We spent 3 days in Savannah, a city I had visited but never for any amount of time.  Was interesting, would do it again.   This photo is for badger, I chuckled when I saw it, "Man taming nature" etc.:



What could go wrong?  Savannah is a fair sized port.  One can have lunch by the river and look UP and see a very large cargo ship going up the river.  It's pretty amazing really.

I did not know this.



This is how the old part of the city looks pretty much, a lot of live oaks, planned squares surrounded by old houses.

Factor's Walk, factors was the term for cotton merchants.



River Walk, looking upstream towards the port.  They have a newly opened development up that way that is impressive.  Open 9 months back at a cost of $375 million, I was told.  It's an old Georgia Power plant redone extensively as a hotel and restaurants and bars.  They have a dinosaur thingee inside.

As i recall, OAM once noted and I agree,  a lot of interesting pirate history in Savannah.    Not nearly as glamorous or monied as Charleston, but a very interesting city nonetheless.

It gets a bit lost as a place to visit nationally, I think, and I find it overall worth visiting.  Food, entertainment, history, weather (this time of year anyway), walkability ...

Our hotel had a rooftop bar that was pretty neat, overlooking the river and downtown.

We were there a few years back and took a couple of the bus tours. The tour guides on both buses, brought up Sherman a lot. The one lady would mention his name and then spit into a trash can. It was hilarious.

Sherman of course spared the place, as it surrended to him without a fight.  It had minimal value to the southern war effort at that time, Fort Pulaski had been in Federal hands for some time by then.  Sherman's march to the sea was a very creative IMHO strategem.  Hood took the remainder of his army in the opposite direction.

Correct, and I reminded the lady that spit into the bucket of the fact that Sherman spared the city.

I did take some time to mess with her though. About halfway through the tour, the bus stopped at a spot were we could get off, use the facilities and pick up some snacks and drinks. I was the last one off the bus and so I stopped to talk with the tour guide. I told her that I was a descendent of Sherman and her jaw about hit the floor. She began to apologize and say that it was just part of her schtick.  I finally told her that I was just messing with her and we both had a laugh about it. She was a very good sport and made the tour a lot of fun.

At the end of the tour, the bus made a stop at the south end of town to drop off people that had gotten on there. From there we headed across town to drop the rest of us off. On that final leg, the tour guide turned on some music for the drive. Being as the rest of us were a group from Ohio, we requested Hang On Sloopy to be played. She didn't have that song, but I did on my phone. So we connected my phone to the bus sound system and were driving through the heart of Savannah playing it over the loud speakers. It was fun to watch many of the people walking near us join in with O-H-I-O chant. The bus driver was amazed and asked what that was about and said that she would add the song to her list of songs to play whenever there were groups from Ohio.

At the end of the tour, she received some pretty good tips.
