The Big Island is roughly 100 miles across in both directions.  The "Saddle Road" connects the sunniers western side with Hilo in the east (which looks more like what you think of as Hawaii).  It passes between the two tall volcanoes and on a clear day gives spectacular views.  It reaches an elevation over 6,600 feet.  It was fairly recently improved from more of a cart path to a nice two lane highway.

It appears highly likely it's going to be cut in a few days.  It traverses an area of "fresh" lava flows from the last eruption of Mauna Loa (some 38 years past).  The area is amazingly desolate.

You ever drive the South Road to Hana on Maui?

It was a cart path, and extremely scary.

Nope, I've driven the old highway in sections on the east coast of Hawaii and it's bad.  The old Saddle Road wasn't scary at all, just really bad, narrow and potholed to pieces.  It didn't have any steep drop offs anywhere, it's in the middle of the island.
