traffic coming back.  I knew it would be bad, I suggested he use MARTA but he wanted to be dropped off, so I did.  We're headed to Vancouver next week via Toronto, we'll take MARTA.

Any second airport would be 50 miles north of downtown and you would have to have a rail connection.

It depends. ORD and MDW work pretty well in Chicago. SW dominates MDW. AA and UA generally dominate ORD.

Ohare has a ton of airlines.

Orlando is MCO because at the time the airfield was built, it was named McCoy Air Force Base.

ORL is in Paris.

Paine Field in Everett is going to be a smashing success because it's a bear to drive to SeaTac at most hours of the day from anywhere north of the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

There was much discussion in the late 80s and early 90s about building a new MSP airport out in either Coates or as a substantial addition to the Anoka Airport in Blaine. This discussion was happening at the same time that Dick Ames was getting rich doing the dirtwork for the new Denver airport. In hindsight, he may have been the one driving the discussion. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, Northwest Airlines shot that idea down, and MSP has been building on the current footprint ever since.

I think intercity high speed rail has major issues in the US, Brightline in Florida might work OK, it's not quite HSR in my view.  MARTA works reasonably well despite the criticism and the fact the full plan was never built ($$$).  They "could" extend MARTA from its ending point to where the second airport would be, in fact, they would have to do it.  Right now, the land is "woods", which is fine with me to leave it be.

It could make more sense, maybe, to build up an airport in some nearby city, Columbus/Chattanooga/Augusta/Bham.  Or build one designed for changing planes entirely somewhere in the SE.  I dunno if that would be practicable.  It would be in the sticks.  There is a civil aviation airport in Dekalb now that handles private jets, but again, no room around it.  I don't think there is a viable solution really.

Is the international terminal connected to the rest of the terminal by tram? I seem to recall that the east end of Hartsfield was underutilized.

Rail connections are very important in places where driving shouldn't be done, like Chicago, Washington, and San Francisco.

Yes, the "Plane Train" connects everything, but if you aren't throught security, you have to take a bus.  The east end, the International Terminal, USED to be underutilized, but now it's a flat mess, the infrastructure is not available to support it, parking is always full causing a traffic jam, and only two lanes go to the departure level.  I used to love using it when nobody was there, often there would be more gate agents than passengers, no longer.  And it only has 11 gates.

That is certainly not up to snuff for a large international airport.

I think folks like us who couldn't travel for about 18 months are making up for lost time, so everything is crunched today, all of it, security lines, rental cars, gate agents, full planes, I'm more amazed it works as well as it does than anything.

We're lucky not to have to drive much, my wife drives to pilates and that is problematic but only 3 miles or so.  I tend to forget how bad traffic is until I have to drive someone to the airport.  It's a $35 taxi fare, more for Lyft/Uber most of the time.  We pay $0.70 per ride on MARTA which takes about 25 minutes to walk to a station and then 25 minutes to the airport.  My wife doesn't care for it, but ....

We take the taxi if we're headed to Europe and have a ton of luggage.

Expanding MARTA would help, but the outer counties don't want it, and it's expensive to build more of course.

Since, I live West, I am almost always flying east when I go, I try my best to get the red eye.  Generally SkyHarbor isn't too bad that time of night.

Coming back from my last trip last saturday arriving in mid-afternoon was a shit-show.  Can't remember the last time I saw it that busy. But then I generally don't fly on a Saturday.
