Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key now has 5 wins over AP Top 25 ranked opponents at Georgia Tech. He's coached 22 games at Georgia Tech.

Florida State's head coach Mike Norvell has 4 wins over AP Top 25 ranked opponents at Florida State. He's coached 49 games at Florida State.

Yikes.
I think that relies on the “where they were ranked at the time metric,” which is useless and bad.

Not that FSU losing isn’t funny as hell, but that’s a dumb way to measure things.

It is bad, I agree, perhaps not entirely useless, as teams ranked at the time could be ranked post season, at least more often than unranked teams.  I think in this case, their wins over "ranked teams" are not really very impressive.

GT has been upset-minded in ACC play against Top 25 teams. The Yellow Jackets knocked off two ranked ACC opponents — at Miami and vs. North Carolina — in 2023. In 2022, Georgia Tech won games against ranked opponents at UNC and Pittsburgh.

GT is a sleeping giant IMO, which is why they are on my list for future B1G expansion to 24.

Fertile recruiting grounds, large city, great academics.

So the 2022 wins were relatively good, as both teams won 9 games (in a soft ACC division, but you get credit)

Last year they beat 7-6 Miami and 8-5 UNC. And you had FSU beating 9-4 Clemson, but not getting a ranked win because they played at the wrong time.

It’s just sort of silly. I’d like to look back at some computer rankings for that kind of thing. They’re a better indicator of strength. Maybe adjust up to top-20 and go from there.

I think that last one will always keep them sleeping, though I’d like them as a mid-conference add.

I'm thinking we let this stream run through Friday, and then @MaximumSam can start a new one when he wakes up before the rest of us on Saturday.

We have 5 B1G games on Thursday and Friday.

I think GT is a "sleeping midrange half decent program that should make a bowl game every other year or so".  If they are better than that, somebody else will hire their coach away, and they start over.  They have pretty weak student and faculty/administration support.  They have an ancient falling down stadium, though they are upgrading part of it, finally.  They have mediocre facilities for training etc.  They are obviously not currently on any 5 star short lists.

They beat FSU, barely, and played them pretty much even the whole game after the first drive.  It's a nice win for them.  They may end up 8-4.

Their facilities would get a nice boost if their revenue increased by a factor of two.

I suspect their revenue is heavily dependent on TV, and they are an ACC team.

With some upgrades, though, they might match Purdue.  Maybe.
