took a customer to this new place in Sewer Falls Monday evening.........

https://www.ironwoodsf.com/menus/

nice place, loved sitting at the bar with the MNF game and the grill right in front of us, since we didn't have a reservation

Great food and steaks - had the ribeye since they were out of most everything else

a bit too pricey for me - even on the boss's tab - $300 with tip for 2 - no salads, no appetizers - I really wanted to try the grilled oysters but glad we didn't after seeing the tab

sides were asparagus + lobster mac & cheese

Leprino Foods, founded in Denver in 1958, supplies over 85% of U.S. pizza cheese.

They pioneered flash-freezing, rapid aging, and patented melt technology, giving Domino’s, Papa John’s, and Pizza Hut their signature look and taste.

This would of course include "Mexican" in quotes, Mexican-ish, maybe even Taco Bell.  Fortunately I like the "Mexican" we have here.  Florida surprises me a bit.

Our new favorite place has weekend brunch featuring some tasty stuff, whether Mexicanish or not I don't care.  They feature outdoor dining and "garage doors" that roll up around the bar when weather allows and $9 Margs.  I'd dine there more often but we have really good Indian and Italian and Persian and Turkish and Thai and Chinese options, but no French.  :96:

Menu - Emilio's Tacos and Tequila

This is why American dining is so good I think, variety.

Menu looks very good.  Pretty pricey, one of those "upscale Mexican" places, but there's a place for those.

If a place is pricey as a Mexican joint, they shouldn't be charging for freakin' chips and salsa.

And I'm sorry, I find it difficult to respect a place that has something called "Queso Gringo" on their menu.

Not to mention, their "Cali Queso" is something I've never seen on menu at a Mexican place in California. Who puts guac in cheese?!?!

Around here, it's ONLY the pricey Mexican joints that charge for chips and salsa.  They're always free at the cheap ones.

I find it tasty, it's in the middle of a city so it's not cheap(ish) like some places up Buford Highway with lower rent buildings.

Some of those are also quite good.  We usually go here if we're out and about:

A fair bit of the expense of a place is rent, if you can get a dive somewhere with low rent it cuts a chunk off your cost obv.

The place I partly "owned" tried to set a max of 35% of the menu price was their cost of food.  The chef was constantly pushing that up and the GM was trying to lower it.  The idea was to break even on food and make bank on liquor.  Their problem was they "owned" a building larger than their clientel needed, a lot of empty seats on weekdays.

Markups on wine in the US are pretty obscene.  A wine that retails for say $30 will cost a restaurant $20, and they will usually price it around 2x plus on the menu, so probably $70 on the menu.  I see it a LOT higher than that at places, especially Champagne and especially if the place caters to upscale African Americans.  Maybe they are less tuned into wine prices, don't know, but a place gets popular here and the wine list goes crazy.  One of the local Persian places has "caught on" with AAs and their wine prices are not appealing, but they get packed into being almost a bar scene at night.

They also have a hookah bar upstairs, something not my style.

Yeah, it's like hotels. Want to get nickle-and-dimed for every little thing and pay $35 for breakfast? Stay at an expensive hotel targeted at vacationers. Want to get basically all the amenities thrown at you free and a free breakfast? Stay at a Hampton Inn or somewhere else that's relatively cheap and targeted at business travelers.

But c'mon... Not sure you can get away with that here in CA. Even this joint, which is about as ritzy as it gets for Mexican food (and apparently is a notorious cougar den lol), doesn't charge you for chips & salsa... https://www.javiersfinestfoods.com/newport-beach
