Some 2020 Statistical Notes
« on: November 22, 2020, 10:02:25 PM »
General musings (ignoring teams who have played just 1 game):
Offense:
Colorado is the P5 program running the ball most:  52 att/gm
6 teams are completing over 70% of their passes, 5 are completing under 50%
Kent State and Western Michigan are off the scale offensively, but have played only 3 games each
MSU is turning the ball over 3.5 times per game.
New Mexico is the only team averaging exactly the same number of runs and passes (36.8)
Georgia State, however, is the most balanced offense by yardage (209.3 pass/207.3 rush)
Miss State is dead last in rushing yards per game...by 45 yards, averaging under 22 yds/gm.
Florida is first in TD passes/gm (4.7), 1.0 ahead of 2nd place.  That's the same difference as between 2nd and 21st.
UCF is averaging 86 plays per game, Boise State, under 50.
Stanford is gaining 4.0 first downs per game on penalties.  Great, right?!  Except that the Cardinal are also averaging that many first downs per game rushing.  Ouch.
.
Defense:
MSU (Spartans) and MSU (Bulldogs) both lead the country in throwing 2 INTs per game....but the Dawgs are doing it with almost 19 more pass attempts per game.
N'Western and IU lead the country, forcing 3 turnovers per game.  Eh, it's probably nothing.
4 teams are allowing under 50% of passes to be completed, 7 are allowing over 70%
Wisconsin and N'Western lead the P5 in points allowed per game.  Anyone take the over??
Kansas is allowing 48.4 pts/gm - more than a TD worse than the next P5 team (Ole Miss).
Marshall leads the country in rushing yards allowed per game AND per carry.
Wisconsin leads in per game among P5 teams, Pitt in per carry.
LSU is dead last among P5 teams in yards passing allowed per game.
Wisconsin faces the fewest rushing attempts per game, so their opponents aren't stupid.
Maryland allows the most first downs per game in the country.  Ole Miss leads for teams that have played over 3 games.
Southern Cal faces over 7 plays fewer than anyone else in the country so far.
Minnesota is dead last among P5 teams, allowing 7.7 yds per play.  LSU is next-worst.

Individuals:
Offense:
Ole Miss' Elijah Moore leads the country with 74 catches and 1,054 yds (in 7 gms)
The leading rusher thus far is Iowa State's Breece Hall, with 1,169 yds
OSU's Justin Fields leads with a 79.6 completion %
Alabama's Najee Harris leads with 16 rushing TDs
Florida's Kyle Trask leads with 31 passing TDs
UCF's Dillon Gabriel leads in attempts and yards (3,017)
Pitt's Alex Kessman is already 18 for 24 on field goals
Duke's Chase Brice has thrown 12 INT (and only 7 TD)
.
Defense:
Arkansas' Grant Morgan leads the country in tackles (104), 17 more than anyone else
The Razorbacks have 3 players in the top 10 nationally in tackles
Duke has 2 players tied for 2nd in the country in sacks (7.5 each)
Pitt has 2 different players that lead the P5 in TFL and sacks

Agreed...BUT they're not the dumpster fire they had been the past 2 years.

So I'm creating 1990 Virginia, and have learned Clemson had been 29-0 vs the Cavaliers up until 1990.  UVA then beat Clemson in '90 and they tied in '91.

0-29 and then you win then tie.  That's crazy.

Virginia is one of the oddities of college football, along with Illinois.  Both should be better, on average, over time.  But I think Virginia's utter lack of a peak is the most curious.
