I think for a younger person, such a hectic trip can be useful.  I agree any major European city needs at least a week to scratch the surface.  And the older you are, the more down time you will need of course.
If you're going to do that many countries in that short of time, I would do a cruise. At least you don't have to unpack and pack all the time.

That is how we handle it of course.  We're doing one in October around the British isles, it's pretty hectic, one "day at sea".  Were we younger, we'd hoof it on our own.

We're both fine with Norwegian as a cruise line.

My wife and daughter are 7 days into a 12 day trip in Europe that will take them through Ireland, Germany, Poland, The Czech Republic, and Austria.  After talking to them this evening I think they are both ready to come home.  It’s an educational trip through the school system and everything is busy and on a schedule.

They are finding out a trip and a vacation aren’t necessarily the same thing.  The one place my wife really wanted to visit was Auschwitz but my daughter got a bug or something and was throwing up all day so they had to sit that one out yesterday.  She is better now and they were in Prague today.  They both sound exhausted. Lol.
It took us two weeks to go through part of the northern half of Italy. Granted, I was ready to leave after a week in Rome.

A week in Rome is probably enough. Vatican one day. Palatine Hill maybe 2 days. Lots to see there. Pantheon of course, plus various other sites that are worthy. "Cat temple", aqueducts, etc.

Also, lots of good food to explore.

Our first time there we were in a bit of a hurry, so we went back again. We're all good now.

Civitavecchia is a cool city to do a cruise out of.

I like to have a few days interspersed to "do nothing", which means have no plan, just walk around and see things.  I like being spontaneous when I plan ahead for it.

To be fair, we packed a LOT into our week in Rome on our honeymoon.

The main event was going to the night Mass with Papa Frankie on Christmas Eve in St. Peter's. The atmosphere was like a super-reverent but high stakes football match. We waited in line with the family of a seminarian from North Dakota (tall English speakers tend to attract other English speakers), and were seated inside the basilica with a bunch of Brazilians.

St. Paul's Outside the Walls was my favorite of the papal basilicas.

We went to the Vatican Museums while there over Christmas 2021. Attendance at the time was capacity limited by COVID. And if the place was that busy while capacity-constrained, I don't want to be within a country mile of there in August with no restrictions on attendance.

Cacio e pepe in Rome was fantastic, and, despite it's simplicity, is something that the Mrs. and I have been utterly unable to replicate back stateside.

We tend to have a fairly loose schedule when we travel. If there are big-ticket events, schedule for that, but we don't want to be tied to an airtight schedule.

Our notion is to spot check some city for a day or three and assess whether to return later for 5-9 days etc.  I have Vienna on my short list.  One obvious thing about retirement is one doesn't worry about missing work, same with having a condo, and no pets.  Having a large airport nearby also helps.

I'm looking hard at Asia now, the travel distance is a "feature" of course.

I highly recommend this company for tours. 4-6 people maximum and you do not wait in any lines, ever.

The Vatican was effing crazy when we were there in 2018.

I won't say that we can replicate cacio e pepe perfectly, but we've practiced quite a bit and can do fairly well.

  • You absolutely HAVE to have the right super starchy pasta. We've never found grocery store pasta that works. We have an Italian market near my wife's office that she goes to for pasta. Even then, we might want to search for even more starchy pasta.
  • You don't want to cook it in a big ol' pot of water like we all grew up doing with pasta. Cook it in JUST enough water to cook and maybe have a cup of reserved water so that there's enough starch to emulsify the sauce. If you use too much water, you'll dilute the starch and it will never emulsify.

If you enjoy anchovies, I also recommend trying pasta burro e alici, which is simple to make and far richer than you'd think for a 3-ingredient dish.

I like traveling cheaply.
I'm visiting FL and GA to see family and friends over about 10 days.
One-way flights were cheaper this time (it's seems to flip-flop each year), so I got:
PHX to ATL for $105
5 day car rental for $106
ORL to PHX for $120
.
Orlando is MCO for some reason, but it's ORL in my mind.
The fun part is that probably half the other people in my first flight paid more for their seat than I have for my whole trip.  NO frequent flyer miles, no clubs, no groups.
