not really. Jeem's defenses weren't atrocious vs everyone.
I meant the other side of the ball, offensive play calling, player decisions and such - and I was agreeing with you MFing him many times back then

Yes- typical overreaction to one game.

San Jose State returned damn near their entire offense from last year- including a very good and experienced QB, O-line and RBs.

USC has a ton of new faces on defense.  They shut down the run- except QB scrambles gave them fits.
The guess here is they will be pretty solid on D as they gain experience. Not world beaters mind you- but solid enough to support a team that can put up 45 on you during a commercial break.
Uh...no they didn't. San Jose State's RBs only had 17 carries total the entire game. For 146 rushing yards. Or you know, only 8.5 YPC. San Jose State's RBs only had 17 carries because they couldn't stick to the run- they had to abandon the run because well they are San Jose State and never had a prayer of slowing down USC's offense or STs from scoring for sustained periods. They were playing from behind the entire game. The QBs runs were virtually all scrambles (broken pass plays) and not designed QB runs or read options. And he only ran for 52 yards.

USC was playing San Jose State. SAN JOSE STATE. Let that sink in for a second....

at 8.5 YPC there's no need to abandon the run, you will score plenty

not when you're down by 21 in a flash in the 2nd half bc USC's return man scores a 97 yard TD and then you have to punt when you get the ball back and then USC immediately go right down the field and score a TD on offense.

remember...clock stoppage after 1st down rules changed. these games are going by faster. you don't have the luxury of sticking to the run and having the clock stopped if you pick up 1st downs anymore if you are behind....you HAVE to pass to catch up now.

I looked at the stats, midway, third-quarter, and San Jose State couldn’t do jack shit running the ball, except for the QB

They did a lot of their damage in Q4 when US C had substitute about damn near their entire first string defense.

I just know from experience of watching college football for years and years and years that teams actually cannot be judged by their first or second game.

I think 8.5 YPC is comparable to what one might expected passing on every down, especially if you're not much of a passing offense.  And if you go 3 and out passing, you're giving the ball back.

I respectfully disagree

I've watched some Husker teams that averaged 8 ypc.

I had forgotten about that new clock rule. Watching a bit yesterday at first was confusing. And then I remembered.

I haven't watched a game yet, but at first glance I don't like changing that rule.

I enjoy the games and the number of plays and don't mind watching another 20 minutes or so.

now, limiting commercials and replay breaks...........

I'm going to take a middle position here between @Mdot21 and @Honestbuckeye although, to be fair, I think what I'm about to say may be what Honest means:

If this was my team, Ohio State instead of USC, right now I'd be concerned but hopeful. I would see giving up 28 points and about 400 yards to SJSU as concerning but with so many new faces on D I'd be hopeful that maybe it was mostly growing pains and/or issues that can be fixed.

The week-0 game most interesting to me as an Ohio State fan was Notre Dame's Wipeout of Navy.

Looking at the stats to confirm what I saw of it a few things stand out:

First, fantastic performance by Hartman and the Irish passing game. They had 23 pass attempts with nothing bad: No INT's and no sacks. They had as many TD passes (4) as incomplete passes. Say what you will about Navy's defense, those stats would be good against air.

Second, their rushing stats aren't jump-off-the-page great, but notice that they did their damage without the benefit of any long plays.

Their feature back had 16 for 95 (5.9 avg) with one TD and as a team they had 32 for 191 (6.0 avg) with two TD's. Note, however, that Estime's long was only 13 and the team long was only 21. That tells me that they were getting 4-6 darn near every carry.

It appears that Notre Dame will be a tough out and a good rehearsal for the final game on the schedule.

Notre Dame's QB, Sam Hartman, transfer from Wake Forest, is very good.  The Irish have a chance to beat the Buckeyes and even make the playoffs.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.
