I wouldn't mind having a 1954 model, but I do think a Vette without that V8 sound would be unappealing even if the power numbers were the same or better.

We already have them with no manual option.

My guess is they will stick with hybrids for quite a few years.

I'm sure some want an old style traditional Corvette, which is one reason the used market is pricey.  I don't know of a downside to the current midengine configuration that is striking.

there are some that don't like the mid engine and won't/haven't bought one

most are ok with it once they drive one

Sure, but I don't know of a specific reason a person SHOULD dislike midengine.  I can see wanting a manual, fine, but midengine is pretty much all pro and no con except a more complex drivetrain.  Maybe I'm missing a rational reason to dislike midengine other than perhaps cost/complexity.

I don't think there's a technical downside that I can think of. There's a reason most supercars are mid-engine (weight distribution). And there's a reason why they introduced AWD (traction).

I can think of two possible reasons that previous Corvette fans may not like it though:

  • Tradition. I think the brand is one that very much respects tradition. I can see a portion of them not thinking it's a "real" Vette. That's why I posed the question though--I wonder how many who 5 years ago would say a mid-engine AWD version is not a "real" Vette have changed their tune on this?
  • Styling. For better or worse, mid-engine auto configurations tend to have very distinctive styling features, especially the large air ducts behind the door, that may for some people be unappealing. Whereas a traditional FR configuration me be something they're aesthetically comfortable with.

Ultimately, I think the Corvette sales numbers are going to be just fine with the change. And I think that if they went to a non-V8 configuration that they'd survive just fine too--if the performance numbers are there, they'll have buyers.

I can see preferring a V8.  The Current Mustang I4 has more power and torque than a lot of old "5.0" Mustangs, but it sounds like crap, to me.

But, rationally, I'd be fine with a V6.  The BMW in line six sounds pretty good to me.

I can see wanting a manual, fine, but the 8-speed dual clutch is pretty much all pro and no con except your right arm and left foot have nothing to do.

yup, all about traditional style
some don't like it when they change headlights and/or taillights either

This is why nearly every higher end sports car has gone to automatics, often dual clutch designs.  I prefer a manual, but frankly, at my age, driving an automatic now is OK with me.  I just like a bit more engagement.

The Hyundai automatic seems to be fine.  I don't care for the switch configuration, it's goofy to me.

I would prefer a midengine Corvette given a choice.
