I'm thinking we let this stream run through Friday, and then @MaximumSam can start a new one when he wakes up before the rest of us on Saturday.
Ya he sets his alarm for 6:00 am like he's 8 and it's Christmas morning - which of course to us it is. And Michigan's getting coal in their sock this season along with more sanctions :111:

Their facilities would get a nice boost if their revenue increased by a factor of two.
Still a nerd school. And really high in the nerd rankings.

I suspect their revenue is heavily dependent on TV, and they are an ACC team.

With some upgrades, though, they might match Purdue.  Maybe.
This is it, for me. I've often compared the two schools. GT is like Purdue, but without the basketball success.

  • Not even remotely the top football school in the state, and surrounded by mega programs in nearby states that can come in to their geo and recruit in-state kids away.
  • Not even close to the top fan / rooting interest in the state. The fans of the school are either alumni or close family of alumni. When I lived in Marietta, I saw it constantly. EVERYONE was a Dawg fan. Nobody even paid attention to GT unless they went there. If GT was in the B1G it would be great for Atlanta alumni of other B1G schools, but it would be like Northwestern--every home game is actually an away game.
  • Biggest football success was when they zigged while others zagged. For GT it was when they ran option while everyone else was built to defend traditional offenses. For Purdue it was the early Tiller years when they ran spread while the conference was still built to defend three yards and a cloud of dust.
  • Great academics for both... But we all know academics aren't moving the needle.

I'm not saying I hate the idea of trying to get them into the conference. But they're nothing more than a Purdue that happens to be in the middle of a major media market. Trying to make them into more than that is like fetch; it's never going to happen.

Same.

I'm thinking attendance will be poor for this one too.

Florida State and Miami were able to overcome those things.

Two Badgers.

Leaving Terry Glenn off of that list is frankly ridiculous.

My neighbor gave me a tour of Tech a couple years back, it was impressive relative to what I remember from 1975 (when it was a dump).  The Olympics really provided the campus with a lot of new stuff.  Enrollment is way up from where it was, nearly 40,000 total.  The campus has come across the freeway to an extent, called Tech Square.

Some students are pretty fervent about athletics, but most are, well, nerds.  Over a third are Asian, they don't care about sports.

Could they really become what FSU once was?  Or Miami?  It's possible, I think it unlikely.  Little administration support, relatively little student support, and for no, not enough money.  If the current coach continues to succeed, he'll get poached.  His salary now is $2.8 million.  What does Kirby make?  More.

True. I just don't think GT ever will.

Coaches didn't move around nearly as much circa 1990, as I recall.  A good coach would stay put, usually, for a while, even at some lesser program that hit success.  Imagine Tech goes 10-3 this year and 10-4 next year, is Key likely to stay put, even with a major raise?  I don't think so.  We all know how key a coach is in CFB (ha).

Now programs are desparate if they want to be elite.  Some say the Florida coach is at risk, maybe he's not, but if Florida is 8-5 next year ...

How long was Bobby Bowden at FSU?  A while, and nobody apparently came calling.  I suspect these days he would have been poached after 4 seasons there.

FSU is a banger of a party school with a lot of coeds who are both attractive and … messy.

Miami rose when the world was smaller, when leaving South Florida was a much different experience. They also, in the words of an annoying but not wrong alum, captured the imagination of black America on the football front.

Tech ain’t doing that. Which is fine. Plenty of nerd schools find a good level.

I have expressed a desire to drop Tech from our schedule before.  It's unlikely, to say the least, but it's one OOC game that isn't much of a thing.  Last year it was UGA's ONLY OOC game worth spit after the series with Oklahoma was cancelled at the last minute.  And it wasn't worth much spit.  I'd rather be playing Clemson and Ohio State, or somebody semi-relevant anyway.  Maybe if Tech were a more consistent 8-4 program, it wouldn't be as bad.  And maybe they will get there.

I suspect they will do fairly well with Key and then he'll get poached (even though he's an alum).  If he doesn't do well, he won't get poached.  Then Tech will be back to trying to sneak into a bowl game.

I looked up Bowden's record at FSU.  I think they were indy back then, but playing a solid slate usually.  He had pretty rapid success, a couple down seasons, but a lot of up seasons even before their Big Run.
