Sumela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Theotokos located at Karadağ (Greek: Sou Melá, meaning "Black Mountain") within the Pontic Mountains, in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey.

Nestled in a steep cliff at an altitude of about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) facing the Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015 the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It reopened to tourists 25 May 2019. The monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon.

OK, I did not take this photo, but it's close to showing our journey (Dubai where we started would be out of frame lower right).  I was surprised how wide the area of the Nile is with agriculture even pretty far upstream where we took the bus ride.  We had ported in Safaga, Egypt a bit south of the Gulf of Suez and the bus went west across some mountains and then agricultural plains with the city of Qena and New Qena and then Luxor.  Now I realize that the area isn't that wide, Qena is on the Nile and is Luxor, we were riding up the Nile (south) instead of going further west.  Huh.

I was happy my wife got out of that church before our group left.  We were late getting back from Petra.  And we did not have our passports.

It costs $1519 on Delta to fly to Marseille.  It costs $1,703 to get to Paris, same airline.

To get to Marseille, you fly through Paris.

It costs $1.,695 to fly to Nice nonstop from here, also on Delta.

Years back, I drove across the Sierra north of Yosemite through Sonora Pass on a road that had 26% grades.

The unforgettable road to Sonora Pass in California (dangerousroads.org)

It wasn't dangerous, but I recall not being able to see the road at times as the car crested a rise, I had to pull myself up on the steering wheel to look over the hood.  In places, it was just pavement over a rock surface with no grading effort at all.

A few places I've see that we really really liked:

Copenhagen
Sancerre (FR)
Zion NP

Lyon (FR)
Chamonix (FR)
Bayuex (FR)

Vancouver, BC (daughter lives there)
Mauna Kea (the summit is crazy)
Volcano NP

I've yet to see Asia, the Orient part, though I've been on five continents now, technically.

Places I don't like include Pigeon Forge, TN and Myrtle Beach, SC and I'd add New Orleans, which is not the opinion of many here.  I really don't want to go back ever.
